How to catch Aapoak in FFXIV

A short guide on Aapoak, a rare common-tier fish worth over 1,300 White Scrip with just a small 690 collectability (though, that may change come Endwalker).

You can arrive early to the window and pre-catch a HQ Ancient Shrimp to mooch once the window opens. It’s a rare bite, but it’s not completely required – it’s just good practice. *MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COLLECTORS GLOVE ON*

Once the window opens, either mooch your Ancient Shrimp or use Patience II and cast out. We’ll cover why Patience II is highly, highly recommended later. Ancient Shrimp (a ! bite) mooches into Aapoak rarely (a !!! bite). Under Patience, Ancient Shrimp requires Precision Hookset to catch. Once you get a !!! bite, use Powerful Hookset to catch Aapoak. Again, it bites rarely, so it may take a few windows to catch.

❓Why use Patience II?
Patience II is similar to Patience I in that it greatly increases the chance of a HQ fishing being caught (70%, compared to Patience I’s 50%). However, it is different from Patience I in that Patience II will also increase the size of the fish you catch, meaning that you’ll catch larger fish, and with larger fish, you get a higher collectability rating, and with a higher collectability rating you get more scrip.

Despite what the description of Patience II says, it *does not increase the chance of catching big fish!* It only increases the physical size of any fish caught!
