Worst one is DT
I think this should say specifically MSQ in the title. There’s so much more to an expansion than the MSQ. If you asked me how I would rate the Heavensward MSQ than I would it’s really good but if asked me to rate the rest of the expansion, I’d definitely give it a lower rating. It’s opposite for Stormblood. So many people talk shit about the story, but the rest of the expansion was great with its content. Introduction of ultimates, 4 different eureka zones, and the introduction of the glamour dresser? Top tier. The MSQ does not define the expansion. This is gonna be the same for Dawntrail. Some people straight out hate the story, but the content itself outside of strictly the story telling is so good so far.
wuk lamat looks like shit and her English voice is insufferable. if they are going to make a new character get most of the screen time, don’t make them ugly, uncanny looking, and don’t give them an insufferable voice.
a naruto like personality isn’t ideal either, at least have them get humbled like alphinaud,
Story wise, Dawntrail was slow until Heritage Found but the leveling dungeons in Dawntrail was S+ IMHO being coming from an S tier floor tank😅
Geez louise, am I the only player who actually thought the Scions were gone for good right up until Emet-Selch made it possible to Healer LB3 them???
I give Dawntrail a 3.5/10 with ARR being the next lowest at 6 and the rest are up from there. In the previous expansions seen as stumbles, the problems were because they tried something new that just didn't or couldn't work. Like having two writers write each half of the Stormblood MSQ, causing character development for some characters (cough, Lyse). Dawntrail was poor quality. The writing, pacing, characterization, and overall formula were like a bad fanfic. Trying new authors is perfectly fine but they had a QA process through a writing and editorial team that let this turd through. This was a conscious choice so I can't cut it any slack. Some good ideas, a lot of bad execution.
S: Shadowbringers
A: Heavensward, Stormblood
B: Endwalker
C: Dawntrail, A Realm Reborn
No way DT is that high or better than ARR, its so laughably bad it should rank outside the box
In hindsight some will say, "you knew the scions wouldn't really die in Ultima Thule", but personally I didn't feel that way going through it. Considering it was slated to be the end of an arc I didn't feel as though their deaths were off the table. To me it had the intended effect. I really didn't know if they'd be coming back, though I was attached to them enough that I wanted them back. These people were important to me and seeing them sacrifice themselves was hard. No amount of argument about the probability of such an occurrence can take that away from me. By the time it was G'raha's turn to sac himself I could feel the tears welling up. These people were friends and family, and they were being stripped away one after another, and there was nothing I could do about it but keep going forward. That they do manage to be returned does nothing to take away from their willingness to die so that everyone else could live.
I just want to learn about the other shards, hoepfully they will get to some other interesting ones with lovely locales to enjoy the sights of.
If I'd judge only .0 MSQ content my personal rating would be:
EW 10/10
ShB 10/10
HW 8.5/10
SB 7/10
DT 5.5/10
ARR 3/10
The only part I really dislike is ARR. Dawntrail was actually more enjoyable for the first half imo, the second half was pretty convoluted.
Stormblood had a similar problem, the part in Doma was great, Alamigo not so much.
The rest are absolutely amazing, HW suffers a bit from the older quest standards and quite a bit of boring downtime.
ShB and EW are almost perfect, my favorite stories in gaming period. By itself ShB is the strongest expansion no contest. Builds up a whole new world and the best antagonist in the franchise in just one arc. EW builds upon all previous setup and delivers a satisfying end which is sadly pretty rare nowadays.
I'm part of the few people who were fed up with Zenos on my first playthrough. Looking back on it, my reaction of "I had enough of you, it ends here!" was not the one I would go for now. Neither is the "That I cannot deny!" option. I did not want to give Zenos anything else than disappointment. Seeing him disappointed that I didn't confirm or deny his claim of me and just that I wanted to deal with him because he is a threat is more in line with how I now personally feel for him as a character.
I personally feel my rankings are…
S: Shadowbringers
A: Endwalker, Heavensward
B: Dawntrail
C: Stormblood
D: A Realm Reborn
I really don't feel like DT is as bad as StB. Wuk is more tolerable than Lyse, with the sole expection being the very ending. DT's last trial when Wuk breaks through is pretty much the only most egregious point of the story. The first half of DT was mediocre imo but the second half saved it.
I mostly agree with your rankings but I would swap DT and ARR there, as the very first "expansion" and with all the context of the 1.0 disaster, I could see reason for it being slow paced and a little weird and I'm fine with it, DT on the other hand was a hard pill to swallow, because trying new methods of story telling is one thing, but serving straight up poor writing after 2 bangers of an expansion felt really bad, combat is carrying DT hard for me
ShB > HW> SB > EW > ARR > DT (story only).
