  1. I've tried it a few times but have always had to go back to standard. I've never had a problem with gaze mechanics except for when I accidentally cast something too soon and my character automatically faces the target anyway. The hardest thing for me is keeping my character from turning around and back peddling when I'm running in front of a group and casting behind me, for instance when I pull aggro with an AoE and continue running while throwing Tomahawks behind me, I have to keep the camera facing away from where I'm casting. It seems like it's the same with both movement types unless I'm doing something wrong.

  2. I'm dead tired of "Legacy movement elitism", and people telling me that using Standard mode is not a valid way to play the game. I prefer the standard controls, regardless of if the strafe tweaks are made or not. I think people should be able to pick whichever style they prefer without being called "suboptimal" because other people find theirs better.
I can see you tried to avoid shaming Standard movement players, and appreciate it, but it still feels aggravating to hear "Legacy movement […] is actually superior in all regards" just give it a chance (0:09). I gave it a chance, and I don't like Legacy mode.

In short: play with whichever mode you like. You can explain why you like yours and have a conversation, but please stop telling others that they are playing the game wrong for using the other mode.

  3. Legacy mode feels weird at first but it’s better than Standard mode for this game and you will never want to go back when you use it.

The reasoning behind why it’s better is that the auto face target option is clunky with standard and it will mess your movement up by making you move in a different direction than you were going. With Legacy this doesn’t happen so you can essentially cast backwards, making your uptime higher on bosses.

Also while it is possible to turn around quickly with standard, it’s more effort and input as opposed to hitting S with Legacy mode.

  4. I stay on Standard, i also play WoW sometimes and its really weird to switch to movement and i use the Mouse for movement since years, switching back to keyboard feels strange

  5. i already play a long time with legacy without any changes to the strafe, maybe we've played different mmo's but this is standard for a lot of old mmo's i played before.

  6. wow this is some pretty interesting stuff, i don't think i'll use it though since-
"just replace turn buttons with strafe buttons"
…since i did that within 10 minutes of starting the game

  7. Because I play on both PC and PS5 I noticed something interesting, that I don't think a lot of people know. I play with controller on both systems most of the time and switch to mouse&keyboard on both systems occasionally for furnishing, for example.

When I play on controller I prefer the legacy type because of the full 360 degree movement. But I noticed that some of my friends say they would prefer legacy if it didn't give them motion-sickness. And when I played on the PC with a controller I noticed a strange difference which also gave me slight motion sickness which never happened on console (PS4 back then) before.
The difference is that if you run forward you never perfectly run forward 100%. (Or 12 o'clock in clock-directions) You will always run slightly to the left or right. And because of the legacy-type camera, the camera will always all too slightly follow that side-movement, which you then have to counteract to. So you constantly counteract slightly to the left and right to fight against the camera.

But on console, this problem doesn't exist at all. It's because on a system-level, consoles already have subtle tweaks, you won't notice, but make the controller experience as good as possible. In this case, consoles always use a cross-shaped dead zone for the left stick. As you know, a dead zone for an analogue stick makes it so that the game doesn't register every micro-movement of the stick. An analogue stick is very sensitive and even the tiniest movement into a direction because of imperfections of the controller's plastic case would be registered. If that information was all send to the game, your character would always walk off cliffs even if you weren't touching your controller. So you typically have a dead zone, formed like a circle around the middle-point to define how much you need to pull your analogue stick to actually move your character.

But what does this have to do with motion sickness in FFXIV and what would be the benefit of any other shape than a circle? If you choose a cross-shaped dead zone there is a certain window in each of the four directions, I'll call them north, east, south and west, where the system registers the pull of your stick as perfectly straight into that direction. Only when you leave the dead zone the system will move your input more and more into the actual stick direction. Remember that cross-shaped dead zones are not completely "dead" into north, east, south and west. The north and south parts of the cross-shaped dead zones are only "dead" for the X-axis, while the east and west parts of the cross are only "dead" for the Y-axis. Meaning that you can still perfectly walk forward slowly as you would expect. The difference is just that your character will walk or run perfectly straight forward, without the camera moving slightly to the left or to the right all the time.

To make use of this on PC, start FFXIV through Steam. You can use Steam to start FFXIV even if you bought the Windows version (like I did), by adding the FFXIV as a Steam-foreign game. Steam allows you to configure the dead-zone of your controller for each game. When you are on the game's page, click on the small gear icon and go to manage-> controller layout. By clicking on the left stick movement tab thing, you can set up the dead zone and its shape however you like.
You can find a ton of videos online about cross-shaped dead-zones and think about what would be best for your preference.

  8. Xeno had a video like this as well and if I remember correctly, he also recommends to change S to move forward so you can free up the W button. Personally, I have not tried it out – but logically if you get used to it, your reactions become better and you avoid backpedaling altogether. Also comes with the benefit of freeing up a button which is always nice. I like standard, I'm just a casual player so I never had the need to improve my reaction time since casual content is easy. I can dodge gaze mechanics with normal means like holding right click and swiftly turning my character around – its not the best way but it doesn't bother me really.

I might try out legacy if I ever decide to do higher level content but for now, I feel standard is fine.

  9. I've NEVER had to strafe, Not a single day in my life. So I see no point in this… Is their any benefit to strafe? isn't the whole point of strafe to keep you from having to slowly turn to get out of an AoE? I can already do that in legacy…
