They mention in the cutscene. Allagan was a powerful nation that fell long ago. All powers are looking for relics of this nation because of how advanced they were. This is why Cid is wondering where they dug up that device.
Lore notes: Cid's father was Midas Nan Garlond, who was heavily involved in Project Meteor (which was a key event that led to the Calamity) and the Bozja Incident. These and several other major factors led to Cid defecting to Eorzea around 10-15 years before A Realm Reborn. Cid, of course also held the rank of "Nan", which is given to high-ranking magitek engineers and specialists.

God, ultima used to be a fucking boss…. Then you realize it's been mass produced in random bits of the game.
Edit: the grandfather he mentioned is louisoix leveilleur – the old man on the trailer of a realm reborn. Also, if you can get a few people (between light party and full party) to join up and help you get through the binding coil of bahamut, i think you'd like the story in that since it's story related and you find out what alisaie (alphinaud's twin sister) has been up to

As a little funny heads-up for you, there is an encounter in this game that has you fight all of them, and its one of the hardest in this game

Dude that cutscene, having that music cut in, i just started FFXIV a few days ago and that cutscene took me from "I'm REALLY enjoying this game" to "oh my god i LOVE this game"
Pretty sure the music made me fucking transcend
Imagine, travelling to all three corners of the realm (such as they were at the time) only to find the McGuffin you seek in the back yard of where you started. xD
