Fish: The Ruby Dragon
Location: The Ruby Sea
Hole: The Ruby Price
Bait: Blue Bobbit (Mooch)
Conditions: 04-08, Thunder to Clouds
Folklore Book: Othard
Min Gathering: 1,300

Before starting anything, use Patience II to get 10 Angler’s Art Stacks somewhere in the Ruby Sea well before midnight. I’d recommend around 9pm Eorzea Time.

📋(Ku’er) Window Prep
Once you have 10 Angler’s Art Stacks, cast out into the Ruby Price with Blue Bobbit. Reel in any !! bite until you get a Couerl Eel Snake. Once you catch one, use Surface Slap, Prize Catch, and Chum.

You can use Ambitious Lure but it’s not needed at this part.

🎣Catching Ku’ers
Once midnight passes, cast out and use Ambitious Lure (ALure) 3x or until you see “You have a feeling the next cast will be a large-sized fish” and ONLY ATTEMPT TO HOOK !!! BITES. Once you get a !!! bite, this will be Ku’er. Use Spareful Hand and then repeat the prep steps from before:

1. Catch a Coeurl Eel Snake, Surface Slap it.
2. Use Prize Catch
3. Use Chum
4. Cast out, use Ambitious Lure up to 3x
5. Hook only !!! bites, use Spareful Hand on catch
6. Return to Step 1.

You’ll repeat this until you (ideally) have 3 Ku’ers stored as swimbait (and one prepped with Mooch), but the ultimate goal of the 0-4 Ku’er window is to get as many Ku’er stored as possible. GP management is IMPORTANT here. You shouldn’t use Angler’s Art stacks too much (we’ll need that for the Ruby window), and you should always have enough GP to use Spareful Hand.

The skill usage priority is:
Spareful Hand/Prize Catch
Surface Slap
Ambitious Lure
Chum (not chumming is OK!!!!)

🎣Catching Ruby Dragon
Once 4am passes, use Prize Catch, set a stored Ku’er as your swimbait* and cast out. When mooching a Ku’er it’ll either be a another Ku’er (sub 25s bite) or it’ll be Ruby Dragon (25s+ bite). Use Hook to catch whatever bites.

If it’s a large-sized Ku’er (the first one will be if you used Prize Catch) Mooch it.
If it’s an average-sized Ku’er, and Makeshift Bait IS NOT active, use Makeshift Bait then use Mooch II.
If it’s an average-sized Ku’er and Makeshift Bait IS active, use Mooch II.

Repeat mooching Ku’er until the chain breaks for whatever reason. Once it’s broken, set your next stored Ku’er as your swimbait and cast back out repeating the above.

*If you have a Mooch’d ku’er in storage, just mooch it then follow these steps.

Keep using all the stored Ku’er you have until they run out. Once they do, return back up to the steps in “Catching Ku’er” – immediately mooching any Ku’er you get.

Any bite over 25s off a Ku’er Mooch is Ruby Dragon. While Ruby isn’t slippery, it CAN SLIP. It’s not a guaranteed catch once it bites – as with all fish in FFXIV.

🩆 BONUS NOTES!
– GP Management at Lv.100 is much more important compared to the Lv.80 or Lv.90 methods, as there is much more active skill usage.
– Ambitious Lure attracts powerful Hookset fish, so if it’s not a Ku’er that bites, it’ll be Glass Herring. Early estimates put Ku’er bite chance with 3x Ambitious Lure stacks at near 45%.
– Seriously, GP management is important now for this fish.
– Ruby Dragon is considered one of the longest fish to go for – potentially taking many months worth of windows to catch.

Good luck and happy fishing!

  1. This is so unfair! I had to catch Ruby Dragon without all these extra abilities. It's catering to casuals and is a SLAP IN THE FACE to HARDCORE FISHERS! I will be boycotting re-catching Ruby Dragon and I encourage all the REAL fishers to do the same. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go empty the can I have duct-taped to my head that catches my brain juices leaking out.

  2. Took me 9 months to catch this goddamn fish before Dawntrail came out. The scar shall never heal. These sprouts nowadays don't know the true terror of losing the Ku'er you prepped on the first mooch.

if anyone did it without( lvl100 skill) and had to fight for ruby or other fish but came out succesful these skills wont take away the joy, the relief and the memory you have of catching that "elusive fish" back then but now its unfair others can? , mind you even with the skills cathing ruby aint easy .
