First!
I also went through MSQ as Reaper, I agree largely, the cool animations kinda tided me over in the earlier levels, but 86+ it really comes into its own. For me though the really big thing that sets Reaper apart from the other jobs is that you almost never use your boring 1-2-3 combo. There are so many higher priority buttons to use before those, it really keeps the playstyle feeling fresh. Like you say, this only really happens at 88+ when you get Plentiful Harvest, but being able to basically do two full burst rotations on pull without even once using your 1-2-3 combo is pretty sick. One other thing I love about Reaper in dungeons is that its AoE is a wide semicircle shape instead of a cone, and it's really easy to see exactly where you're hitting.
It's good to know it gets better. I kinda got bored of it early on because it felt like babies first Dragoon.
This aligns with my experience of it as well, it felt slow and clunky and i didn't really enjoy it until mid-high 80's, but once you have the full kit at 90 with your shroud finisher it actually feels really good.
As a healer I've never once seen a reaper use arcane crest properly… sad times 🙁
It was fairly boring yeah til 90. Still kinda boring at 90 though. Glad I leveled it, but after a few expert roulettes and raids, meh, haven't touched it since. Just not a lot to it. Just feels underwhelming (playstyle not dps.)
i havent played reaper myself as i am the other melee dps in the raid, but from my standpoint of view reaper looks really good, clean roation nearly no button bloat compared to other classes like sam, and really good dps output as it seems reaper is the strongeest dps atm.
Pretty much agree with every feeling you had. It is painfully boring until lvl80 but thankfully gets better and better all the way till 90. My least favorite thing about the job though is keeping that stupid dmg buff up on enemies…. It’s nice getting gauge when stuff dies but it is so tedious and annoying to keep track of.
Glad to hear it gets a lot better. I've been doing solely fate leveling on my reaper so it's only level 82 atm. As much as I love the animations for the abilities, it gets a bit old after a while when I don't have enough to do. Thankfully, it sounds like it won't stay that way, so I'm looking forward to getting to max level.
very underrated channel, love your enthusiasm about everything
I leveled SAM through msq first and once I tried RPR, I shelved the SAM right away and it's not even close. The reaper form is both satisfying and flashy. I feel most people not liking it are elitists min-maxer who dont feel accomplished unless their bar is bloated with a billion oGCDs. RPR base rotation is certainly meh but at 90 you're almost never doing it. Also a melee with a blink ? Sign me up pls.
RPR has also a lot of bad rep as it is the new kid on the block and a lot of people are trying it meaning you are more likely than not gonna run into a poorly played one.
The lore held me over until 80 (but I mean, it wasn't THAT bad), then it somewhat started to pick up, and now at endgame raiding and EX Trials at 90, man it just feels sooooo good. Being able to do like 3 shrouds before things start to slow down, and even then it's almost no time before it picks up again. I was skeptical about the lack of oGCD's but playing it, it just feels more streamlined. No weaving twenty abilities into your rotation and diluting the core of the job. On the other hand the rotation itself is so unique in that the 1-2-3 combo is just filler. Overall it has such a unique flow that might not be crazy fast, takes enough twists and turns to keep it interesting throughout an encounter.
Plus that 500 potency heal shield is nice.
I leveled it after i finished MSQ on my RDM and i enjoy it alot, though between 70 and 80 its not that fun, its only at 80 when u unluck your soul gauge that the class comes into its own.
Soulsow/Harvest Moon seems intended as a opener, since u get it instantly out of combat so only use it then.
All in all, i think the abilities look and work great, only thing i have issue with are AoE gauge attacks, since they attack in a cone and if u just happen to attack a enemy who is not faced towards the other enemies your attacks won't hit them wich mean u still need to keep an eye on that.
Compared to Dragoon(my other melee dps job) Reaper is more focused on AoE and getting your combos right but has options to get your gauges full in a instant should u fail, and i think that endears it to alot of ppl.
That and the teleporting around 😉
