  1. In beginning of game there is two important quest lines you might want to follow. First is msq (main scenario quests) and second is your class quests. Both are suggested for you in UI's left upper corner. Class quest is written with smaller font below msq quest. To open botanist class (or any other class) you need to do lvl.10 class quest for your starting class which is Archer. Currently you have archer lvl.5 quest "Matter of Perspective" and after finishing it you will get lvl.10 quest. Happy gaming! ^.^

  2. At the TOP LEFT, where the Main Scenario Quest is, under it will be the next CLASS Quest, if you have one to do. Up till level 50, you get one Quest every 5 levels. They give you Equipement and Skills.

When starting a New Character, you can only unlock other CLASSES when you finish the level 10 CLASS Quest for the CLASS you started with.

  3. I think you have to go up.

So the level 5 class/job quest has you shoot targets inside city, go back to guildmaster. Then go to North Shroud to kill 2 enemy mobs. Go back and finish by speaking to guildmaster.

Level 10 quest will have you shoot targets outside of the city, like the prior quest go back to M'iqote archer. Then go to Eastern Shroud to kill 2 types of enemy mobs. Go back to your M'iqote archer to complete quest.

Once completed, you can now learn other jobs/classes.

Class/job quest occur every 5 levels in A Realm Reborn; try to complete them as they appear. At lvl 15, you start getting skills. At level 30, you get a new master for your job.

  4. The requirement to get another class isn’t just your level, it’s that you’ve completed the class quests associated with your first class (Archer for you). You get access to another quest every 5 levels, and they must be done to unlock all your abilities.

  5. You need to do the archer quests located at the archers guild. Every couple of levels you go up, a new archer quest becomes available and you have to do these quests to unlock new abilities and features. One of them being able to change class.

  6. is confusing at first, your archer level is separate from your class/job level quest progression go to archer guild and do job level quest 5 and then 10, then the npc at the guild will let you know that you can now go to other guilds…thus new job/class

right now, you are lv 16 archer, means you can do lv5 archer quest, >lv10 &>lv15….when you become 30 you will have lv 20 lv 25 and lv 30 job quest available in the guild,….and thus with any other job you pick.

  7. When people talk about the MSQ, you are correct that they meant the Main Scenario Quest, and it's good that you noticed that of your own! If something confuses you in the game or in the comments, please ask. People will be more than happy to clarify.

The MSQ is the game's storyline. Almost everything in the game is related to it. Almost all dungeons are related directly to the storyline, and very few can be unlocked otherwise. The same goes for other types of content such as trials (those are basically one big boss fight), raids, the Gold Saucer, etc. Almost everything in the game has story progression requirements. If you have played FF7, then you should be familiar with the Gold Saucer. If you don't know, it's basically a casino-like area with a lot of minigames, chocobo racing, a card game, and other stuff like that. And even unlocking that requires MSQ progression. Riding your own chocobo and other mounts requires to reach a certain point in the story. I could go on and on and on. It's for that reason that the MSQ is generally the main thing to focus on. Expansion areas and maps related to them CANNOT be reached without completing the story, either. Even some jobs (dark knight, astrologian, machinist) require to reach the first expansion to unlock! (Thankfully, from the second expansion onwards, they started requiring specific levels to unlock new jobs.)

That said, feel free to take your time. Don't feel rushed by us. If you want to take it slow, or explore types of content not related to the main story, then by all means do that. I just think it's important to clarify that the vast majority of features are related to progressing the story, as it's a rather unique part of FFXIV in comparison to other MMORPGs. I know that everything is new for you right now and you get a lot of information about a lot of different things and it can be overwhelming, so please take things at your pace and enjoy yourself above all.

tl;dr The Main Story Questline is the big focus because almost every feature in the game is related to it.

  8. As if there weren't already enough things to try to track… You have your actual level, your class quest level, and your MSQ level (all of which can be different) But that number you looked at on the Character screen is also important.. It's your Item level, which is an indication of how good your gear is… your gear you have to have a high enough level to use a piece of gear and the item level is (sort of) unrelated but is also important because some quests and dungeons require this level to be a certain level for you to do them. (it will be a while before you have to worry about this number again.)

The thing that is confusing you with the Botanist though is that you still haven't finished your level 5 class quest. You should finish that one, and you will be able to do the level 10 class quest. Once you do that one, you can do the botanist quest. You should also be able to do your level 15 class quest as well. It's important to do your class quests because some skills are locked behind these quests.

One nice thing about FFXIV… Fall damage won't kill you — unless you are being attacked. You'll be left with at least 1 XP unless some creature is attacking you. Just be aware that you're going to just have 1 XP when you land… if you fall among hostile creatures that are close enough to your level to attack, they could possibly kill you before you have the chance to recover.

Novice Network is just another place where you can get information… but it tends to be very chatty. (It's not a guild… What you call guilds in WoW are Free Companies — or FCs — in FFXIV).

  9. What may help is take note in that pop up window when you pick up a new quest, there is a level in a little black circle. For instance the first few msq quests you did today were "lvl 10" that is the minimum level you need to start the quest but it's also referred to as the quest's level. You need to do your level 10 archer (class/job) quest before you can become a botanist as well.

  10. In the top left of your screen, the one that shows your current "Main Scenario Quest", if you see underneath it, you have the quest "A Matter of Perspective" (it is also in your quest journal). Important quests to your class/job that are not part of the 'MSQ' will show up when they are available there. Job/class quests are generally available every 5 levels, and they need to be done in order, so the NPC was wanting you to complete the level 10 Archer quest before they will let you become a Botanist!
MSQ quests also can have a level attached to them (if you look in the quest journal). That's an easy way to roughly remember where you are in the story (the level)

  11. So at the end, the "novice network" is really just chat for new people and has some experienced people in there as well (mentors) to help the new people. You can just ask questions there if you want to.

  12. As others have said, at the top left you'll see "Current Main Scenario Quest." That tells you what quest you're on in the Main Scenario Questline (MSQ).

Underneath your current MSQ quest, that is the most current quest you can do for your job (in WoW terms, your class). You still haven't done your Level 5 Archer quest.

Once you complete your Level 5 Archer quest, your Archer is high enough level to unlock your Level 10 Archer quest. You'll unlock new Archer quests every 5 levels in A Realm Reborn.

Doing the Level 10 Archer quest will unlock the ability to learn different jobs and professions (Botanist being one of them).😁

  13. Your level and your quest level is different. If you haven't completed your job/class quests through level 10 you are unable to pick up any other classes/jobs. By checking up in that top left corner, you can see what your next MSQ quest is and what class quest needs to be completed. The MSQ is in the tan box and the job quest is in the little print below it. 🙂
