  1. For me part of the reason pvp is fun is because it's "bad". It takes a lot of the pressure off and keeps the toxic try hards away. I use to be big into pvp in BC WoW and what took me out of it was all the people forgetting that it's just a game. I do believe pvp does need more attention, as periodically adding new modes and abandoning them is awkward, but as it stands I'm having a great time.

  2. the Feast has been surprisingly fun for me. I started in Season 18 with low expectations and had an absolute BLAST learning it, even making it into the T100 on my very first season!

  3. No surprise that the pvp community is awesome. The whole FFXIV community is awesome… But that is probably helped by the fact that pvp has been so neglected. I wish wish wish we had a growing community of pvp'ers that ran out with pvp turned on a lot. I'm brand new so I'm just learning

  4. I have not tried PvP yet, and honestly, I will never try, no matter how good it is. I'm just the kind of player that vastly prefer PvE content in whatever game I play. Even on fighting games I usually prefer games with a solid Trial/Story mode over a balanced Versus mode.

  5. Very glad to see you engage in pvp content. I've been encouraging people especially wow players coming over to play it and give feedback. I tell them the FFXIV team is more receptive to feedback and they are trying to improve pvp. I tell people they can't very well improve this aspect if not enough people engage in the content and give their ideas for improvement. The worst aspect of pvp imo is the long que times because there is lacking engagement with it.

  6. It's a shame it is neglected. It is another aspect that could add to FFXIV MMO domination. They should have a space for all types of players and the ball is dropped here. Unfortunately I don't see them investing the resources it needs into it anytime soon. Maybe with the recent surge of players (myself included) they may have more future resources. PVP is good endgame content and I'm interested. It will take more of the community to bullhorn it. And I see a lot of the community say it as a lost cause so they ignore it when they should be saying, "Hey this isn't up to snuff so please work on it."

  7. Incoming mega long blog post: I grinded PvP quite a bit in Stormblood to get the Garo collab gear and achievements. I don't know if PvP has changed significantly since then.

IMO the biggest problem with XIV's PvP is the poor reward structure. Pursuing rewards is what gets people into PvP and keeps them playing. No rewards = no players. Rival Wings is so dead because it has no daily challenge like Frontlines and isn't in the frontlines map rotation.

There is simply not enough stuff to buy with Wolf Marks. Even just PvPing casually doing your daily frontlines challenge, you can easily buy everything you want in just a few weeks. Once you've got everything you want, Wolf Marks are effectively worthless. Only a single Wolf Mark gear set was added in all of Shadowbringers. Other expansions had at least two.

The only other rewards for Frontlines/Rival Wings are achievement-based, usually getting 100 wins on a specific mode. Dedicated players farm these achievements in the first month, and then the queues die out again. Rival Wings gets no action outside of organized discord groups, and only one Frontlines map is available per day. Even if you can manage a decent winrate and get several matches a day, you can still easily expect these achievements to take months if not years. All the while you are getting nothing but worthless Wolf Marks with nothing to buy.

The Feast is the worst of all. No matter how much time you dedicate to the Feast, no matter how hard you work, if you don't make Top 100 then you effectively get nothing, and then those rewards are gone forever. Even if you make it to Diamond tier, you don't even get enough Wolf Collars to buy a single weapon. It is absolutely insane that an entire game mode effectively has no rewards for players who don't make Top 100, AND those rewards are season-exclusive.

Imagine how stupid it would be if only the first 100 players to clear an Ultimate could get the weapons and titles, and then everyone else got nothing. It's not any easier to clear afterwards, you've just removed any incentive to try. "Better luck next Ultimate", which will have different rewards that you might not even want. All for the sake of giving 100 players per DC, <0.1% of the population, something to show off. Getting Top 100 is challenging regardless of which Season you do it in, so why do the rewards have to be motivated by FOMO instead of just accomplishing something difficult?

Rewards that are unobtainable can't motivate anyone. If I'm new to the game and I really want the Shadowstalker armour set, it doesn't matter if I'm the best PvP player in the entire world. It doesn't matter if I'm willing to grind PvP all day every day. I can never get that set because it was gone before I even had a chance to try. There are some Feast rewards in this game that I've never even seen in 6 years of playing. So much work making mounts and armour sets that are forever locked away to 100 characters per DC, never to be seen again.

I think it's fine to have rewards for being one of the best players in a season. But they should not be the ONLY rewards, and crucially, those rewards should NOT be time limited. If I sweat and push myself in the Feast for weeks and weeks, and end up coming 101st, I get NOTHING, and the reward I tried so hard to get is gone FOREVER. No wonder so few people bother with this dumbass mode.

As far as gameplay stuff goes, I dunno if it's changed since Stormblood but healers are absolute BS overpowered in FF14 PvP. The reasons that Zepla says she loves being a healer (feeling unkillable) is exactly why everyone else hates them. So much of your success in PvP hinges on the healers. If your healer goes down before theirs, that's it. You're at the complete mercy of the enemy no matter how good you are. Why can I go 1v1 against any other job, but if I want to kill a healer I need to coordinate CC and burst with 2 other people? In a team of 4, the healer represents like 50% of the team's value, MINIMUM. If your healer is bad, no amount of skill from the other 3 players can make up for it.

Also Feast being 4v4 makes job balance a really huge factor, since only 1 job of each role can be represented in a team. Players have huge individual responsibility and even just one weak link in your team is enough to guarantee utter defeat. No one wants to get queued into a team that's already 100% hopeless because 1 player is just a little worse than average.

Like this video says, PvP just doesn't get the attention it needs for it to be a major part of the game. Poor dev communication, poor moderation, lacking content, lacking rewards. How can you try to implement a serious ranked competitive mode in the game with rewards that are both time AND number limited, and not even police for cheaters?

  8. The only way to attract more people is fix how the ranking system works, they shown of a great ranking system in the Ishgardian Restoration, where each severs has a ranking for per class, and with top 100 is achievable even to top 12, plus each season the ranking gets reset which makes everyone on the same starting baseline. With the way the PVP eg feast seasonal reset only just pushes them down a rank for those whom played it in the previous seasons which make a clear advantage to them in a long run, which is a clear disregarding those who want to even try.

  9. I should give you some context as to why FF14 pvp is so bad. FF14 pvp is very VERY different from the way it was. Pvp use to have all the pve abilities use to be a materia system behind it as well. All of this was a really really bad idea people were using raid gear for advantage.(This carried on for several years and is where the rep of it being bad started) Then came the pvp revamp long afterwards where abilities were crunched down into new skills this refining was needed sadly isn't even set in stone. If you pvp in FF14 long enough you may find that the system will be uprooted and revamp constantly which for some is a big plus however keep in mind pvp now compared to before is a WAY different game. As pvp stands now it requires way more communication, rewards, moderation, and proper matchmaking to make it even close to a great pvp experience. This is not to say that its bad its just still got a long way to go. Heres hoping with a lot of the WOW pvp community coming over pvp can get the attention it needs.

  10. I love Rival Wings and made it to Platinum in 2 Feast Seasons.
PvP can be a lot of fun, but damn is it inaktive.
The one kind of funny thing is, if you ask people why PvP is supposed to be bad and you don't get an answer.

  11. Any moment when instead of working on old content that dosent work they try to put new one istead is a bad game design, its sounds like Blizzard kind of idea "Sir they dont like 4v4 and nobody plays Rival Wings, what do we do" "We ignore them and make new pvp mode that will be ignored" Everyone claps in awe.

  12. back in the day, in HW, i really loved to play frontlines, together with friends. it were those days of noct ASTs being very op – you could run in circles in midst of enemy team, constantly applying shields on yourself, and whole team (sometimes even) wasnt able to do anything to you. i was one of such AST players and it was really fun

  13. Having pvp'ed in both JP and EU servers, I can say that EU's pvp scene is more pvp-lite than JP's scene. Every match in JP is sweaty and intense while EU is more laidback and chaotic at times, not to mention the playstyles are very different. Its how you have casual pvp game modes in FPS games and then the bit more sweatier/hardcore modes like Rank etc. Hence why I go to two different server for two different experiences.

  14. I've done a few Frontlines recently as PLD. I am pretty new to the game, and have never pvp'd in an mmo, but I manage to do more damage than most of the healers, so maybe I'm not doing too bad?

  15. 1:35 and that is why I love tank. Taking on the roooooom! 😀 EDIT: Square could do some really interesting and diverse stuff with pvp since it's not tied to pve. With that brain ache of a balancing mess out the way oooh the possibilities for some straight up fun game modes. Future Cop L.A.P.D (this game was pure fire) multiplayer but in FF14 for example.
