  1. Im currently help a friend thru ffxiv and shes loving it…. Cares 0% about the story and as a white mage she will just let the nay sayers die mad 😈 🤣🤣🤣

Though her comment on ARR "If I am the ultimate bad ass why am I a mail man?"

  2. The problem is the story of XIV HEAVILY contextualizes everything in the game and whenever we there's a critique of "why does X" and it's written out word for word why that is in the story, people get mad. And reasonably so. It's like going to class or job training and you sleep through all of it, and now you're at the end of the semester or training and you're suddenly complaining that nothing makes sense and it's the school or company's fault. Your classmates or coworkers are going to get annoyed.

  3. If a game doesn't have good play flow and mechanics… The story is better told in other mediums. Outside of visual novel type games, it's the mechanics that are the core of a game. You don't play Monopoly, csgo, chess, smash bros, or any other game hating the style and feel of it.

Just like not everyone wants to play arpgs or turn based jrpgs. If you don't like the actual game mechanics, it's dead on arrival.

  4. The story is the most important part of the game, Yoshi P himself said it first, it's the intent behind the game, a final fantasy game above an mmorpg, if you remove the story, sure, it's your choice, but if you're going to complain that a lot of resources are being put into story and not in other aspects, then the only answer I can give is to "play another game". It's like going to a McDonalds and saying it sucks because they spend too much of their resources in making burgers instead of seafood. A lot of people with these "Anti-SkipCutscenes" ideals are mostly running on knee-jerk reactions from previous interactions with those kind of people that could be found not only in earlier FF14 but still today in FF14 and even in other games such as WoW.

  5. When someone asks "why are we fighting this person" or "why do we have to do it this way" I just simply reply with "read the story and you'll find out" LOL It may sound a little heartless but I think over time and especially with end game content, by that time they may just get a tad bit emotionally invested into the game and love it just like I do.

  6. FFxiv's story isn't the ONLY thing that matter, so I'll just chalk that up to the typical click bait title. That being said, I argue that FFxiv's story is simply THE major component. First off, it's a FF game. What FF game ISN'T heavily story based?….That aside, it's what sets it apart from every other MMO on the market.
When people are being accused of being "protective" of the story, it's actually quite the contrary. The thing is that they're being "protective" of the possible newcomer to FFxiv. To be more specific, if we know they are the endgame shooty shooty bang bang zerg types, it stands to reason to say something like "FFxiv might not be for you". The MAIN reason for such claims is that FFxiv IS NOT endgame based. With that in mind, this type of person is extremely likely to feel dissatisfied and as if time has been wasted trying to zerg to the endgame vs. enjoying the journey which is what FFxiv is about; what any decent game should be about.
Lastly, most people that like the story are the majority while those that like it for other reasons are in the minority. More importantly, the story literally gives the context/reasons for what you are doing and why you are doing it. Needless to say, if you took away FFxiv's story, it would not be anywhere near where it is today in terms of success. Make no mistake, ppl CAN and are still more than welcome to enjoy things how they want to. It is indeed possible; just not likely in the grand scheme of things. Knowing many people that like FFxiv for "x" reason other than story just isn't most people. Having said that, when the dev team takes them into consideration, they're demographic is most likely nowhere near the top of the priority list, which is why I think ppl that like the story seek to warn the shooty shooty bang bang zerg types ahead of time.

TL; DR = Yes – ppl CAN enjoy things however they want. No – having more players doesn't automatically translate to "better" in the grand scheme of things. What matters here are realistic expectations and quality respectively.

  7. Yeah, the story can be important but there's a lot more to the game. Also, there is the story you create within the game that is completely different and maybe even at odds with the story that's being told to you from the game.

Often times the real story of a MMO are the memories you make along the way. Those experiences may be the actual story of the game or maybe some epic loot you got or just having a good time with your buddies. I remember when mmos hardly even had a storyline so I'm grateful that FFXIV has such a great one but players have the amazing capacity to create their own stories within a story.

  8. If you take away the biggest strengths of FF14 ( story) and WoW ( end game raiding) and rate what is left , you could still give FF a solid 7/10. The biggest minus is PvP against a score. Do the same with WoW, and 3/10 would be generous, and most of that rating would be the PvP. You have a solid game plus a great story on top but crap pvp compared with an absolutely pitiful game with decent pvp and challenging Raiding.

  9. FFXIV from the beginning was designed to be a final fantasy first, an mmo second, so i would say yes its the most important thing about the game.

However the option exists that you can bypass it all if it suits your fancy, no one will be none the wiser of you never bring it up. HOWEVER please don't be one of THOSE people who complain about anything story related without the needed context. You decided not to engage with the story, so the consequences for not keeping with it are yours to deal with.

I've seen a few people like this.

  10. For me it's the combination of both for the reason I play FFXIV and like it. For story it's got a good one, but if I wanted just story swtor blows it out of the water specifically the agent and inquisitor storylines. But I've played those multiple times. For gameplay, it isn't much different than WoW to be honest, but WoW doesn't engage its story quite enough to keep me interested which why I only played through three expansions of it when swtor was between theirs.

FFXIV's place between those two games I think is why I've gravitated towards it. It's a really good mix of the gameplay and decent story. It gets tropey at times, but Heavensward and Stormblood were really good at hiding those tropes. Shadowbringers has let me down narratively but the gameplay is far better than it's been since I started playing in 2014.

So I think FFXIV sits in the spectrum as the best of both worlds. With WoW being on one end with focus on gameplay and the other with swtor being heavily focused on narratives, FFXIV sits happily in the middle with features players from both ends can enjoy.

  11. Story is the point of the game I found the most distasteful. And thus the primary reason I am so hesitant to try it 14 again… I tried some time ago and put it down.
I know people love the story. I'm sorry, I simply do not.
However, even in my short trials of 14, I found a very strong and enjoyable experience outside of the MSQ. It has a very strong foundation of RPG elements which were engaging. It's honestly the crafting and class system which I found to be most engaging. Though I have yet to find a specific class which resonates with me. Regardless, it is by no means worthless.

If I want a good story, I log into Audible or buy a book. I play games because I want to explore, want to progress a character, to craft, to fight, to heal, to level. I cannot think of one game which I played for the story. I do pay attention to story and lore, some I've like, some I've hated. I would describe 14's as silly and disinteresting. If I wonder why we're killing something, their is always YouTube.

More to the point though, even without 14's story: it still offers far more content than its primary competitor, who has chosen to build chores and erode it's RPG aspects to prioritize strong Raids and Dungun's much to the detriment of the overall franchise. 14's approach is far more wholistic and well rounded.
But, a fair criticism of 14 is to say: it does heavily lean upon it's story. So, if you are like me and dislike the story: it is a large hurdle to weigh.

  13. Just a reminder, story in 14 is like an interactive to the environment of the game, it’s still a theme wise with some ff lores.

The word “Immersive” and “role playing” are the two key factors for THIS game success. Without story, you just loose both side of what making an MMORPG. It’s relevant to what the game was announced and I believed that how the design philosophy was (and they changed it time to time too, because of reputation).

The answer is quite simple, why you don’t just add the lore directly to game instead of an out sort? Do you think the game should be more compelling or be more competitive?

As for wow, the game wasn’t introduced you to be immersed into the adventure but rather becoming a part of a massive multiplayer community. That is the technically the whole design philosophy across western all games. You are there to play the game that you pay for, not about enjoying or spend time with it. That leading to where creativity are formed, and the devs take that as a way to get attraction to new players, not the current or return players.

Outside of traditional RPG, I don’t think there are many companies would sacrifice money and time just to build a strong standalone game rather than meet the demand or trending stop (there was a golden rule about mmo formula back in the day too). But aside from that, the less resources, the more optimization is required.

  14. The fact there are so many different content creators, in so many different areas of the game focusing on different things, shows that story is not the only thing to enjoy in XIV. The game has something to suit everyone's tastes and preferences… the story is what binds it all together. Sure you can enjoy just raids… yes you can just run dungeons but the story is what 'usually' provides context and background to why the dungeon/boss/trial is there

  15. Hey I don't mean to be negative here but I have to ask:
Why do you guys have like 6 channels? – I get really confused on what is what and what's the difference between ginger prime and Work to game or Gaming Kinda or GamingkindaWorktoPodcast, Or Other channels you have I haven't discovered yet. – As a fan of your FFXIV chats feel like all of these channels have almost the exact same content as far as I can tell (Not that it is BAD at All! – I lOVE hearing you guys talk FFXIV – Been listening for over a year or so now.)

But sometimes it is quite literally the exact same content with you even mentioning that you already did this video on another channel. It's got to the poiunt here i feel compelled to ask what is the reasoning for overlapping your content so much? As a frequent viewer, admittedly it gets really hard to tell if I've already watched a video or if I watched this or that particular video on another channel, Etc etc. —

If It's simply a "That's how we make our money for a living" – I get it. But I cannot be alone when I say that it's getting a little confusing and misleading. especially lately with several videos on each channel. — Would you guys ever consider consolidating them all somewhere? or making a channel specifically to house all your content? – that would be super awesome.

    – Much love. keep up the hard work. Love your FFXIV convos & sorry for the criticism. I only do so because I care.

  16. It does have a awesome story, but i wouldn't say only for that.

Mabye there is a peice or a bunch of content that draws folks to prioritize that.

Or perchance its the connection between players in their many interactions in this game.

  17. Without the story, Ishguard restoration wouldn't exist, the weapon series, the story trials, eden raids, Bozja wouldn't exist, the twinning (the dungeon everyone loves) they all wouldn't exist, your attachment doesn't exist all the content would be grey blobs, its because of the story we get these good environments the boss designs which lead into their mechanics and arena….all because story, you rip out the story, the game doesn't exist as it is

  18. Why play a game if the story isn't important to you?

That's how I got hooked on Overwatch. Granted they kind of dropped the ball on story after a while, but still.

  19. Hi FF14 players, need some insight.
I heard the game has a lot of nonsensical and inconsequential side quests, is this true?

I'm coming from ESO which every quests is fully voiced and tell interesting stories relating to the events taking place in the regions, which all add to the world building of Tamriel. So I would love to know people's experience with the questing in FF14's world. Do side quests offer any meaningful insight on FF14s lore or are most of them just menial tasks?

Also I would like to just add questing features ESO has that i really enjoy and am wondering if FF14 has it too. I really want to give ff14 a try so any info would greatly help.

    – In ESO you can choose to start in any region/zone to start questing in, expansions included. No region/zone is level locked and everything scales to your level. Therefor making every region of Tamriel incredibly relevant to every player, new or veteran no matter the activity.

    – There are also a lot of Skill tree quest lines and dailies that lead you or encourage you to explore the map more, and they too provide stories and lore.

    – Another Feature i enjoy in ESO is that there are recurring characters. Characters that you've met in the base game's main story, side quests, and dungeons, who you get to meet again and they are part of story lines in the new expansions. They remember you and your past adventures/encounters with them. You also get to see how the times have passed based on their dialog and appearance.

There's a lot more that i really enjoy about it but these ones are the features that I'm hoping ff14 has versions of in some way.
Lastly pardon my bad English haha.

  20. I'm late to this discussion but the problem is that FFXIV's from the moment you get into the game to the end (and slightly beyond the cap) is story. There is no open world questing that you can level and have an actual experience like "Classic/Vanilla" WoW and just freely go about questing and getting better gear without intervention of a story. Final Fantasy locks you in on a straight path without letting you have those thoughts of getting a super rare item while leveling, or going off the path to find to do other challenges.

The journey is not what you make it on this game but what SQUARE ENIX makes it. You can still find enjoyment in what you're doing but it's not going to be at the level of an MMO that allows more freedom. I feel to get around this problem, square is one day going to have to bite the bullet and add some features that will allow people to experience a more MMO style of content to level off or enjoy or perhaps even start bringing back some classic ideas for end-game.

I don't mean taking out what works but adding to what we have. Now these are just ideas in my head but i do think adding a layer of "Horizontal/Explorative" Experiences could be interesting. Bring in the "Sand-park" idea as an alternative way of playing.

  21. One thing that rubs me the wrong way with a lot of people in the community is that they have a tendency to oversell the story to the point where they act as though it is somehow objectively good and anybody who just pays attention to the story will end up liking it. That's not true. People can play through the whole game without skipping a single word of dialogue and come out at the end of patch 5.55 and say "I really didn't enjoy the game's story overall". That's a perfectly valid opinion to hold, but it feels as though a lot of people can't seem to accept that.

There is no such thing as objective quality when we are talking about subjective enjoyment of a narrative.
