  1. Really enjoyed this video, I thought it was interesting. I will say some of the things you suggest I think would make the game worse and I feel like there’s a lot of holes I could poke into whether you want things expanded because they should be expanded or because they CAN be expanded.

For example: I don’t think doing more with Grand Companies would make the game better. Grand companies are, quite frankly, boring as a concept. The only interesting thing about them in terms of story is their leaders, and even then they’re not super fascinating outside the context of the MSQ. Most of the role play and group enjoyment comes from FCs. Any content made for GCs would have to be split into thirds, because realistically most people will only play one GC.

You’d end up in a situation where you’re reducing player’s access to content with a system most people aren’t passionate about in the first place. I feel like ignoring GC content is a lesson they learned from WoW and I heavily approve of it. It’s quantity, not quality.

Is it a terrible idea to expand on it? Not really. But I don’t think it’d be a good use of their time. Especially because the MSQ keeps taking us out of Eorzea.

More dungeons at the cost of more alternate content in patches just doesn’t appeal to me either. I think there’s a balance between ‘hey where’s the content?’ and just asking too much of developers. On the other hand, they’re making enough money that maybe they should be doing more, but it may be quality vs quantity as well.

Dungeons in general are kind of boring. Even people who love PVE don’t really get excited about doing dungeons because they aren’t really that hard. They’re pretty, but not really fulfilling in the way other content might be. I think FFXIV is so successful because they realize that dungeons are not actually as fun as people think they are, and are adding more of the content people actually can get excited about to the game instead.

  2. I am level 20 in FFXIV, and have no idea what you are talking about. WTH is "Brian"? Secondly what is, "FFXIV is dying" ? You have not shown a one, single metric, subs, new game sales, dungeon and raid stats, nothing whatsoever. Thirdly, a recent video from Asmon on stats and metrics on internet searches on various games since 2004, shows how games rise and fall all the time, over the years, it does not mean they are "dying". Games do not exist in isolation, there are dozens of other games that come and go over time. So again, what metric are we using? The rest of the video could easily be talking in generalities and in terms that affect and apply to all other games, just change the title to "why WoW is dying" and it's the same.

  3. One thing that I often see is people who are unwilling to try new things in the game but then complain about things being “the same.” There’s nothing wrong with knowing what you like and engaging in that content as your main source of enjoyment as this was pretty much me in every expansion until Shadowbringers and I would often take long breaks from the game. However, Shadowbringers made a lot of fundamental changes to the game that made it far more enjoyable for me to play other roles in the game. I seriously played tank for the first time in Shadowbringers after finding it utterly unappealing in previous expansions despite trying every single tank. I had dabbled with Samurai in Stormblood but I took a serious look at the melee jobs in Shadowbringers and eventually maxed out every job in the game…on multiple alts! I joined multiple FCs, got into crafting for the first time, and made it a point to at least try all the content in the game that I had access to and for the first time EVER I’ve stayed subbed to the game for the entire expansion. For me, there was a direct line between the devs making the game play more enjoyable for me while providing a story that absolutely killed me not only in the MSQ but also the trial and normal raid series which then enticed me to want to check out even MORE content in the game. All this is to say that while I never thought the game was dying I am still SHOCKED by how much the game improved with this expansion which is fantastic not only for veteran players but for the absolute deluge of new players who never had to deal with running out of TP on physical classes, having to level up multiple jobs for their cross-class skills back when leveling was an absolute pain with DPS queues for instances easily being 40 minutes to an hour, or the absolute grind that was old ARR before they removed 100 quests and gave it so much XP that you can level two jobs with it easily along with daily roulettes and XP earrings.

  4. Some of these comments lol. Oof. Sorry Chris, looks like people saw the title and immediately started typing without seeing your explanation, literally at the start of the video.

I remember how controversial this video was for the Work to Game channel. It did not get a good reception lol. I went back to that video and see my comment lol! I've been following you guys for some years now :)) I cringe a bit at my comment, but I think my comment is fair still. I think Brian was burned out back then. I don't remember how far Eureka came out or how far into Blue Mage, I'm pretty sure Brian didn't raid back then and was really just level grinding and doing dailies. The Stormblood story doesn't really pay off until Shadowbringers too.

All that being said Brian did have valid critiques back then still. Some of the stuff was fair. I think that was when the SE team was announcing cuts to the content release schedule and it felt like the pace was slowing down without any return or making promises. I think the video came out before we got Ultimate? Maybe UCOB was out but not UWU yet. To your point, "I don't see pros yet and am only seeing cons", that summarizes the video and the sentiments of that time. I remember seeing them all over Reddit then too. This was an interesting retrospective!

  5. The main reason I don’t play much anymore is because I enjoy xbox more and only join PlayStation to play ffxiv in 2015, endwalker will be my last expansion before I quit the game and go full Xbox and before anyone says yes I know I can just go and get a pc I just prefer consoles

  6. little unpopular opinion but I think stormblood was great, it was more down to earth type of story, raids and dungeons are still on of my favorites. but then again we got Eureka which is okey at best. personally I think Ala mhigo should have been its separate expansion with surrounding areas in war and stormblood, as a expansion after that, would have been continuation of that then I think there would have been more apprecation of the entire stormblood story 😀 thoughts?
