How to Catch Thavnairian Calamari in FFXIV

Used in Patch 6.1 CUL recipes, Calamari Ripieni and Kalamarakia Tiganita, Thavnairian Calamari is a straight forward catch in – you guessed it – Thavnair. Catchable (easily!) with both Mackerel Strips and Versatile Lure, you’d be wasting gil if you weren’t fishing this up yourself.

🦑 Catching Calamari
Arrive at the Perfumed Tides with Mackerel Strips or Versatile lure if on a budget. (See one of my Purple Scrip farming guides below for getting Mackerel Strips!). Cast out. Thavnairian Calamari is a !! bite, between ~7-10s on a macro timer. It’s recommended (strongly) to reel in at 10s on the timer, if you have not gotten a !! bite. You can do this by simply using Hook.

If you are using Versatile Lure, cancel cast at 12s, instead of 10s.

Once you catch a Calamari, and GP permitting, use Identical Cast and then Double or Triple Hook to catch 2 and 3 more Calamari, respectively.

  1. I have the folklore book, have the new gather gear pentamelded, used both baits and patience, patience II, snagging and without and I cannot catch this fish. Suggestions?

  2. You might wish to add something in the description: in my experience, this fish is almost always a near-instant biter. Any bite that takes longer than 5 seconds will invariably be the Narunnairian Octopus.

Also, I'd personally advise against using Identical Cast since it costs a lot of CP. Instead, once you've narrowed down the exact biting time of this fish, focus on using Double Hook.
