In the 2nd episode of a multi-episode series, Quazii discusses fall and rise of Final Fantasy XIV in China – specifically how a fat chocobo campaign went horribly wrong.

Wow they bombed so hard, how could you ruin something so foolproof
After the shit they pulled, how were Shanda not revoked of their licence for FFXIV?
Madness.
It would seem to me that many these issues were not Square Enix issues directly but all issues made by the local Chinese publisher itself. Square Enix is maybe having to try and clean up after all the complaints about the local publisher and in trying to protect their reputation. I don’t know how it’s done today or if the same. Regardless, many lessons to be learned depending on the local market for a game launch and post launch management.
I hope you'll do an episode on the KFC chocobo. That was.. something..
Can't wait for episode 3.
Shanda is known to putting strain on its Korean game studio subsidiaries into maximizing profits for their f2p games.
So, water is wet.
Bet winnie the pooh saw it as a personal attack.
It does like like their president tho
Releasing in china is a pain in the ass.
Wait till you hear about some south koreans got butt hurt over a costume on mogstation because of "Taisho era". They tried to cancel the costume on global version, lmao. Imagine learning history so to not repeat history but instead all they learned was bearing grudges.
Well since this is a multi-episode series, I hope some viewers could understand that this isn't the whole picture. Yes, the fat chocobo thing was a huge mistake, no one's gonna deny that. But do not ignore the fact that most games on the Chinese market work that way. And the game kept losing money until almost the start of 4.0. Before that, the local 14 team had to rely on other profiting teams to keep the game running. Say anything you like about Shengqu Games, the local publisher, but most other companies would not have kept the game that kept burning money for so long. Yoshi-P said himself that he would never switch to another publisher in China.
Who would've guessed the Fat Chocobo almost killed FFXIV in China lol thats crazy its understandable though i mean $140 for the Fat Chocobo mount is a bit much i love that mount dont get me wrong but thats expensive the Iceheart Emote was more thats still a lot though..
A truly original series that not every content creator could produce, thanks quazii!
I have a hard time feeling bad for the Chinese consumer getting shafted at any point in time while watching media and art being changed from developers the world over due to Chinese censorship. During which, they shamelessly plagiarize said media for their own crappy purposes – which is setup as propaganda for the party. Cry me a river China, just try not to dump caustic chemicals and Uyghur bodies in it.
Side stories time also EP2!
1. Diffrent Billing Method
Due to some historical reasons, time-paid MMOs in China usually provide seconds-paid method and no more payment for each expansion. Chinese version of FFXIV followed too, and added monthly-paid method later.
Though we need not buy any new expansion, but the props in webstore are a bit more expensive than other region. For example, the mount Cruise Chaser is 228 RMB(about $36) while it is $30 for global version. And the price of subscriptions is about 100 RMB($16) for 167 hours or 88 RMB($14) for a month.
Seconds-paid and free for expansion caused a huge queueing trouble at each patch uploading, especially for ShB. 2000+ queue is too long? No, it is naive. What I've experienced most is 5000+. Someone said he got even 8000+ in front of him.
2. An Experimental Area?
The patch 2.4 for Chinese version is a little different form global. Including leveling roulette, the level synchronization in lv.15-49 dungeons was cancelled. And if the level difference is more than 11, the lower one will get no exp. from monsters in dungeon.
Why? I have to point out that level synchronization got a lot of criticism during early time. The major was decreasing of the amount and power for skills. This led many players to just quit when they randomly attended the dungeons that boring or difficult for them, or avoid roulette.
Despite for the mixed views for the change, most of us thought it a radical experiment and joked the Chinese DCs were selected for the experimental area because here were almost depopulated lands.
This experiment seemed failed. Some time after the patch uploaded, the low-level players would just stand at the entrance for dungeons, waiting for the high-level players to clean the monsters in most cases. If there were no higher ones, they might vote for giving up. Afterwards, level synchronization was back in HWD. But I think it did some benefits for unsynchronization today.
Nowadays, there‘re still some unique systems for Chinese version run well. And we sometimes joke the global version as the experimental area, because three months slower than global version usually led us a more stable and improved patch.
3. Another Fat Chocobo Event
About two years ago, they began a crossover event with KFC. You can get the mount Black Fat Chocobo if you buy a designated KFC bucket, which was a 100 RMB($16) package for 3-4 people.
Since we can get a mount after finish it, we call it as 'The Trial of Black Fat Chicken'. If someone wanna challenge it by himself, it will upgrade to 'The Trial of Black Fat Chicken(Extreme)', and get the title 'Food Bucket of Light(光之饭桶)'. For explain, 'food bucket(饭桶)' means a person eat more but good for nothing else in Chinese.
We did amounts of memes for this, maybe Quazii will show you in future episode.
CHY_NAH
WAs this the kfc extreme where peoepl set upo realk life pt to eat chicken
5:06 Hey, where are you looking?!? 😀
So theres actual legit gamers in china? my only experience with chinese in games is them being gold farmers
Holy shit!!!
They took out the FC from the collector's edition?!?
The hell is wrong with them!!🤬🤬🤬🤬
Since it's already been said, the expensive mount and outfit strategies are very common in other somestic MMOs, Such as JX3, Moonlight Blade, Nishui Han and some other Wuxia fantasy games in China. These company strategies are the reason that makes more and more players to FFXIV.
EDIT: almost all the Wuxia games in China are heavy field pvp, which means u may walk on the street of fields and suddenly someone flyover and u r killed by no reason. the game mode is also one of the reasons that many players don't like the games (myself included, a JX3 refugee)
Irony. I play FF Brave Exvius and the kind of thing the publisher did is EXACTLY the same shit SE's Creative Business Unit 4 (Yoshi-P runs Unit 3) pulls on a regular basis. Events and systems modified to be less generous or dropped outright. Even when gifts are given to both sides instead of a lump sum like JP gets, Global has to login in for weeks. Sometimes you can pay real money to make up some of the difference sometimes you can't. I understand mobile gachas are predatory in nature but comparing the Global version of Brave Exvius to the Japanese is enough to make me wish that everyone in charge at CBU4 is put on the damn bread line.
its china, I don't think any country should be doing business with them period
