  1. Key tips for starting: focus on the main story quests, ignore the side quests for the time being. The main quest symbol looks like a flame around the exclamation mark. Take your time and enjoy the story!

  2. Welcome to Eorzea! FFXIV is the heavy story-telling game so please expect walls of texts incoming 😅😅

But to play this game, you just have to chill and enjoy the scenery or the flow of story (from an adventure looking for a job to earn some coins to something more). No need to rush since this game doesn’t have the FOMO so take all the time you need! 🎉

  3. WELCOME TO FINAL FANTASY XIV!

To give a brief spoiler free explanation about the opening cutscene: So this was essentially the ending to the game when the game first launched. When it launched, the reception to the game was VERY poor. There were so many problems that it was decided that it was going to be better to start from scratch and remake the game than it would be to just patch the game that launched. But in a cool twist, they decided to tie in them making sweeping changes to the game be part of the story. There is a fantastic documentary series by noclip about the launch and relaunch of the game. This scene was first seen by the players right as the servers for the first game we shut down.

Anyway, about the scene: There is a battle between two armies, one that is from a collection of the 3 main city-states in the game that the player character was able to gather together and help get over their differences to meet the invading army of Garlemald. One of the Garlemald generals has a "fantastic" idea to call down one of the moons and have it crash down on your land. This moon is the giant red orb you see in the sky in the beginning. In a shocking twist that was meant to be a surprise even to the players watching as the video debuted, the moon then opens to reveal it was actually a prison for a powerful and ancient dragon named Bahamut (a reoccurring creature in Final Fantasy games, sometimes summoned by the player as a powerful spell, sometimes as enemy to fight). As Bahamut rains destruction down on the land, the player character is protected by your main mentor, Louisoix. Louisoix then tries to rebind Bahamut in another prison, using help from the prayers some of his other followers are offering to "the twelve," the pantheon of gods of your realm. However, the spell fails. Before Bahamut can kill the player, Louisoix teleports you away before smiling as he meets his end. You then see the player appear after being teleported not only away from what happened, but forward in time as well.

What happened to Bahamut afterwards was a mystery, but he did cause huge damage to the realm and the 3 main city states. The Garlean military also suffered heavy losses and had to retreat. The character that YOU made is not necessarily the same as what was in this scene. All returning players were able to use their old characters from the first launch of the game, but the game gave a hand wavey reason for why no one recognized you. The character YOU made can be that if you want them to be or can be someone completely new, whatever you want your head canon to be.

Glad you picked archer for your class, that is one of my favorites (my main is a healer though). However, if you have not been told, one of the coolest parts of FFXIV compared to World of Warcraft is that you do not have to make alt characters to play other classes. You can play all the classes in the game on just one character. Easy subscribe to you channel, glad this showed up on my recommended list

  4. Welcome to Eorzea! I truly hope you enjoy your stay here! 🙂 I'll second the comments telling you to avoid the "filler" quests for now, unless they offer a reward you want. (For example, each City-State has one yellow quest that will teach you an emote, and once you're a little further along, you can unlock The Gold Saucer with gold quests) None of that is necessary, but all can be fun diversions, if you want a little break. 🙂 Also, You're in the right city for it, there's a Starlight Celebration going on right now once you reach level 15 you can take part in, it's cute and gives a good reward. 🙂

  5. As for questing, the MSQ (Main Scenario Quest) is the backbone of the game, shows in the upper left of your screen. Sheer levels by themselves unlock almost nothing without matching progress with the MSQ. Also important will be your class quest, listed right below the MSQ. Class quest will be shown based on whatever class you are currently on. Side quests can general be ignored, especially on a server like Alpha, which is very new and you are getting a 100% xp bonus for everything you do there. The early quests in the city itself, however, can be very useful. Some will give better armor bits as rewards, needed soon after to pass an equipment check with an NPC. Many of the others are situated to help you learn the city layout as you follow them up. Do try to find and attune to all the small aetherites in the city (fast travel mechanisms) as doing so will unlock additional destinations to assist you bouncing around the city proper.

  6. Please make sure to take your time.

As others have said, please focus on the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ) (default at top left corner), Class/Job Quests (shows up right under Main Scenario Quest), and do the Blue+ quests (unlocks features and dungeons).

Everything else is pretty optional, and you can get back to most content once you finish MSQ.

  7. Welcome to world of FF14. Intro cinematic is about end of 1.0 and game transformation to 2.0. that is still area that game can improve. Some characters were developed in 1.0 and for newcomers (most of players) there is still some character background missing.

  8. No spoilers.
An empire launched attack on free states, but their main ship was destroyed by dragon (part of 1.0 cinematic) than they come with crazy plan of taking down a moon on continent and with that killing everybody, but it was not an ordinary moon it contained a huge dragon (2.0 cinematic that you saw)

  9. the two best things about ff14 is the story, that you can have every job on one character and the community….. the three best things about ff14 is the story, having everything on one character, the community and character customization. To answer a question in character creation there is a thing you can unlock early on that lets you change minor cosmetic things (hair, facepaint etc) and at a level 50 main story quest nets you a free "Fantasia" that lets you change everything about your character except the name. once you complete the level 10 class quest you can start getting the other jobs. looks like your on the same data centre as me. the "little cutie" on the loading screen is Moogle, the thing above its head is a "pom" thing. the intro and first 15 levels of the main story quests are actually different depending on which city you start in. enjoy the game.

  10. This cutscene can be a bit confusing to people unfamiliar with the story of FFXIV 1.0, the precursor to A Realm Reborn. What you're playing is technically FFXIV 2.0, so it shouldn't be considered spoilers to give you some backstory.

In 1.0, one of the military leaders of the Garlean Empire, the invading army you see in this trailer controlling the machines, came up with a plan. This leader decided to use the Empire's technology and ancient secrets it had unearthed to bring down one of the planet's moons, called "Dalamud," and drop it on Eorzea (which is the land where you start the game). Basically, they wanted to use it like a nuclear bomb.

What they didn't know was, the moon wasn't empty–it was a prison created by an ancient civilization to contain a being of incredible power (the massive dragon you see in the trailer). This trailer shows you what happened when it broke free.

The old man fighting against the dragon in the trailer was named Louisoix Leveilleur (pronounced Lew'ee'swah Lev'ay'yer). He was the leader of a group that came to Eorzea to help it defend against the Garlean invasion. He was an important NPC in 1.0, and this trailer shows his battle with Bahamut (the dragon), his failure to contain it, then finally his dying act: to transport the heroes away from the battlefield so they can live to fight another day.

That's when FFXIV: A Realm Reborn begins, with a timeskip to 5 years after the events of this cutscene.

Think of this like a (very) simplified summary of 1.0. That version of FFXIV was considered a failure, but the lore it established was actually pretty good.

I hope this helps, and welcome to Eorzea.👍
