  1. I could never get into FF11 in it's heyday because there was no way for me to pay for it (and my parents never gave up their credit cards). I got it during a sale a couple of years ago and played for about 3 months and… I had more fun trying to figure out what was going on rather than with the game itself, like an archeologist dusting off a caveman's toy. Still I was bummed when the remake got canned.

I mmo-hop a lot but settled on XIV, GW2 is pretty neat too, I finally got into it after trying like 3 separate times.

  2. Here’s the thing – when FF14 1.0 was released, they were trying to make it almost like an FF11-2. But it flopped. And was considered horrible. Why? Because of lots of changes in the genre in the more than 10 years that elapsed between the 2 games. I never really played FF11. I have it installed on my computer, sure (trial version from about 5 or so years ago) but never understood how to play the game, and tried it at a time when it was practically dead anyway. So I don’t have much of a lens to look through for it. But I do know that when it came out, MMOs were much more giant multiplayer sandbox games than they are today. Sure, they still have the sandbox element, but just play much differently. What a better question than which one is better is “Which game is more influential”. And for that, we go with EverQuest, then WoW. EverQuest pretty much made the MMO genre, and WoW made it what it is today. But FF11 and FF14 took what EverQuest and WoW did and did it better. Eventually. When FF11 came out, it took a bit to surpass EverQuest, and when FF14 came out, it took a few years to surpass WoW.

  3. The best thing about XI is that SE introduced the Ninja as a DPS job, and players turned it into an awesome tank. More player agency in XI made it more exciting, less bland. XI had a lot of problems, but you always had multiple ways to "solve" a problem… But it had a lot of other problems… Yeah..

  4. I love your videos but wanted to comment a disheartening experience I had on your Twitch stream today. I was in your stream for the first time today. Figured I'd try to chat with you guys. I said 6 different things at 6 different times and was not acknowledged once. And I know you must have seen what I typed because you commented on stuff people posted just before or just after me. It just felt like a huge let down because you guys seem so down to earth. I'm left wondering if you only interact with subscribers and whether I should even bother watching your stream anymore.

  6. Its not just Activision. Most multi dollar companies pay structure is completely messed up. The fact some CEO, no matter the company, can make a multi million dollar bonus as the line level workers barley make enough to get by is just wrong.

  7. I've played at least 8 MMO's over the last 15 years… Here's how I rank the ones I've played:
    ESO=GW2 > EVE > WOW > FF14 > BDO > SWTOR > ArcAge… I've never played FFXI

However, I completely agree with "Context"!
FF14's crafting is the single best I've experienced. It also hosts the second best housing system I've experienced. And being able to have every class on one character is simply unparalleled.
WoW hosts the single best Dungeons and Raids I've ever experienced.
I enjoy and adore GW2's combat system the most. And I put it first in esthetic's and quality of life.
I enjoy ESO's gear system and lore the most. And I prefer it's housing.
I enjoy EVE's PVP and Economy the most of any MMO.

Every game has it's strength and weakness. And it is dam near impossible to just say "X game is better then Y game".
However, I can rank how much "I" enjoyed similar systems across multiple IP's. And No, I don't play them all at the same time. I usually spend several months or years in one, then move to another. When I've hit the attention span limit on my current subscription game, I will just bounce to another one. I achieved AOTC in WoW last month, this month I resubbed to ESO.

I personally did not enjoy 14's MSQ, the length of it's combat rotations, nor it's specific art aesthetic. So 14 ranks lower for me as an individual player than other titles. However, their are many players I know which put it #1. We each have differing tastes and we each put emphasis on different aspects of game design. For me today, I find ESO and GW2 are tied for my personal #1 choice in MMO with EVE right behind. If you had asked me in 2007, I would have said WoW was the best. If you had asked me during the ArcAge Alpha test, I would have told you AA was the best MMO (which is comical today).

Yes this question is entirely colored by a spectrum of IP system design, and the field of available games during the year in question. Context is everything.

  8. FF11 is great but questing system and menus are horribles. That ui needs to be fixed. Constantly needing to have a guide is not good. The classes and the gear is flat out better then FF14. WoW retail is meh but WoW classic as great rpg systems and a pleasant journey. Yeah I like it more then FF14 as well. Guild Wars 2… It's kind a joke of a game sorry. But the pvp is better FF14.

FF14 doesn't live up to the legacy of FF11 or the franchise. Classes too basic, it has horrible server input. Gear is generic as hell, overworld is about as useless as needed, it's just there to pretty much that story and crafting is not needed to play the game let's be honest.

FF14 has what I call the BDO syndrome. We know it sucks but it's good looking so people play it cause people like to cherry pick on looks.

And hey 4th coming… What they doing for inventory? Oh yeah removing belt to free up 20 inventory slots, give me a break it's a meme at this point.

  9. XI had it's positives but a lot of negatives also.

I hopped on to XIV thinking it was going to be XI but better.

XI made crafting pretty essential. There were several times where I needed a crafter to make me gear. I love how the devs made gear with hidden stats. Who does that????

  10. The reason i like 11 than 14 , is freedom. Freedom to play as i like and not follow a meta rotation. Play as a combo job i like and not a meta job as in 14 . The feeling of exploration and danger not present on 14 .

  11. You can't have a shared subscription until XI is on console. Because you can't have one player platform have a superior subscription to another. And I doubt XI will be on console.

  12. Key words I heard. Starving for content, Wanting New Rides. Mmos will not advance much until internet size and speed increases and is more affordable. Larger seamless worlds, massive multiplayer content aka not talking 64-200 players. I mean 1000s at once.

    Back to key words.

Starving for content. Many say they don't have lots of time to invest because of family and jobs, but many of these people are already 100s of hours or years invested into all the mmos supposedly dubbed casual. Devs hear this and try to make the game accessible or dumbed down or easier to progress or with things such as highly scripted but repeatable content like dungeons or fates or raids. And systems for grouping easier. But when something becomes too accessible the community aspect becomes an option and not a need.

Wanting new rides. Obviously an mmo cannot release new impactful content every 3-6 months unless the content is similar to previous content or content is stripped down to smaller portions. Do I want one brand new ride or 50 rides like the old one? Each ride will appeal more to different users. XIV is a themepark with more rides but many of those rides are the same due to the rule and scripted nature. FFXI is a larger themepark with fewer rides in the themepark. But those rides are rather different from the previous and have subtle nuances due to the non scripted nature and lack of rules. In 14 I walk in the park and there are 1000s of people standing in line for the multiples of rides all in a condensed area.

In FFXI I walk into the new continent with a roller coaster every 200 miles and not many lines. The gods of this world don't care if I have a three kids, a wife, and a 50hr job at home. Or if I can find someone to ride the coaster with me. It is up to me to go alone or find friends to discover more of the world. There are no signpost. If you are one of those who can't find friends or prefer to solo. This world is a cold and inhospitable place. As for me. This is the one for me. It's that unscripted I don't give a damn about how pleasant it is to you vibe that I enjoy. I am not masochist either lol. I want to experience worlds without a sign getting rammed down my throat telling me the path. Maybe one day I own dynamis without getting touched in a party of 18. A month later, a weak link or a random O.o happens and that dynamis is hell on earth.

  13. Honestly, I don’t think any of the games are better than the other. It falls into a matter of opinion basted on the experience of the player. I played wow for a bit while deployed to Iraq in 2010. I couldn’t really get into the game. That doesn’t mean the game was bad. Where as I was hooked on ffxiv after a couple days of playing and I’ve played consistently for the passed 2 years. It doesn’t make the game better, it just means that I personally enjoyed it more.

  14. Final Fantasy XI has some of my most favorite experiences in an MMORPG ever.. I still get goosebumps thinking about the first time I made my way to Jueno, the first foray into Ru'Aun Gardens or that jaw dropping experience when you first entered Lufaise Meadows. Even simple things like the first time you flew in an airship or took a boat felt so epic. The closest WOW ever came to replicating that kind of experience for me was stepping through the portal in TBC… and that was a pale comparison to the many epic moments FFXI had. FFXIV is the closest in terms of giving amazing experiences since FFXI in my opinion, and the big one that comes to mind is that amazing reveal in Shadowbringers… it's been a while since my jaw was so thoroughly planted on my desk.

  15. I have to side with Chris on this one. However! I would argue that FF11 and FF14 are different to the point of not being comparable. FF11 was a product of its time and, back then, it was a solid MMO. But technology, content, and player expectations have changed to the point where I think it would not be fair to compare these two games.

To give an extreme example, I think this is akin to comparing the NES Legend of Zelda with Breath for the Wild and asking which one is the better game… it's just not fair.

  16. I greatly preferred old school FFXI to pretty much any MMO I ever played. It's the only MMO I've ever played that has delivered on the promise of a "second life" you can lead in a virtual world. It was modeled on MUDs, which were themselves modeled on tabletop roleplaying games like D&D. It was a pain in the ass at times, but that adversity helped build lasting relationships which to me is what online games are all about.

  17. This is kinda my feeling.

Tried it a few months ago (for the first time) and I can totally see the appeal/potential…but all the early guides were basically "Here's how you get your initial Trust, now you can go and do dungeons and level and such with your NPCs"

I can see FF11 being better AT ITS PRIME in some ways – one of FFXIV's biggest weaknesses is its "open world", and a second is its lack of character flexibility/customization (mechanically, not appearance) – but AS OF TODAY, FFXIV is probably the better gaming experience.

If they ever did a remake or a modern MMORPG that worked like that, I'd probably get into it. If there was some kind of pass thing where I could pay $15/month and get a FFXIV and FF11 sub, I'd consider playing it, but…as of now, FFXIV.

    .

WoW and GW2 are VERY different games. I fell out of love with WoW when Warlords came out. Mists was really my last expansion. I did come back for Legion – the expansion I was waiting for ever since the end of Burning Crusade – but at the end of it, that kind of served as a good end for my character's story. I just wasn't into BfA and it's the first expansion I didn't even buy. Likewise Shadowlands. I like the story enough I'll watch the cutscenes, but there's so little story vs how much you have to play, fetch quests that don't contribute to the story, grinding rep, etc that I'd rather just watch the high notes on YouTube at this point. FFXIV is just more fun for me to play.

GW2, on the other hand, has no trinity functionally – I love playing a healer/healing people and hate being a main role DPS, just dealing damage is boring as hell to me (yes yes, high end play, but if I can't access those mechanics until 2 expansions and 70 levels into the game, it doesn't exist to me since I'm never going to play it that long!) – and is an action RPG, which in general I don't like unless it's a gunslinger game like Remnant: From the Ashes or an action RPG like Kingdom Hearts where you have button presses for attacks, which GW2 does not have. I know some people love those kinds of games, and latency prevents something like Kingdom Hearts 2/3 being made in an MMO form, but if I'm going to play an action RPG, I prefer KH/Crisis Core style games better than weird hybrids like GW2.

…some people love GW2, and I do love the open world, though it feels kinda dead (the leveling areas seem to have no purpose to the modern game/story), and so on.

It's just a very different type of game that some people like – I'm not one of them – and isn't really comparable to WoW or FFXIV/11.

  18. 11:10 – Truer words have rarely been spoken!

    "We're HUNGRY for content!"

And not just due to Covid delays, but also people being at around the 1 year anniversary for when we started locking down, it's spring heading into summer so people have time to play, and all the existing MMOs have some dearth of content. Everyone I know that games is kind of in this mode of waiting for the next big thing.

I'm kind of up to date (mostly) in FFXIV to my liking (have at least one Job of each of the 5 roles at max level and my mains are up to date in gear), I finally was done with WoW at the end of Legion and haven't looked back, I've dabbled with GW2 and LOTRO and STO and even finally tried FF11's free trial kinda meh on them all, I'm playing Star Citizen, following Pantheon and Ashes of Creation and…

…yeah, HUNGRY for content is right.

  19. Both are great and very different.
If you like quick, quick, quick and having ya hand held then XIV.
If you like PVE, true adventure then it’s XI allllllllllll day!
XIV PVE is a bit poor and totally lost a true RPG feel. It’s MSQ, instanced and Hunts and that’s it. Where’s the exploring a dungeon on your own, camping an NM, massively diff abilities per class. I mean XIV a dps is a dps period.
Dangerous places to explore is fun!

  20. For me personally, XI will always be the best. I have just over a decade of XI, and about 6 years of XIV under my belt.

To me, XIV just seems so goal empty. By that I mean… nothing means anything for very long. You spend a patch (3-4 months or so) fully upgrading your entire gearset… and then it is useless and needing to be replaced again. Your ARR gear, HW, SB etc all just sits in the glamour chest.

Not to mention the fact that after getting into the groove of XIV.. it just becomes boring (imo). Log in, do roulettes, do turn ins, log off. Repeat until tomes are capped, then forget the game exists. Nothing really to keep me hooked. Which is why I decided to quit.

FFXI, on the other hand.. even after playing since 2004, dropping off in 2014, and coming back in 2021.. there is still so much to do. Things you could never do in the past without an alliance full of high end players is now very accessible, sometimes soloable!

Even with how much XI has changed, it's still my favorite gaming experience of my life overall. Nothing will ever bring the same feelings of literally being lost in this gigantic world, and literally having to forge friendships and join up with a party to get things done. Going with your buddies into a dangerous dungeon where 1 wrong move could mean death for everyone.

Is XI still that itself? No. Is XI perfect? Not at all. My collection of useless relics being overshadowed by much easier to make empys will speak for themselves lol. But even being what it is, the good times and the bad… XI just is the best.

It's just my personal taste, and opinion.. but for my sub fee, it's FFXI. Absolutely NO contest at all.

  21. 11 is still the better MMO. Way more depth. The quality of life changes since 2009 has done wonders. If it had updated graphics and perhaps a UI of sorts, I could play it for life. 14 is stale and we get less and less each expac. Classes have no identity, they all play the same.

  22. I know this is old but the tech is there. I would argue the MMO genre just isnt willing to innovate due to costs or starting production years ago and being in dev hell. Tech has come so far in the past 15 years since WoW launched that the MMO genre's lack of innovation is entirely on them.

If ff11 was updated in graphics, thats what i would be playing…even though i do currently play it, haha.

  27. IDK FFXIV has taken a lot from other MMOs (WoW/GW2). FFXI did things on its own right as did most classic MMOs. FFXIV, in my opinion, is a little to generic thus i never really got into it after the 1st expansion and have not touched it since. I agree that FFXI is the better feeling MMORPG while FFXIV is the superior RPG game "with online mechanics" due too FFXIV relying on duty finder wayyy to much. Feels more like a hub-based game with a story-line honestly.

  28. 11 was a way harder game then 14. In 11 if you walked around the wrong area you were simply just dead. 11 was also more detailed in ever way leveling up your own skills. I remember when I was leveling up in 11 I had to join a party and fight mobs that were 3 or 4 levels above our party just to level up and it was important to chain link kills. Right now 14 plays as a single player game which sort of turns me off. There is alot of story that I have to get through just to do end game content. I miss having to party to level on basic monsters that grind is amazing right now they give u dungeons but it's all force fed.
