EXTENSIVE REWORKS WERE ANNOUNCED FOR DRAGOON AND ASTROLOGIAN IN Final Fantasy XIV! This might actually shock and worry a lot of people, myself included. I used to play a TON of Nocturnal Astrologian and to hear that Astrologian is once again on the rework block makes me very nervous.
Dragoon too, what kind of extensive large scale changes could the developers have in mind for that? Dragoon is easily one of the most beloved jobs in ALL of Final Fantasy XIV currently… what sort of giant big rework does it need?
Let’s discuss all of that in this video.

This comes from a place of GENUINE concern. I miss Nocturnal Astrologian SO MUCH I CAN BARELY PUT IT INTO WORDS! I'm VERY worried at reworks announced in today's live letter! VERY worried!
getting real worried here, they murdered Monk, i mained it since ARR now i can not be arsed to play it, i see DRG getting even more bull shit..
but the real problem i have is, they are dumbing down job after job yet it does nothing to help the reall problem, people getting level 90 raids and still having no idea about simple things like Stack Markers or gaze attacks. Don't make jobs easier unless the player base actually NEEDS it, make sure the player base can pull off the mechanics that are seen EVERYWHERE first.
the games mechanics teaching is what is in need of work, not the jobs.
I will say that after having just got dragoon to 80, dragoon is really fun at higher levels, but the lower levels are an absolute nightmare to play through so maybe that's what the rework could be focusing on
This feels like a change on the level that Summoner got, which on one hand I love, but on the other made the job very basic. I feel like Astro is going to get a completely new identity. Good? Bad? Let's hope they know what they are doing.
For Dragoon I can see them doing something with Dragon Sight to enable your Nastrond phase in the opener, maybe even change how the eyes work, for example they could create a link to a party member like Dancepartner or Kardia which gives your linked "Eye Partner" a buff if you use specific abilities. That actually would make Dragon Sight way more convenient to use, instead of clicking players in your opener or using macros you just select your Dance- i mean Eye Partner at the beginning and just automatically share a buff throughout the fight.
I understand AST getting reworked cause nobody like how it changed in 6.0 but DRG seems perfectly fine right now idk what needs an extensive rework about it.
Drg main here. Imo remove potency off of spine shatter and add it to dragon fire. Removes the business and improves mobility with that single change
Dragoon changes really worry me. It's in such a cozy fun spot right now..
Another Dragoon melee main here, its honestly pretty damn good atm so I'm a bit worried, but I'm also curious to see what they do..
DRG main
It's really nice to play right now. Everything flows nicely. I suppose if they got rid of Life Surge like they did Kaiten, I wouldn't mind too much. Deciding what abilities to life surge is kind of easily identified.
I've resolved my Dragonsight issues by using a Focus Target macro. At the start of the instance: focus target my preferred target. My dragonsight macro targets that individual first for DragonSight. I also have a mouseover override of the macro. Looks something like:
/ac Dragon Sight <mo>
/ac Dragon Sight <f>
That being said if they made Dragonsight like a dance partner buff that would make the game easier to play.
But that's talking about what I suspect that they will do with DRG because it follows the streamlining. And that's not necessarily what I want out of a dragoon styled gameplay. Realistically, if I want the same style of button press pacing, I could play Sam or Mnk. The rotation isn't all that different in concept, just in flavor.
If they wanted to be really bold about Dragoon, they would try to differentiate it by bringing greater focus to the jumps. Make it actually play like a traditional final fantasy Dragoon where it flies in the air and hangs out up there for a round or two before crashing down for crazy damage (like they gave us with Sky Shatter in CC). I doubt they'd go this route in PVE though since they don't want dragoons to be able to dodge mechanics by being airborne. I personally don't see this as a big problem, since it would take skill to time the jumps so you actually dodge mechanics while still being around for necessary healing and buffs. Even then, if you as the dragoon happen to dodge a big mechanic and the rest of your team dies, you will still wipe. It's not like you're a paladin that can self-heal sustain indefinitely on certain fights.
If SE did every single thing you wanted for dragoon, that'd be a rework. Think about what they'd have to switch around to get to stardiver that early. A rework doesn't always constitute SMN level changes. Hell debating potency could take months.
Thing for Dragoon is that there really isn't anywhere to go with it now. What will they do next expansion? Give it another oGCD? The class is already drowning in it. Give them another combo? Dragoon already has one of the longest looping combos in the game. Upgrade GCDs? Yes but that isn't exactly expansion worthy change.
As someone who leveled dragoon relatively recently, I can almost guarantee that the problems are in the lower levels. It’s actually unspeakably horrible to level it with dungeons or any content involving more than one boss when you’re below 80 or so… the insane lack of decent AoE throughout most of the expansions still baffles me, and it would be fantastic if they could change that. Ninja doesn’t get aoe until way too late as well, but it has a lot more going on on the meantime, and it was genuinely one of only a few starter jobs/classes I enjoyed from the very start (along with Monk and Warrior). I’m a Reaper main, and Samurai is decently fun to play as well. Dragoon is the only melee I would never choose to play because of how much I came to hate it in the leveling process, even though it was pretty great towards the end.
Need a 5th healer that's regen so you can make AST a hybrid again.
oh boy im worried for drg, not looking forward to them reducing my favorite job's rotation down to 4 buttons.
I main sage so I am not to worried but I do have all 90 heals
this coes as a heartbreaking announcement, not only did the last change of astro make me force stop even learning it, capped at 46 i think, but theyre doing it again?! if i could delete a class from my roster just take astro off my damn list. and now theyre changing the only class i genuinely love as a DPS? they really just want me to quit this game dont they?
I am especially worried about these reworks too. Dragoon is my main job out of all others, and Astro is my favorite healer. Reason why is because I LOVE high APM gameplay. I never want to see my character standing still or just auto attacking. Dragoons insane amount of OGCDs compared to the other melee jobs makes it easily the most fun DPS job in the game for me. Yet considering how the community pretty much globally recognizes DRG and AST as harder jobs to play, it worries me that they’ve chosen these two jobs specifically for large scale reworks. If DRG becomes slow and boring to play idk what I will do.
I do hope they don't remove Life Surge outright. Nothing brings me joy more than DRG burst phase where you go in pressing like 5 double weaves in a row and weaving life surge into heaven's thrust is one of the integral parts of that phase.
dragoon plays perfectly with all of its off globals, i cant see anyway they could make the class better only worse
Regarding SAM change with Kaiten – It was more than just a button or a gimmick, it was part of the SAM fantasy and the job as a whole feels like it lost a core part of it's persona. I am worried that if square continues to chip away at job skills in the name of "Un-Bloating" we will see further diminishing to the game. I think the Astro changes too sucked and I miss the old card system. Who is asking for any of these changes?
Paladin main who dabbles into sam here , kaiten should have been off the gcd its the only change that was needed to it my opinion anyway
So… DRG gets a total rework, but MCH is fine?
As a dragoon main i'm waiting to see what happens. But lets be honest prior to lvl 70, dragoon is the most incomplete dps job in terms of rotations. After making BotD a trait it lot a lot of its flare and you can't draw out it's full potention until lvl 70. the other dps besides reaper have complete rotation at 50! And before you guys say "B-but look what they did to samurai and kaiten." They said they might add it back if you guys asked enough (which i know you have it's all you talk about) plus im a dark knight main and suffered with pre 6.11-6.12 living dead, blood weapon and 0 AoE combos till lvl 60+, you don't get to complain. Adjust as you say to your healers. AST seems to get reworked every patch so that's nothing new but i like it were it is. Hope the reworks aren't too extensive.
the overarching vocal majority of people who complain about this stuff is honestly laughably insane, just because you have played a job for years does not mean you have any damn idea what is good for the job, or the overall player base as a whole. the big problem is the cringy identity that people have to the jobs they play and give them the idea they know what's best, giving newer players or maybe even the devs the misinformed idea that they made poor changes or that these jobs are no longer "fun". when in reality most changes they make are better for the game as a whole.
maybe for Astro instead of range or melee cards, they do something more like direct stat buffs like buffs to critical hit, direct hit, weapon/spell speed, determination, attack power and spell power/heal power.
It'll allow more creative impact and lessening the amount of feels bads when your stuck with a range card and no range dps for example.
also since the sigil system only works on us i see no reason not to add sleeve draw and one more redraw since it feels terrible to be stuck with non aligning sigils.
I know it won't happen, but as a FFXI player I really want a wyvern someday.
Im gonna say it, i dont miss nocturnal sect. Mainly bc -.- Ive ran into so many 2 AST parties and they would sort of fight over if they used it or not. That and shields don’t stack already for sch/sge and the two other healers and their few shields after a certain point. So I dont see the use in bringing it back. 2 pure healers and 2 shield healers. Nice and even. But the cards need fixed. Maybe make em like in PVP but the Ewer card can be a mitigation instead of an LB increase. And make em effect the party so those of us on controller will stop struggling w/ their horrible selection process (i made macros for when I play on my controller I got so sick of it lol). But I am not going to loose sleep over the changes until I hear more on them, since for all we know they are good changes the community been asking for for a while lol. Its just too early to tell how worried I should be as an AST main. So he ce Im not gonna be concerned about it :3
Dragoon is perfect though now. The only issues with dragoon are with leveling it as its incredibly boring until VERY late.
It is so frustrating hearing every content creator going "Yeah i don't main this job, and i don't really care about the change personally lol". People are maining these jobs because they LIKE how they play =( I guarantee you will never ever see BLM made "Simpler" or "Easier", but every other job is fair game.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this dragoon rework tbh, Now I will wait and see what they are planning but to me it's fine as is it doesn't seem to need a full rework or anything. I can see why astro would be having a rework, it feels clunky to play to me at least and def could use a rework. But Dragoon everything is good right now like there really is nothing I can think of that needs to change. Every button feels good to press and fun to use to me, It doesn't feel like anything is button bloat hell my controller friends can fit everything on 2 hotbars. Now if the rework is to the leveling process and not going to really change how it plays I'm good with that the leveling process sucks big dookie ass. Not having an aoe until level 40 is actually incredibly stupid, Not unlocking the combo for wheeling into fang or vise versa at the same time as the ability's unlock feels awful, Spine shatter having damage tied to it is dumb( I'm in the camp that gap closers shouldn't have damage so you can just use it as a movement tool). All this being said the only reason I'm not super up and arms right now is they really seem to know what they are doing with dragoon they have yet to make a bad change to the class this expansion. All of the changes they made have been QoL not changing how the class plays and simply adding to what is already there. So I have faith in the dev team on this one, But we shall see lets hope for the best.
Wait, you mean there was a time when AST had more interesting cards than +6% damage to [job type]?
I don't play DRG or Melee jobs, however, as a controller player I think DRG could merge Dragon sight and Battle Litany in one button, same thing with BRD Raging strikes with Battle voice. Crit/DH buffs should be all replaced with flat damage. RDM has the perfect party buff. As for AST, only complain I currently have is with Crowns, too many buttons (again controller player). Also having damage or healing skills attached to RNG is annoying for mapping heals or taking advantage of burst windows, please SE change that.
