Final Fantasy 14 Endwalker Monk has received some good and bad criticism in the community about if the monk rework is good. Today I wanted to try to break down what some of the differences are and how we can start processing the way FF14 monk will work going forward.

Thanks for the video! Always love hearing about Monk. I think especially now as people are still trying to find a new flow.
giving us 2 stacks of Perfect balance then having to wait for that third one is painful ;p So I am seeing is Monk is the same( aside from positionals lost) but it's got this Added Gauge to do the big hitters.
Kinda reminds me of Astro's seals. Which I love for Astro,..but for Monk,..ehhh,..
I am in the same spot as you, just grinding my Monk through MSQ, trying to get my muscle memory to accommodate the new gauge.
Thanks for the video, like you said. We still not sure what the optimal way is, but this is definitely a start for my casual ass lol. But your definitely right on knowing Monk when you hit 60, I just wish I got to see how stuff was at 80 before the patch
After ur third pb – do u do an opo opo only pb again?
Aye you made the video thank you so much !
How long does the elixir field & feint strike last? If we got jumpy boss are we going to have the drop DPS problems similar to ARR? Great video too!!!
Non monk main question: Are there reasons to do the different finishers? Are they functionally any different? It just kinda seems like a checklist.
Bard also has a "fill up your gauge with these icons by doing what you normally do" aspect to their job now, but at least the bard's songs add some new interactions to the gameplay.
Astro also has a similar thing, but the card system requires some decision-making and a dash of RNG.
Maybe Samurai too? I have no idea, hardly touched it.
My point is I just feel like I'm missing something.
Regardless, great video. I'll be giving monk an honest try regardless. I want to like it. I believe in the devs. 🙂
THANK YOU!!!! I was confused on this for a hot min, I understood it was similar to sam and ninja but wasn't sure how things worked and this cleared it up for me!
So, yeah that's what I basically found out. Chakras still operate the same, the basic form combos are all there but Perfect Balance sort of now allows you to make like your custom combos, whence the free flow.
This was such a great video. I don’t mind the changes but I did feel like monk was a whole new job and that was extremely frustrating, also as a monk main. I’m beginning to get it, but it’s definitely like retraining that muscle memory 😅. Super appreciate you making this vid cause it reaffirms what I was thinking on the new rotation.
If i had a chance to sit down with Yoshi P. Id ask him if when you think "THEE monk skill when you think class fantasy " does the skill "perfect balance" seem like the best fit? i just seems lame to gate a decent enough chakra system behind 1 lame skill, …that does nothing other than let you play your mechanic, and it only having two charges so you can't even do a full rotation like you said.
Was nice to see my hotbar set up is pretty close to yours as a 1.0 mnk i never looked into min maxing it because i was getting flamed on Shiva ex and switched jobs. But ive come back to monk to slap Xenos around and end this ff14 story how it began and I'll stick it out to 90 just for that even i feel the changes to monk seem kinda.. off the mark?
They did us dirty man. -4 positional is sad and takes out the fun of using RoE/TN, but the -3 oGCDs for 1 GCD just make the class feel slow as syrup and underwhelming.
Since PB cannot be activated out of combat, there won't be any pre-pull PB.
Opener should look something like this:
With good ping, you should be able to double weave without clipping as long as you dont play with any additional SkSpd.
Prepull Pot or RoW
1) Thunderclap
2) DK + Pot / RoW
3) TwS + TFC , RoF
4) Demolish + PB, BH
5) BS + TFC (whenever it's up)
6) DK + TFC (whenever it's up)
7) BS + TFC (whenever it's up)
8) Elixir Field + PB, TFC (whenever it's up)
9) DK + TFC (whenever it's up)
10) TwS + TFC (whenever it's up)
11) Demolish + TFC (whenever it's up)
12) Rising Phoenix
Save your PB stacks up till 2 until your next 60/120s window unless the fight forces a downtime.
Monk main here as well.
Appreciate it Sensei Jay. Been getting the hang out of the new stuff but it’s definitely taking some getting used to
Just a FYI. You actually can't Pre Pull with Perfect Balance so the opener is going to look different. I didn't realize the other two training dummies were active when I made this 😭 but this video at least starts helping with the how PB works. I will be dropping another video in the next day or so to share some tips and new opener ideas. Appreciate all the comments as always ❤
so the 4th skill is never used? the one where you do 2 of the same form and 1 different?
One thing that feels kind of bad from my initial impressions is that we've lost Elixir Field and Tornado Kick behind this new mechanic AND it's not an oGCD which feels… off to me? I feel weird just having less buttons to press between my GCD moves.
Maybe I'm being silly of course since I'm still level 81 with my Monk, but I won't deny it does feel kind of worse in that regard. I was kind of excited before getting my hands on it thinking about these attacks as new oGCDs/things to consider on top of what we had in the 5.x series leading up the Endwalker after they cut Greased Lightning. Having PB only have 3 stacks too just so we can build these Chakras feels a bit off too? Again… I am probably being too pre-judgmental since I'm quite early in my MNK leveling, but the more I think about it the more I'm kind of on the fence about this system. More because of what we've lost to get it. I would have preferred if it was on top of what we already had (assuming that even makes any sense lol).
And yeah :v why make DK and Bootshine lose their positionals? It just seems an odd change to me? Just kind of messes with my muscle memory and makes me wonder what the point of having RoE's "remove positionals" buff when we only have 2 now?
Don't mind me too much though. Despite considering MNK my main DPS class (and just kind of main overall since I've done the most EX content with it and only one 80 Savage Raid – with Echo lol…) I am by no means a person with the knowledge of someone from The Balance or just someone who knows how to crunch the numbers better on figuring out how to optimally play classes. Just sort of me… semi-casual take on it thus far. Only half way through the video :v I should keep watching… ima post this tho before my thoughts get carried away into an even bigger essay grade comment.
edit: just one final thought before I need to run off to school, but yeah it is interesting they're trying to break us out of the 1,2,3 stuff for our finisher moves. To repeat myself a bit from earlier, it will be interesting seeing what people come up with. I am just being a bit silly most likely and kind of sad we've lost some of our extra oGCD moves to facilitate the new system. But I'll withhold further judgement on MNK until I hit 90 in 2-million years :v when the Queues subside and I am free of working lol. I still fully intend to Main it of course.
I've been a monk since ARR launch on PS3 and it was my main in every expansion even when it was memed on but these changes have me sad and angry. I personally have never liked burst damage and always preferred monk's identity as the sustain damage dps and I feel like that's finally gone. to be fair it started to lose that identity the moment Forbidden chakra (and especially brotherhood) was added but it was still about attacking fast and hitting positionals. this blitz system does not appeal to me at all and the loss of 4 positional has finally got me vocal about my hate of the job changes.
I highly dislike what they have done…
Don't get me wrong there is good thing , i like thunderclap, blitz etc.
But we got ripped off a little too much, oGCD, positionals.
No new animation or whatever, no GL4 animation back, no oGCD compensation, no Positionals compensation, no new animation on old skill like DRG received.
It's freaking bad, and got me pissed off a lot because actually they can do something really good but they don't.
It's a very very lazy work what they have done… Not gonna enter into the explanation, but know that each expansion they messed up… Then it have been YEARS of sh$$ update until SHB strip down MNK to barebone for a "renew" of MNK, i will do a thread after reaching lvl90, but yeah Good = 20%, Bad = 80% for me.
Haha I couldn't give up on Monk either! I was trying other jobs and nothing jumped out at me and I thought well they basically made monk a new job I should treat it that way and approach it from a different angle. I am no number cruncher and in the big picture a newer player but here are my thoughts.
With the buff to twin snakes it is more important to make sure it is up all the time. So pre pull is Meditation + Form Shift and open with Twin Snakes and demolish + Forbidden Charka PB
Blitz grants formless fist, so first and second PB for me has been DK, BS, DK, Blitz, BS, Twin Snakes, SP Second PB DK, True Strike, Demolish, Blitz, BS
All the blitz moves are AOE and your AOE moves count in filling the beast chakra meter soooo we are going to be pretty good at AOE
Just a few of the bright spots I have found to keep myself interested in playing monk. It is fun now but will this get old once these rotations become muscle memory? I fear it will since I don't really have to worry about position anymore and they did not add anything new for us to work into our rotations but I can only find that out by playing a lot of monk and that is enough for me 😀
Thank you for putting these videos out! I have been itching to talk about these changes with other monks.
Anatman and six sided star 😠
I think the right change is to change perfect balance from a charge time to a recast time. That way skill speed can come into play and level out the rotation. 40sec for a stack is crazy when compared to other dps professions. As it stands perfect balance doesn't have synergy with the kit and greased lightning as a passive is underwhelming.
I absolutely hate this monk. been a mnk main since 2.0, every savage, ultimate and extreme progged as mnk.
But this rework makes the class so damn boring and awkward with buff and ability timers. It's core rotation was always fun and engaging all the time because of the positionals or keeping GL stacks up pre shb rework. Now I just sit still, hit buttons, occasionally single weave, then hit a few of those same skills to do a big hit (that doesnt line up with even your own buffs)….that's not fun…. It's just so dumbed down it went from the hardest melee to the easiest imo. Boring.
This video helped a lot with me re learning monk. I feel way more confident in my play now having atleast a foundation to work with before the super optimal stuff comes out. Thank you my man. Also in my personal opinion monk would be perfect with PB with a 3rd stack with a 40 second cool down maybe? So it lines up with the 120s
I'm overall satisfied with the changes and I don't mind that we don't have new abilities because the traits make up for the lack of abilities. There's only two things I wish that they would change and I think I'll be Satisfied 100%.
1. Maybe it's just me but I feel like you can't cut the animation of Elixir field I feel like I'm animation locked and that's not conducive two fitting everything in the burst window.
2. I would really appreciate either Perfect Balance being able to be used before fight or give me a third charge or make the cool down a bit less.
But seriously those are kind of minor to me. I like a challenge and I like being able to make something work within the challenge. And nothing here feels like I have to go out of my way to do something. It all flows pretty well
As a monk main, logged in…looked at my monk… instant let down. If I wanted to play ninja..I would. I started trying to see wtf all that non-sense was… then got kicked out. Haven't been back due to the ongoing queue issues. TBH… they ruined monk. I might be wrong, but that is how I feel. If I end up being able to log on to the game to get into the MSQ I am going to have to use my drk :/
I cannot stress how boring the rotation is when perfect balance is on cooldown.
Dont sleep on six sided fam lol
Just tried it, wtf it's so weird.
I think this ammount of buttons monk has in Endwalker is optimal, even if you don't get much new stuff past level 60.
Do not use PB until you have your 10% buff and DoT . Use you laeden fist buff bootshine before going into PB.
Once in PB use DK > BSh > DK >Masterful > Bsh > TS > Demo > Masterful > Back to normal rotation. DO NOT DOUBLE WEAVE.
Weave in RoW > RoF > TFC before you go into PB also. Execute Brotherhood after your first GCD in PB.
Please, this is the correct rotation.
I know we don't like to talk about Anatman but I did find a use for it over the weekend, albeit situational. Maybe this isn't new info to anyone, but it freezes the timer on your combos while active. So if you're mid-combo when a boss does an unskippable mechanic, or something that requires you to get to a safe distance away, you can pop it to save your combo. I believe it also works for your masterful blitz stacks
Glad I'm starting over (playing with friends through the whole thing) and i was a monk main last time I played
so glad that there are only 2 positionals. I could not find any joy at all in the class with all the positionals before and now it may be my main for Endwalker. So fun now!
As someone who folded on MNK after Heavensward, and decided to go back to it at the end of ShB, this is extremely helpful for me. Thank you SO much for sharing your thoughts, concerns and the whole entire rundown!
MNK main as well. Looks like there are a LOT less buttons to press which was always a really fun thing about MNK. But good news is I think they have such a fantastic base to build off of with the beast Chakra system. So I can't wait to see what they do in 7.0
