  1. Numbers are raising and sinking all the time with the releases of expansions and other influences. Both FFXIV and WoW have extremely stable player numbers. So everyone wins.

But if you really have to compare them, the numbers right now are something like this:

In terms of total accounts/sales/subscriptions WoW obviously wins hands down. It's been on the market almost twice as long, revolutionized the genre and lived though a hype where everyone and their grandma knew what an MMORPG is. No other MMO can ever catch up to that early 2000s phenomenon:
    WoW: 114.73 M
    FFXIV: 25.30 M
Both are impressive numbers! FFXIV will never get to 100M, but it's still impressive considering that these are different times.

In terms of daily player numbers, which is what everyone is more interested in, WoW STILL outmatches FFXIV:
WoW: 4.36M are logging in daily right now
    FFXIV: 2.40M
are logging in daily right now
Again, both games show impressive numbers. But a new expansion for WoW pretty much just released and FFXIV is still waiting for Endwalker coming this fall. So these numbers will look very different by then.

At the end of the day, I think that FFXIV has a way more healthy attitude in terms of time-investment. And considering this I find it incredible how well they compare to each other.

  2. Final Fantasy XIV does beat wow if you compare "world of warcraft" and "ffxiv" in google trends. Almost no one searches for the actual game title.

  3. I've been slowly transitioning towards FFXIV, It's a game with a ton of content that doesn't "demand" me to do the content
i feel free to make goals and make my own fun rather than be at the mercy WoW's terrible reward system

  4. So much disdain for Asmon and WoW players in this comment section. Come on bros we're in this MMO ship together, a ton of people play both games or migrated from one to the other… Pointless to resort to reductive tribalism (that applies to memers in the chat shorthandedly calling XIV players WEEBS too lol)

  5. I too hope 14 overtakes wow but I can't in good faith say it will because again, wow has more localization and acessibility than 14. Though I think 14 will rise to be a very close second.

  6. If there is one big thing to take from that graph, its WoW jumps by a massive percentage every expansion then tanks as 80-90% of that population leaves. By comparison FFXIV only doubles before the 80-90% drop.

Assuming these graphs somewhat reflect approximate sub numbers, one possible takeaway is that the base population in FFXIV (people subbed most/all the time) is much higher compared to the people who only jump in for new content than in WoW. That is also shown by the smaller spikes (the content patches) after each expansion being much smaller relative to the main launch spike.

Basically, in FFXIV every other person you see will still be around a few weeks later. In WoW its every 5-6th person.

  7. Wow popularity is run off its brand and not its content. Ff14 flies on only the content and trying to compete with a super brand and a toxic fanbase is seriously massive undertaking especially with ff14s budget. Where wow is slow and shitty and over funded ff14 has no brand,, no money and no real power behind it it's amazing ff14 is doing as well as i

  8. Isn't that literally just search trends? I play FFXIV since ARR closed beta and barely EVER search for it. Why should I, I already play it and have all my resources in place, and so do must longtime players I know. I don't need to google infos on the game, the Lodestone gives me all the info I need by pointing at when the next liveletter is and so on. It's just searches. WoW is a lot better known since it's been around for so long, even people who won't start playing it might google just to see what it is and what the hype is about, it says nothing about actual popularity. And it says even less about game quality…

  9. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say something isn't fair to world of warcraft lol. I'm a long time on / off player of wow, since 2007 and even though Shadowlands has a lot of players they have lost a lot of players to not only classic wow ( especially with TBC soon ) there have been a few long time wow streamers leave to FFXIV. Asmon himself doesn't even play retail wow full time.
But regardless of how people view him or his followers , people take notice when he post videos about a game OR another content creator ( usually peoples sub numbers go up when that happens)

  10. Asmonbald is a bad, soulless, beady eyed person that has a problem with gaslighting and hypocrisy. He doesn't even play the game he implies is better than others, he just AFKs and watches other's content while getting boosted through dungeons, he can't even hit top 10 in dps charts while being given the best gear.

  11. FFXIV is becoming more popular Asmongold reacting to FFXIV stuff has contributed to that as well as a lot of WoW vets who have quit WoW and have been like "Wow why didn't I play FFXIV before"

I can't think of others but Chris from Work2Game and Bellular, know what they're talking about, so I'll listen to them.

  12. I understand the desire to defend WoW, but I doubt your 'findings'. I mean you manipulate the data, show your representation but then claim you can't claim its reality. WoW is hemorrhaging players, we also know that there's been a counting disparity in the past as WoW has often referred to its total subs rather than active gamers. Combine that with the unfair arrival of lockdowns, WoW's known toxicity, the less than grand arrival of shadowlands where as ShadowBringers has been one of FF14's more popular expansions and it isn't hard to see WoW being crushed. You just have to face the reality. Good things can't last forever. Eventually you have to let go.
