Path Of The Goddess, Concord, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail – The MinnMax Show

On this week’s episode, Ben Hanson, Kelsey Lewin, Jacob Geller, and Haley MacLean kick things off by unpacking their thoughts on Capcom’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and PlayStation’s beta for Concord. Then Sarah Podzorski joins the crew to talk about the new expansion to her beloved Final Fantasy XIV and how Dawntrail stacks up to climactic content like Endwalker. Then we answer questions submitted on Patreon by the community and award the iam8bit question of the week! 1. I think the reason why Sony didn't make anymore first person shooters is because they would have to make it 30fps. No one is trying to play a FPS at 30fps. Especially when Call of Duty is running at 60fps. But hopefully we see more now.

  2. Dawntrail hurt my soul. It felt like a Disney Jr show with how it wrapped up conflicts with the power of understanding. Wuk Lamat was not an interesting character, and she's shoved down your throat for 50 hours.

  3. Ben, despite being friendly and nice, you're one of the most cynical media personalities out there when it comes to AAA games. How you feel taken aback by the Concord hate is how I feel taken aback by at least 1 of your takes every week on this show. Come on man.

  4. I agree with Jacob on the Concord discourse. It's hard to care about characters that are designed in a lab to appeal that largest demographics possible when we have so many options to choose from.

  5. VR cardio games have improved our gaming skills, reaction times and aim are signifincantly improved after playing Synth Riders and Beat Sabre on the highest difficulties for months.

Was NOT expecting that but will gladly take it lol

  6. This episode has been a mood, we've had so many things happen similar to the crew today.

Resident Evil got us into Beethoven because of the moonlight sonata and we had the same moment of impressing someone only to then reveal "Yeah you play it for a puzzle with the wood crest in RE1" and see the sheer look of disgust lol

  7. I'm fine with diversity, I like the characters in Overwatch in Apex Legends, though I think the style of Valorant is boring. The diversity complaint are just a (hopefully) small but loud group of assholes. I mostly think this because fighting games have had this level of diversity for 30+ years, and I don't see that "argument" aimed there in general.

I think Concord has the same cast problem that Battleborn did, with a pretty much 50/50 split of cool and bad designs. I do have to disagree with Kelsey that all designs for hero shooters are about the same quality, Overwatch is miles ahead of everything else in that regard.

As for the game, it just feels cynical overall. We know Sony has had this live-service initiative cooking. They swooped in on studio that split from the one they ended up buying. The design is very obviously "GotG at home." The game itself is pretty much just Overwatch/TF2 but with Destiny combat. Nothing seems fresh about the game aside from the presumably unstainable weekly cutscenes.

  8. I went down the K2 rabbit hole a while back when I was looking up deadly mountains. I ended up spending most of my day reading the Wikipedia page on it and watching YouTube videos about some of the deadly incidents that occurred on it. Very crazy mountain. Sounds like Annapurna is next on my list

  9. Lots of cars have multiple horns. They're placed in different sections of the car and produce different notes because chords are better at attracting attention than singular notes. A third, quieter horn would be used for key fob and/or alarm functions.

I don't believe that the NHTSA would approve a vehicle that gives drivers the ability to use multiple horn signatures while driving. Multiple horn signatures means multiple buttons for the driver to press, and the NHTSA has opinions on horn buttons and how they "divert the driver's attention from the driving task.”

Fancy modern cars like the T3sLa Model Whatevers let you plug in a USB drive and upload your own car horns like a goddamn iPhone 3GS in 2009.

  10. Haley, I've been trying to learn about sleep for many years, and there may be some validity to the idea that sleep before midnight is worth more. Your body has multiple daily cycles that regulate sleep (related to daylight, how long you've been awake, and various hormones), and they align naturally around 9-12 and again before dawn. For a healthy person with a normal schedule, you'll get the deepest and best quality sleep during these two phases.

Interestingly, there's a phase in the middle of the night where you'll enter light sleep and possibly wake up. Historically, it was common to sleep in two 4 hour chunks, and spend a couple hours awake in the middle (reading, praying, quality time with your partner). Supposedly, the first chunk was the original meaning of "beauty sleep." We might have evolved to sleep like this before lightbulbs changed our routine, but that's still unclear.

I've tried this pattern myself and it's really satisfying.

  11. the character designs do suck to me. they are very samey and down to earth in a way. colors are very muted colors except 1 or 2. they use mustard instead of yellow. they use olive instead of green. these choices make the design seem realistic but also boring. the overuse of beige and leather brown is exhausting

  12. I've got no dog in the fight as I haven't played a second of the game (and don't plan to), but I found it telling that Kelsey blamed racism/sexism for the hate on Concord followed by the entire crew absolutely laying on a litany of far more justifiable criticisms about it for the next couple of minutes.

  13. I don't like the character designs in concord either i think they look generic like npcs u would walk by in other games. like the plant dude for example they look like someone u would kill in god of war and not think twice about. best of luck to theme tho but me personally i'd rather play fragpunk or marvel rivals.

  14. More Sarah pleeeease, which I acknowledge is not in your control. Actually, more women in general, Ben. The quality is always good, but boy howdy does it increase dramatically when you have more than one woman on the show.

  17. Haley, I think the system in Concord that separates it from the rest is the "crew bonus" system. Every character has a specific role which has their own "crew bonus". Once you switch a character mid game, the next character will have the crew bonus from previous character. And then when you switch again, that next one will have the crew bonus of previous 2. It can stack up to 6 crew bonuses . The game needs to get better at explaining this, but once I figured it out, it's so fun now switching up characters during a match in a strategic way.
