If i had to take a guess, the azem spell doesn't so much pull people as its a form of creation magic, we're probably creating temporary familiars using the visages and therefore assumed abilities of people we've seen or met.
Umm, also… I can't help but wonder if claudien may have been necromantically unsundered, it seems athena implied she'd taken souls around her to restore her vessel, and by extension claudien, to her presundered levels.
