This is a short guide on catching The Ruby Dragon in FFXIV. Considered one of the hardest, rarest, fish in the game – this sucker isn’t all that technically challenging, it’s just a rare bite off a mooch loop of a slippery, somewhat uncommon big fish. Yea, easy.

🐍Prep Part 1:
It’s highly recommended to get 10 Angler’s Art stacks before starting your Ku’er prep. Do this by using Patience II to catch ANYTHING you can with Precision and Powerful Hookset (for ! and !! bites respectively) These stacks will allow you to use Makeshift Bait on the first Ku’er you catch off the mooch.
Once you’ve got 9-10 Angler’s Art stacks catch a Coeurl Eel Snake, a longer !! bite. Use Surface Slap, Chum, and Prize Catch once you’ve caught one. Do NOT DO ANYTHING until you Midnight passes in the Ruby Sea. That’s when we start Ruby Dragon Prep Part 2!
📋Large-Size Ku’er Prep (Prep Part 2!):
Starting at midnight Eorzea time, it’s time to catch a Large-Size Ku’er. Cast out to the Ruby Price and only attempt to hook !!! bites. This is Ku’er bites. Since we are using Prize Catch, as long as we don’t catch anything else until the Ku’er, the Ku’er will be Large-Sized. You can use Chum to speed up this process! Since we prepped the Angler’s Art stacks, we won’t be spending GP on Patience, meaning instead of spending 550 GP on that, we can use it on Chum instead!
Ku’er can get away, but this won’t remove the Surface Slap or Prize catch, so just keep chumming and casting until one stays on the line. When this happens, DO NOT DO ANYTHING until 4AM Eorzean Time when the Ruby Dragon window opens.
🐉Catching Ruby Dragon:
At 4am, Mooch the Ku’er you caught earlier in Prep*. Ku’er will bite into either another Ku’er or The Ruby Dragon. Your first mooch will do one of four things:
If your first Ku’er Mooch is unsuccessful and it gets away, repeat the prep steps of catching a Coeurl Eel Snake, slapping it, and then using Prize Catch. Your priority should be on getting Slap and Prize Catch up. Any GP you will have left over will go to Chum.
If your first Ku’er Mooch is successful and it’s LARGE-SIZED, just use Mooch I and start this section over again.
If your first Ku’er Mooch is successful, AND it’s average-sized, AND you have 5 Angler Art stacks, use Makeshift Bait BEFORE using Mooch II. Once Makeshift Bait is active, use Mooch II and repeat catching !!! bites and mooching.
If your first bite is over 25s, congratulations it’s Ruby Dragon. Use Hook to catch it. If it sticks, you’re done. If not, start over.
Continue to mooch Ku’er until you either catch Ruby Dragon or the window closes, or your Ku’er gets away. If the Ku’er gets away at any point, start over with the Couerl Eel Snake Prep.
🎣Other Notes
– If you run out of Angler’s Art Stacks, you can use Patience II. Coeurl Eel Snake, Ku’er, and Ruby Dragon all require Powerful Hookset to catch. Please see my previous guide on how to do that: https://youtu.be/F3bz7LG4AlQ
– Ruby is a rare and difficult fish to catch. It can only take 1 mooch, or 50. It’s very variable! Don’t get discouraged!
– Cordials are EXTREMELY ENCOURAGED. Seriously, don’t leave home without them.
– Expect to need approximately 60-75 Blue Bobbits per window.
Good luck and happy fishing!

Thanks for the great guides, Fruity! I caught The Ruby Dragon this very evening and got my Grandmaster Caster title. Happy fishing =)
❤
Thanks for the updated guide Fruity! I've yet to catch the Ruby after many months, but I'll keep at it!
Thanks 😀
this sucker made me wake up at 3:24am in the morning multiple times, i'm glad it's over
Not using Patience during the Ruby window in order to be able to Chum is certain to be a much less frustrating process, but as someone who got his Dragon off of a chain that spanned almost a full Patience II and 2 Makeshift Baits, I don't think I'll ever be able to get used to it.
ez video for ez fish thanks fruity
