My Issues with FFXIV's Content

“FFXIV YouTubers fu… suck” That’s what has been discussed the last week. And yes, we may suck indeed. But in this video, I am talking about some problems, that could be the cause as well (Apart from us, still sucking xD)

What do you guys think about this? Shall Final Fantasy take the same road like always, or do you want to see some changes in the future expansion?

Give me some comments or join me on monday for discussing live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/desperius_ffxiv

  1. I dont envy squinix here, they conditioned the players that the game will work in some way amd trying to change that even if squinix too would wamt it would be very tough.

I certainly can see ppl going from being accepted in endgame content regardless of class to getting the door in their face.

  2. The problem with shadowlands is as good as it is it’s still not good. It’s just okay. Sure they took away gear rng it they took away the amount of gear you can get. Sure 14 gearing is boring but I always know I’ll get something. I’ve been clearing castle heroic every week and I’ve gotten like 4 drops total from the raid and weekly loot from the box ( most of the time never anything I needed.)

  3. As a relatively newish player (~4 months) I enjoy your videos but I hate that you often have visual spoilers, especially cutscenes.
I mainly play for the story and take my sweet time as the story is the most important thing in FFXIV too so its meh to get spoilered on those.
I know that it is unreasonable to expect no footage of latest expansion/content but I would greatly appreciate if in general videos like this (same in the opener explanation videos) there would be no cutscene/visual spoilers for newest expansion or some small warnings in the corner or something, so that I can decide if I continue to view at the video or just look at the corner and listen till the spoiler is gone.
I know I could just not watch till I am down with the story but meh, I want to watch your content!

Anyway, thanks for your videos, I enjoy them and they teach me more about the game!

To say something related to the video: As a newbie, I love that every job plays the same in FFXIV, the variety comes from the fact that I can switch my job on a whim. WoW, GW2 etc, I cannot, so the variety must be in the class, in FF, its in the change. If every job had multiple styles to play I would be way overwhelmed, even now I cannot remember and play each job equally well (nor should I) but the "only one way to play a job" is imho an important part of the formula, to repeat myself, the variety comes from changing jobs based on encounter, mood etc.
If I had played the game for some years, well, I can relate how that could change my perspective.

  5. Hits home I got bored after the 2nd eden raid tier and wanted to try something new and tried to Q for pvp. though if you play anything else beside tank or heal and even by playing them half an hour Q time. I then unlocked frontline duty and then I fell in love again, first times were crazy and fun I didn't cared about winning or losing it was so fresh and new to me, after a while you begin to understand how it works and it feels great to coordinate with your teammate.

But even that only delayed the inevitable mainly because the only time you can get into an instance is arround an hour before reset and a 1-2 hours after in my data center exception being Saturday and Sunday.

in the end i stopped paying my sub because I felt without purpose in the game even though i love it the feeling of playing just to make your sub worth the investment and in the end just sitting arround was too much (I have to admit I did not go for Eureka but doing it alone always convinced me not going for it and I'm not mentally strong enough to go for the ARR relics)

  6. There was a time when the devs were required to play other MMOs to see what they were doing so that XIV could be developed into a game that was modern and fun to play. Clearly they haven't done that in a long time.

  7. Pvp does need rework however that will most likely not happen in a long time since it would take away from work on pve content , and most likely that would mean backlash since it's the same story with BLU, people who like it will bitch it's not rework and people who don't will bitch because it's content that Doesn't matter and it's not integral to main content.
FFXIV does have a problem with content relevancy and replayability mostly for the design structure it has , the only way to "fix" that without a mayor overhaul would be to implement those same content ideas in the ffxiv open world but that would take a lot of time and resources due to what I've seen people refer as spaghetti code.
Item wise I think it's quite nice if you like JRPGS , it's quite basic to the roots JRPGS item equipment , I think gear mostly becomes unique only at melding stage that's when each jobs uniqueness comes into play more so than just by pure rotation.

  8. why this is an intelligent move by square is because the meta will always define what spec is best so if you remove the so called "freedom of choice" your left with something you can actually master without fear of it becoming useless in the future. i love that every class is viable and there really isnt any meta behind just playing the job.

  9. I feel like this game would be perfect to me if they had more exciting world content, better pvp, & some sort of system to make dungeons worth doing at end game outside of glamour (not quite like Mythic+, but maybe some sort of scaling system?). As someone who's played WoW since 2006, I definitely think this is the better overall game though.

  10. I love this game and i don‘t want to be bitter.

    But damn.
I am so disappointed in Role Actions and Healer.

Back in ARR and HW we had Cross-Class skills that were actually pretty cool and i wish they had further dug into that rather than shafting it into bland and boring Role Actions.

And i really wanted to play Healer in Shadowbringers but my god.
They are incredibly boring carbon copies of each other.
They are barely different and i don‘t get why even Bane was removed and every single one of them just have 3 dps abilities, if they design content with Healers dealing damage in mind.

There is one single target, one aoe, and one dot.
You don‘t have to deal with stance dancing anymore either and.. like..
    fuck man.

I really want OG Cleric Stance back.

With them bringing up Skill floors the classes just become really watered down a lot.

I really enjoy Bozja‘s Lost Actions to finally get a breath of fresh air for the jobs.

Their Obsession in sqeaky clean balance and streamlining further and further keeps a lot of fun at bay.

  11. I agree with your points. But I think Square-Enix are afraid to change their formula because of backlash. There is a large chuck of the community that are afraid of change and why mess with it while its printing money. Wow in contrast are not afraid to change it up. Sometimes it doesn't work WOD being a prime example, but they at least have the confidence to try an innovate.

  12. The skill set in pvp is not the problem . Its was WAAYYY more inbalance in the past before they changed it …. Healer and ranged physical were way too strong while they other suffered from there lack of utility and mobility . There's 2 problems i see personnaly:

    1. The server ''Tick'' . it need 3 secondes for the server to get the change of location and the ability you use . This is too long.

    2. Rewards. I dont see anything useful on going into pvp otherwise stuff like mounts being stuck on acievement that you cant finish because of the lack of player . Bring stats back on gear so you can get high level gear for high end content , this would change the routine instead of always going with tomestomb or 8 man normal raid . ( i would go with pvp stats as well , those who play the content deserve to be rewarded )

  13. I just think they need to start adding back things like phys vs mag damage resistances, status ailments and the need for buffs and debuffs that are not just damage boosts. Those are the main things that made the job system possible in the main line games. Right now the jobs are too similar and I think it could be remedied if they let you main a role instead of a single job in the role and pushed you to swap jobs based on the content and the group you have, even in a dungeon, if I queue as a WHM and realize we need a different tactic, let me swap to another healer that has different strengths and weaknesses. I think that would make sense with the job change system and then they could make the jobs play veey different from each other because they work for different content and groups. Healers are the example, the 2 pure, 2 shield thing works perfect for balance now but how do you add anything else later when the only difference you can have is shield vs heals and then self damage/burst heal/shield vs group support/utility?

  14. I actually maxed all my chars on Ffxiv somewhere in september last year and decided to try out WoW. I swear the talent system, legendaries, covenant and even trinkets make ffxiv jobs n roles look bland n boring af. Healers n tanks in ffxiv probably have it the worst coz they are so similar to each other coz of balance. I wish ffxiv would give players more flexibility with building classes.

  15. I feel like this is such a hard thing to do, nowdays with so many people researching constantly whats the best way to deal damage etc, even content that does give you the illusion of choice, like bozja lost spells, in the end if you want to deal the maximum damage, it all boils down to specific things, which honestly I think its unavoidable. It's all mathematics/calculations, a specific way of doing things is going to result in a better outcome than the others. In the end my personal feelings on this is no, you dont need to maximize your damage all the time, if you want to do a rotation that is more your own and you have more fun with it, as long as it doesn't bring the rest of the party down and becoming a wall on your party progress, then go ahead and do it. Its not all about having the 99 parse. If you can clear with what you are doing, its good enough.

  16. Can you address the 30 minutes penalty system and how it, although protect players, it is also unfair for players that tried to make the duty work and failed and get punished for leaving, I had a duty roullete party wiped 4 times within 10 min and didn't listen to my instruction to help them and us clear it

  17. Like/dislike ratio says everything you need to know about the GCBTW. There is a sizeable faction within the XIV player base that is so afraid of this game becoming teh evul World of Warcraft, that they would prefer XIV stagnate itself into irrelevancy than try something new.

Great video, man. You bring up excellent points. Hopefully the right ears are listening.

  18. The only take away I got from watching this is WoW is better at pvp than ffxiv and no legendaries in ffxiv like you do in Shadowlands. I play both WoW and FFXIV. I have done all content in WoW and class balance is bad. M+ loot chance is bad (And not even worth due to being in full Heroic CN gear) – FFXIV has better story and PVE content. WoW is great for fast-pace PvP content. But when several classes aren't viable in PvP OR Raiding in WoW, it just makes people mad. Would YOU want a havoc DH for PvP? No. How about raiding? No. What about MW in raiding? No. MW in PvP? Not anymore. They're gutted. Pally's are broken as hell right now and blizzard is looking to only buff them further. Fury for WAR isn't even a thought right now. WoW is in a terrible place, and the story is awful going forward, etc. However, I give WoW title for MMO PvP because it's fluid and gives you choice on what you can do. More so than most MMO PvP systems. So I give WoW that and they do try to balance it out (Even though almost all PvP communities in WoW are saying how awful it is.. Still the only thing to do right now..) But anywho. Both games have faults. Both games have good things. I'll still play both as they each provide different desirable things. But I do wish things would change in both WoW and FFXIV.

  20. The issues you presented are some of the biggest reasons why my interest in XIV waned over time and led me to ultimately quit the game.
Regarding PvP, in my opinion no matter what changes they make, it'll always suck for as long as they keep their netcode as it is, it's an issue that plagues the entire game but PvP in particular with heals going off on dead bodies all the time, melee abilities not going off even though I'm in melee and everything feeling delayed as fuck even though I play with good ping.
I think people don't talk nearly enough about XIV's issues. Your video is well presented and certainly not worthy of that like/dislike ration lol, it's like people just take it personally if you dare talk critically about their game or (god forbid!) compare it to its direct competitors. If you make another video I'd be interested in your take regarding how job design evolved through the expansions, a lot of people I talked to actually disliked how tanks and healers (rip SCH) in particular suffered ability pruning in Shadowbringers.

  21. Here my upvote. PvP is not the only thing that FF14 could improve. The graphic look outdated and the skill animations could be better too. Also the races (human or animal-like humans) doesn't bring any diversity in the game. That was the reason why i quit the game after level 30. It may be a good game, but GW2, SWTOR, WoW, … has more creativity in it that fits my need for fantasy.

  22. you can also only sign up with 3 other friends in pvp, which sucks tbh because they got rid of the 24 man pvp so even with an 8 man group there is still 2 other raids that are random, but with pvp in ff they need a big change because healers are just too op and it is now about taking points not actual fighting over points anymore, you have it and can leave it. I prefer the old style where you have to control the point to gain anything from it, forces you to actually pvp. but yeah after coming back from BDO the pvp in ff is like Fischer price first toy xD

  24. I am late to the party but some thoughts. Because I can fill hundreds of pages with stuff to this topic. I understand that more depth and something like a "build" would be nice but I also think the current state is a strength. In terms of development cycle it's predictable and especially WoW is currently struggling to keep all their systems managed.
With more depth you need more developers, better communications between teams and a solid backend. We all know that XIV is struggling with their servers. Currently curious how their cross-datacenter communication is going to be. And how many restrictions we get for that system. I wish they would just start from zero again because it pains me. I have a clear picture how it all went down for 2.0 and why they can't refactor a lot of code. I really hope they do something about it in the future.
Also they already have server capacity problems from enmity calculation problems to already doing a "stat squish". Very restrictive housing zones because they need a full always online instance for every district. It pains me. That is one thing the WoW devs took care of very early on and they really know how to deal with numbers. Just that they go overboard and crash their servers nonetheless (hello BfA open world pvp and epic battlegorunds xD).

So servers are the first thing why I wouldn't introduce more complex systems and mechanics. The second is that the devs have to carefully adjust their work environment.
But there is a third factor why I would stay away from introducing more or even too much depth into the game. No tools for players to understand the depth of the game without violating the ToS. And I think it's a good thing XIV doesn't want to go this route. WoW is the perfect example how to go to far. Too much change every addon or even patch cycle and that ends in to much complexity.

There is a possibilty to find a middleground but why would they? They have a system that is working and apparently player numbers go up. And I want to argue that PvP is not the holy grail to keep a game alive. It is an easy one if it's running but can also lead to other problems. And yes the PvP in XIV is bad, nothing to argue there. Also you probably can't change the perception of the internet that XIV is not a PvP game. Even if they would make it better than WoW.

You can't change the core community of a game and not run into major problems on the way and the risk of doing more damage than good.

Things people should ask themselfs. Do I really need this and that from my one and only game I play? Is it good to get everything at the same place instead of going to different places to fulfill my needs?
I was in the same boat of wanting everything in one game and to change with me. To grow with me. But people change and if a game changes it has repercussions for the health of the game.

The biggest thing I appreciate from XIV… they slow down your day and you can finally relax more. It's more chill and fun in that regard. If I want something more fast paced and complex… I switch the game. Don't have a main game if you want more. Fulfill your needs at different places.

This was my tl;dr… even if probably no one is going to read it :X

I really, really want these guys just to take a damn risk. Try something new. We've had literally the same damn shit since ARR. It never changes.

    Take a risk!

  26. its so hilarious and depressing to me how every video criticizing xiv has a barrage of dislikes. Like, the reason people vent concerns is because they care for the game and want it to be the best it can be. Yet these people shove their rose tinted blindfolds on and refuse to see anything negative at all.

  27. My problem with FFXIV is the lack of freedom; you are told what armour you can wear, told what weapon you can use, told what spells and abilities you can use and when you can use them, and told what classes dungeon groups consist of. Serious hand-holding.

  28. I'd take less optimized balance between jobs for some chaos in the gameplay all day!(pinch of it tho, not soo much!)
Sure it will make some jobs less favorable in pugs, but let's be honest it's not like they dont do it now, and people that loves their job will still play it regardless, wow is on the extreme with this and i still saw some survival hunters out there

  29. You know why WoW is dying? because of what you asked there in the begining of the video. Shit got too complicated, i dont have time to deal with all this bullshit, Legendaries? they are useless in WoW since WoD. Also each brand new system blizzard brought to the new expansions fked everything. Look at how covenants are right now? Its a mess and people at blizzard have a huge burden on their hands tweaking everything to make it work, just like you said: its a disaster to keep things balanced. But i dont think its worth the risk.

Keep shit simple, thats why everyone is going back to TBC. No one wants to become a slave of your own character progression and metas.
