To get an idea of the competition HW went up against , Blizzard released Tanaan Jungle and Hellfire citadel the day before HW was released (6.2)

Dragoon wasnt a new job when heavensward came out. It was just the job highlight of the expansion ff14 loves doing that they try to highlight jobs that are related to the story. The new jobs in heavesward are astrologian and dark knight. Also ninja was I think added during patch cycles of 2.0.
So when Heavensward came out, they introduced flying to the game. The flying aircrafts were very much so an exciting thing to see in the trailer at the time. I recall not only the heartache from ARR, but also the anticipation of what would happen in Heavensward. Then seeing the trailer and seeing flying I actually screamed out excitedly! ๐ I cannot say I have yet to watch a trailer for FFXIV that did not get me excited. Edit: The Dragoon was always a part of ARR, but each expansion highlights specific classes. Heavensward was the highlight of the Dragoon.
There's no way I could take a break going from ARR to HW, lmao.
Another fun little bit of each trailer: They always attempt to show the artifact set of the Main Character's signature job of the expansion. That Dragoon armor set is the Level 60 one, just as how the Warrior armor set was the Level 50 one! Just a little bit more excitement for the folks that want to see the new expansion's armor!
For a lot of Dragoon fans and just people curious about the canon of our abilities and fighting; this was a huge trailer. We all know it's a video game and some stuff is exaggerated for our enjoyment. Shooting 30 fireballs when magic should be rare, jumping apparently 100s of meters in a few seconds, weapons shining with energy and light as we strike etc etc. It wouldn't have surprised folks if that was just video games being video games and the actual story had its own canon or order to fighting. The only time we saw a "move" was in the opening trailer with the Warrior using "Steel Cyclone" but never anything else to that extreme. But towards the end of ARR we see more small moments of that kind of power or ability here and there.
Then in the trailer we see dragoons just launching themselves like missiles at dragons! "Woh, what was that!? Are those dragoons? That's a dragoon! Do we really do that?!" Just seeing them fly like that was crazy! Before we probably though it was more falling or just landing on dragons and then spearing them. But for YoshiP and team to go, no it's more like missiles or an arrow hitting it's target. Blew folks away. Then, like it just wanted to confirm it wasn't just a one off thing for flare. The HW trailer just throws it all at us saying "Yep, you guys are beast." 4 Dragoons rodeoing a dragon. Then all those other dragoons just soaring in the air and driving their spears and body down like missiles. Then dragoons leaping up to strike down more dragons. The trailer really drove it all home.
I remember seeing this trailer when I was really new to the game and I mistook Nanamo for Minfilia, so throughout Heavensward I kept thinking "wait, are they going to bring Minfilia back? Just to have her be poisoned?" I was very confused. Obviously now that I've played the game more I see how ridiculous that mistake was lol
The WoL in the trailers changes jobs for every expansion.
Dragoon was actually a base job in ARR. It's my main with my Dark Knight and Paladin's being kept just behind it.
Can you do arr trailer reaction too? I would love to see it even though you've finished. Stll great to watch it and I even watch it from time to time.
Edit: i hear dragoon story line is kind of like a prequel to HW? Not sure on the accuracy since I haven't done dragoon yet. Plan to for my alt though since I'm almost to HW.
Every expansion has a "title" job. The Warrior of Light (You/Us) will showcase that
Dragoon is an ARR job, but the Heavensward story deals a lot with dragons and thus, dragoons who are their slayers. All of the dragoons in the trailer are wearing the lvl 50 relic dragoon gear, while the warrior of light wears the lvl 60 set. New things introduced in the expansion are Ishgard, flying, machinist and astrologian jobs and the au'ra race. This is why Yugiri wore a cloak for most of her introduction but you could see the hint of her horns, which was very exciting back in the day.
Notice that for a lot of the newer players with their reaction videos it's just the Heavensward trailer and never the Story Trailer, perhaps they want to avoid potential spoilers which is a valid reason but man Dragonsong is such a beautiful ballad and deserves to be heard and watched within a similar vein.

A fun thing to know is that the music changes for every expansion for combat and quest turn in/pickup to reflect the expansion's theme ๐

I've noticed the end of ARR hit you pretty hard (you're not alone). There are definitely certain people that need to pay… and I admit even after knowing how it all went down I left Ul'dah's Grand Company and never looked back. But I will say this much: don't blame all of Eorzea for the actions of a corrupt few (or even a corrupt many). You still saved the people you saved, and whether they're grateful or not or even know of it… you still did that. Potato-chan is still a big damn hero. And her journey continues. And we're all here for it.

Looking at it, there's more "trailers" for the next expansions with the benchmarks, that act like a preview.
I cannot wait for the new videos. From HW and on, there is so much great stuff.
I started in May 2015, after seeing this trailer. All the dragoon love when Kain of FF4 was a favorite character of mine. I eventually got my fiance to play years later, start to finish, during 4.4 leading up to the launch of Shadowbringers. It was such a trip getting to experience all the hype going into a new expansion and playing side by side during the Shadowbringers launch. It's such fun to see new players enjoying the game for the first time as it brings back all those feelings. XIV truly deserves its main numbered title in the series. Best FF has been in decades.

No new jobs are reveals in Heavensward's opening trailer. But it does tell the story of the hero's 2nd job change to help Ishgard fight dragons. (Archer> Warrior > Dragoon)
While Lancers is one of the original 1.0 jobs, the Dragoons were added around 1.1.
A Realm Reborn Introduced the Arcanist, which can become the Summoner and Scholar. The Ninja was introduced in the middle of A Realm Reborn.
Heavensward introduced the Dark Knight, Astrologian and Machinists.
Stormblood introduced the Samurai and Red Mage.
Shadowbringers introduced the Gunbreaker and Dancer.
