So far it looks like endgame in Final Fantasy XIV just couldn’t reel me in for numerous reasons. So I switched gears to find a new obsession. This is the story of how all that went about.

Tanks are dps by design in 14 (also healers are dps) but your rotation is simpler than a melee dps would be. To feel more tanky in the wow sense of tanky within 14 have you tried the level capped dungeons? These are pulled wall to wall so you have to know your mitigation and your party. Trials and raids might also challenge you more with mitigation and positioning. 14 tanks are brilliant with positioning as they can make or break the party’s dps. So they do more than just absorb damage. But if you have only done MSQ trials and dungeons you will not likely experience much challenge as they are designed so all players can clear with ease.
The reason for so many jobs on one character is not because one is much better than another for a fight in the way it is in wow where you stack boomkins or whatever. Content is designed to be clearable on any job as you have often heard. The reason is for variety, flavor, and play style preference. One expac I might not like how my SMN feels, so I might play my BLM instead for instance. But you can experience them all and as a tank, you know what your party can and cannot do in a situation, because you likely have played all the roles, at least a little.
Materia and BIS do change your rotation and your opener. But that is at higher levels of game play. Or when you wonder why your BLM opener isn't working and go look up your spell speed :).
As for customization and borrowed power, 14 hasn't got all that except in special zones like Bozja. I played wow and raided long enough to be glad to be done with it. I wanted the freedom to join any group in PF or DF and be ok. But ofc ymmv.
And since you are haunting the Diadem, be sure and exchange your scrip for mounts, pets, music and glamour. Some also sell for a lot.
Ive been playing WoW a very long time, as a WARRIOR – I always play warrior, I have NEVER changed my main since Vanilla. With that being said, I love the job swap system. If its not for you, its not for you – it is for me. WoW''s hatred for Melee specs in raid and M+ has worn me out, I cant play fury anymore and be effective, the lack of respect for players time and efforts, and general lack of any semblance of balance destroys my ability to play the way I want. The customization is fine and fun – if you can actually go out and do something with it, but you cant so its pointless.
Not to mention the many many MANY times, your customization and hours of effort, get destroyed by a patch change or update
I'm already at the point that I know endgame is going to be really different than WoW. I think you'd maybe find it fun to level a different tank job to give something different a try. I wonder how much comparing the paladin in this game vs the WoW paladin. I've already been working on a second job so I'm not so over leveled on the content from my first job that I picked. I was an archer/bard to start and I've been doing rogue to get ninja now. I think that's part of the fun too.
Your comments on the wow classes designers, I think that's becoming my biggest gripe with WoW. I'd rather them have simpler classes and create more content. Most of my gripes from WoW are not really an issue in FF14 and from the look of it, Ashes of Creation is looking to go a similar way
I think you should play as a DPS, just to see how much of a difference it is between the tankiness of a tank
you can just unsub for a year and come back and play the jrpg solo part of the game it stands on its own as a jrpg. doesnt really have to be consumed as an mmo
i feel ya brother. I feel that some things FF14 does better.. and some things wow does better. I love how FF14 you only need 1 character but at the same time .. that one character just isnt as fun to play than most classes in wow. Im not a fan of their sequential rotation, i prefer the priority style rotations instead so while its great other people like it.. i just like the combat in wow better. I also wholeheartedly agree with you on the personal customization of your character as far as talents and whatnot that changes , even if slightly, the feeling of how it plays vs how someone elses plays. it not saying one is better than the other.. its subjective.. and for me.. i like wow better.
Now i do own every collectors editions xpacs for FF14 and i do like the game. This is not a choose one or the other for me. This is literally i play wow more but i do still play FF14 some. and to those people who insist , even passively, that its one or the other… thats for them.. not me.
Soul why FF14? I’am not judging I like seeing people that play WoW trying new things hopefully we see more of it, FF14 deserves it they care about their community so much compared to Blizzard who don’t give a rats ass about any of the community. WoW don’t deserve anyone to pay and play their game anymore. I am done with WoW until some philosophy and design changes.
The fact that all x classes play the same is one of the things that put me off too. Not alone in that wanting class customization.
Howly mowly!
i cant even think to left ardenweald for this disgusting zone you are in. this ff game looks unfinished in artworks, its weird.
You are completely right there is no customization between jobs. The way 14 works is you are are suppose to do different jobs. Each job is basically your "spec" when compared to WOW. Sword+shield = Paladin just like Sword+shield = Prot paladin in WOW. If you want to go Ret paladin, then you play Dark knight. I think it is largely the same overall.
Yes all Dark knight will play mostly the same but I think the biggest difference is that each job are polished and play very differently and are tailored to specific play style. It is really about exploring freely and trying new jobs. I am surprise you did not explore crafting while leveling, the crafting in this game makes WOW crafting a joke.
Imo ff14 has many advantages over WoW to the point i have trouble finding something that I can say WoW is better at without major concerns, for example I can say WoW has customization which is great but its heavily countered by the fact that metaslaves ruin the game for everyone else, though non metaslaves are very few in this game sadly simply based on covenant statistics.
But I found one major thing that FF14 is lacking big time, dps jobs unlike WoW take weeks to master because they are more involved and honestly beautifully designed, they have as many buttons are WoW dps classes+pot/utility buttons but instead they are all focused on dps.
And there lies the issue, dps just dps and nothing more, I am able to enjoy m+ because and solo content like torghast because of dps utility like slow, cc, misdirect, roots, stealth, invis etc allow you to do things in many different ways instead of hurr durr dps and nothing more, and that also means FF14 can never really have m+ even though some ask for it because what are you gonna do better? spam aoe slightly faster or from a better angle? Not much you can do which is sad but I can understand it was their choice to focus on deep and interesting rotations that take a long time to master compared to wow's easy to master dps rotations so the rest of your buttons are about utility etc
I could never get into FF14. I just don't like the way the game looks and feels. Still having fun with my guild in WoW and people hate me for it xD
I really don't feel as though using Diadem gameplay footage for endgame discussion video does justice.
Crafting, housing, and glamour is the true end game
You're one WoW YouTuber thats why it always will be seen as WoW VS FFXIV but Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida doesn't appreciate people dunking on World of Warcraft, saying that his game "wouldn't exist" without Blizzard's MMO and that comparing the two is "the wrong conversation to have." It two different mmo games that you can play at the same time if you want pay two sub feeds but and have fun with both or play them on/off. Both will co exist for years to come and maybe one day WoW will be nr1 again or not it really depend on both dev teams of this games and their ability to keep players paying… Well playing… 😁
What you describe is not uncommon. When I bought my first house I got obsessed and did nothing for a month but decorate, craft housing items, sell housing items, and get to know the huge community that exists around this one feature of the game. WoL can't always be saving Eorzea.
interesting perspective indeed , thx for sharing
FF14 is good but it lacks in a lot of areas I play the beginning of expansion and then unsub til the end. The endgame raids are gate kept so it’s basically not a feature for me
Interesting take. For sure the job design of FF14 lacks the crazyness of classes in WOW, where you can go very wild with trinkets and procs. At the same time, WOW can be pretty unbalanced and lets not pretend 90% of the playerbase aren't metaslaves; bad for you if your not one of them.
Identity is pretty much centered in your character in FF14, the more versatile he is and good at what he can do (healing, tanking, dps, crafting, gathering) the "better"; wow pretty much center around your class power / 3specs which is fine, but you have to reroll to experience more of the game and its a pain in the ass in wow right now.
As for the paladin in FF14, he's an awesome tank with support abilites, he's the only one who can heal and its pretty big and im not telling the whole story its better for you as a gamer to discovers its true potential. You must try hard content to get the most of jobs in FF14.
Anyway, even if you're not interested in PVE you can still enjoy FF14 for the variety of its craft/gather system, which is waayyyyyy above wow's, its not even close.
Have fun 🙂
I really appreciate your honesty. It just demonstrates even more that what each person enjoys in a game is indeed a very personal thing. There are things I enjoy in WoW, but I am also finding I am really engaged in the crafting and gathering jobs in FFXIV. I am also a big "story" person so the MSQ is really pulling me into it all. Right now, playing both games, I am a very happy gamer.
Of course it is absolutely fine that you want to play the game a certain way, but I struggle to sympathise with your issue personally. As someone who has mained a whole bunch of different classes in wow I LOVE the Job system in ff14.
I understand that you identify as a paladin first and foremost, but if the job by the same name in FF14 isn't fun to you, then why play it? It's not the same class as the paladin in wow, it just has the same name and similar themes, but it's never going to be identical, and you wouldn't want it to be.
Like you said, i think it's a "funk". Once you get over the idea that you are a Paladin and warm up to the idea that you are Soul (the character) I think the Job system will make more sense.
Again, it's fine for you to play the game however you like. I just think this is maybe the reason you have gone off the combat portion of the game.
Thank you for sharing your honest opinion on it though and not just jumping in the bandwagon.
Onmi-gatherers and omni-crafters are very much a thing in XIV and there are many players who only go through the msq to unlock the areas to gather in or craft the best items, they also can have some of the most money in the game due to consumables, gear, and housing items. I hope you enjoy the game in whatever way you find fun
This is a great breakdown of FF14 vs WoW games. The part about the classes/specs/powers having much more variance in WoW compared to the more homogenized FF14 classes really resonated with me. People complain all the time about how WoW is "unbalanced" class wise, but having the class variance could actually be considered a strength compared to FF14.
I was really excited for your video series on XIV however it baffles me why you would engage it in the manner you have. Why boost when the majority of your viewers would be doing the content as a free trial? Why not traverse the same water as they? It's folly, and really diminishes any credibility you could have to weigh into the subject correctly. As such while I enjoyed your videos on WOW, I can't help but feel these XIV videos are nothing more than a means to stem the growing sentiment that XIV is a superior product.
Listening to your complaints about PLD really echo why I have the most trouble enjoying any tank job in FFXIV outside of Savage/Ultimate content. They are just blue dps, and because half their buttons are mitigation focused, they have vastly slower and simpler dps rotations (except gnb… kinda). I would highly recommend giving a dps a try, specifically a melee or caster, if you want to bring back complexity and interest in your gameplay. Also this is a sentiment common amongst most high end players, so hopefully the devs will give us some love here in Endwalker!
It can be hard for some to get used to not having to deal with the latest throw away power mechanic or the illusion of choice in terms of talents when most people choose along the optimal lines. Different jobs are your real customization and your identity is your glam, which can set you apart in a more visible way. It cuts away lot of BS, leaving you to just play the game. 🙂 I hope you find your groove and I think you might enjoy trying out other jobs, they all have differing feels.
I’m surprised that the Susano trial wasn’t something that stuck out for you! It seems like the ultimate badass fight for any tank 🙂
