I Was Completely Wrong About This In FFXIV…

(Episode 2)

I have made errors in my assessments but this one I have never quite understood. I made a point to pick on the Warriors of Darkness but I never truly knew the extent of their journey… I made a mistake.

  1. to be fair, this isn't Alisaie's Red Mage Reveal. That doesn't actually happen until into Stormblood proper. For now, she's actually just using Gladiator animations.

  2. The only time we've heard Ilberd so far was back in ARR, when the entire voice cast was different. I guarantee you if anyone you last met in ARR were to show up you would have no idea.

  3. The first half of Stormblood is gonna be rough, its infamously slow paced, but man it is SO worth it by the end; especially since it has some of the best Trials and Raids in the entire game TO THIS DAY and leads into the masterpiece that is Shadowbringers

  4. The Warriors of Darkness are the perfect example of the Sympathetic Villains that FF14 is so good at; that they are the hero of their story, and you are the antagonist in their eyes, just as they are the antagonist in your story. They were also the first ones that really grabbed my attention (a huge reason is the voice acting for the Warrior of Darkness: Ardbert, performed by Joe Dempsie – who played Gendry in Game of Thrones: the blacksmith's apprentice who ends up on the run with Arya).

The thing that really stuck with me about the Warriors of Darkness is the fact that they were just normal adventurers helping out wherever and however they could, and then they got elevated to a position they never asked for, and played the hand they were delt the best they could… and the really important detail that lends an edge of "real life" wisdom to their story: sometimes you can do everything right, and still fail.

But as good as the Warriors of Darkness are, I'll agree with the majority of the community, and say that the best sympathetic villain is still yet to come. Definitely looking forward to your impressions of Stormblood, which as I'm sure you have heard is very devisive within the the community.

  5. As mild spoilers, just literally vague inclinations which will more hype you up than really tell you any one concrete spoiler… plot beats in 14 are fantastic. Why? Because usually they have some resolution. And those that dont…well they've inspired enough faith in me by now that I believe they will have good resolutions.
I think it was Jessie Cox who talked about the difference between wow and ff14 storytelling. A snake tail was seen in some promotional material for Wrath if memory serves. Jessie asked the WoW devs about it. In a more eloquent way, the devs responded, "psh, I dunno."
In 14, if that same snake tail showed up, we'd get a full on backstory, character arc, and at least one epic fight out of it.
Even the most lackluster element will bloom into something incredible. That is the faith 14 has instilled in its players. I also stress that 14 establishes rules, and you can actually figure things out before they happen sometimes based on the crumbs they throw your way.

  6. The patch quests between expansions do a good job of planting story seeds & giving you a preview of new plot-NPCs for future expansions. You wont see this payoff until Shadowbringers, but some other NPCs will be join you for Stormblood soon. 😀

  7. The Warriors of Darkness really shifted how I viewed Light and Dark in this game after hearing about the fate of their world.
They were simply Heroes who got punished for doing the right thing, trying to redeem themselves. You gotta love storytelling like that!

  8. One thing I didn't like about the Warriors of Darkness is how they really sell the "sadistic agents of chaos" shtick at first, complete with evil grins and bragging about how they almost got Alisaie killed…but then you find out they're actually desperate good guys.

  9. to be fair, i don't think most players ever predicted that the warriors of darkness' story would be as deep as it was. that twist got me too! and how it pays off later is nothing short of amazing. i love all the twists and strands the story takes and how well they end up weaving together into the bigger picture, it's fantastic! it's been so fun watching your videos and re-experiencing the story again.

  10. There aren't different world. There is ONE world and it was ruined by Hydaelyn by being ripped apart, including all life on it, distorting both brutally.

The fragmenst are not dying, bleeding out, in utter disbalance, what is the reason that Ardbert and Co manages to let the First explode in "Light", while doing pretty much nothing. It's not really them, it's the distorted world on its own, just like the 13th was ruined by being way too far to "Darkness" (what overall does not really mean the same, since they just made up some not really working nonsense withi Light = stillstand (so pretty much Cold), Darkness = movement (so pretty much warmth)).

Ardbert, being around as stupid and braindead as the player wold, but just just as much, simply followed the next quest that was about saving the first he had ruined (and also the 13th) by trying to reunite it with the source (so planet fragment 0), what is what the Ascians are doing since thousands of years, slowly healing the world by reuniting its soul(s) – what is also the main reason why the player WoL is more powerful than those before, so overall 100% needed for the story to work out like that.

One can argue, that this will course a lot of death, but the thing is: the distortion of live causes death on all fragments all the time, so… it does not really make any difference beside improving the situation.

And never forget: not only did Hydaelyn/Venat genocide the whole planet for zero reason at all – plan B was to just run away and let ALL shards and the source die.

And guess what: the game just tells you that this is fine and the good side…

Just as it tells you that Eorzans are the good guys, you know, the fanatic, egomanically oligarchs, who can't even try to form an actual working nation and are solely united by warmongering, while the guy who wants to unite Eorza as a working nation and getting rid of the primal problem (= being which could easily kill the whole planet by just brainwashing everyone and absorbing all aether), is of course the bad guy.

Whole game is like a warpropaganda movie since SB.

It tells you that war is awesome, that you should throw your live away for some oligarchs to get more wealth and power, that you should never ask questions or try to understand what you are actually doing, that you are always on the good side, no matter how many warcrimes you commit and that the other side is always bad, wrong and evil, no matter their arguments.

    The game is simply disgusting.
