  2. Playfriends, what would you do to heal the sick? To help the helpless? Today, we learn the price of healing those in need. This is your spoiler free lore comment.

0:45 – Woohoo! Durmin is going to be Ruling over Cards once again. Astrologian is notable for, in addition to healing, buffing party members and dealing pretty good AoE damage. The buffs are where the reputation for complexity come in. These traits also extend to PvP mode, where it's primary utility are buffs and AoE damage, with healing seeming like almost a parlor trick.

1:30 – TWO DWARVES DOING DWARF THINGS!

7:30 – Sophrosyne is the ancient Greek virtue of excellence in character and soundness of mind. This is typically expressed as "Temperance". Apparently, Plato thought sophrosyne to be the highest of the virtues, particularly when it came to moderation in drinking alcohol. Giott is an excellent choice to go up against Sophrosyne.

9:00 – Gaaaasp, a helm-less Dwarf! This might be a little awkward for Durmin.

13:10 – When you're playing the same Job as Urianger, things tend to rub off on you. There's no reason to be concerned until Dan starts using "must need".

14:40 – Yes, this is a White Mage's "Raise" spell and sound effect.

15:30 – Well, now this is the earliest we've seen of Ardbert and Friends. Since it's just Adbert and Friend!

23:15 – And thus, did Durmin consume his first alcoholic drink since that little incident at Falcon's Nest and the Ishgard/Dravanian Armistice celebration.

34:15 – This spell is Earthly Star, a fun AoE spell that Astrologians have. The large area is indicated by the golden sparkles that are its perimeter. You can either activate its effects early, or wait until it fully charges and activates automatically. This is the Astrologian's "bomb", which fills the area with constellations and stardust, while healing all allies within it and damaging all enemies. It's very visual effects heavy.

35:40 – This looks to also be fairly early in the group's timeline. This is before Nyelbert or their Galdjent friend joined the team. And, of course, Lamitt still has her helm. But Cylva is still here. Maybe she didn't survive their later trials?

36:27 – Yxtlilton seems to be a version of the Aztec god of medicine and healing, Ixtlilton.

37:30 – This is a Doom effect that is removed when healed to full. This is the same mechanic that healers had to deal with when facing off against TG Cid in the Ivalice Alliance Raids, although that required healing a fully 8 player group.

41:15 – The Hobson count is at 1!

46:30 – Notably, a Dwarven Decking is also a drink! The Dwarves working at Watts Anvil built their own distillery and that's one of the drinks they serve.

49:00 – What would you do to save your family? Leave your home? Undertake a dangerous quest? Break your laws to cure them? How about forsake your entire cultural identity? Lamitt has chosen to be a healer, even if it means no longer being a dwarf. And for it, she is a Warrior of Light.

    52:25 – That certainly isn't ominous at all…

52:40 – The Hobson count is at 2!

    55:00Dear God

56:35 – She saved them. She cured them. And they followed her into exile in solidarity. Which meant they weren't safe in Tomra when the Flood of Light came. A horrible end to those who deserved better in life and deserved better in death.

1:00:30 – You do have Repose on your hotbars, right? RIGHT? That healer role spell that you only usually cast during job quests? Right? On keyboards, the hotkey P usually brings up the Actions and Traits menu, so you'd better find that spell quickly.

1:01:31 – Interestingly, Giott uses Warrior's Fell Cleave here. It looks appropriate with an axe (spinning blades and what not), but it kinda looks weird with a hammer. Of course, some of the Warrior axes are hammers, and Giott's hammer design is one you can obtain.

1:04:20 – I know a lot of streamers who have given Giott a stereotypical fantasy dwarf accent. You'd think after Nael van Darnus and Lamitt here, they'd have realized that Giott is never referred to with gendered third person pronouns. She's not our drunk dwarf uncle! She's our Ale Aunt!

Next time: The Power of Love. The Power of Hate.

  3. This one was neat. I think I prefer the others but Giott certainly steals the show, there'll never be a dull moment with her around. Also as Dan pointed out it's neat to see the WoD gear improve to showcase time passing, and it's always appreciated to see more angles of their character. I wonder if after all the years of isolation Ardbert figured it out.

  4. As a mathematician in real life, I can't allow that "thousand thousand foes" to pass without comment. If you averaged one foe every five minutes, fighting ten hours a day, 365 days a year (and an extra day every fourth year), it would take almost 23 years to get through a million (22 years, 9 months, 3 weeks, and a few days, depending on when in the year you started). And, while you might be able to get through more foes than 12 in an hour, even that many seems excessive for a long-term average.

On the other hand, while it's implausibly high, it's not crazily so, which is what usually happens when writers start throwing around large numbers for effect (well, that, or they're laughably low for things that genuinely do involve large numbers). I guess I'll give a grudging B grade for mathematical accuracy on this one.

On the gripping hand, of course, people generally throw out convenient round numbers rather than striving for mathematical precision, so it's still good writing (particularly considering that the actual number could plausibly be in the vicinity of a hundred thousand, so a little exaggeration for emphasis would cover it).

  5. Healer's probably my favorite of the four. I've mained paladin since I started, so I naturally did the tank one first, and while I did enjoy it, Giott is just….such a fun character. And this one breaks the mold slightly.

  6. 1:09 Now you've done it… now someone's gonna bite it.
1:25 What's the helmet got to do with it?
2:11 I'm slightly disappointed he wasn't critical of the lack of beard.
6:50 I mean, after the thrashing he took, Giott probably has a concussion.
7:37 A dwarf with no beard!? Dwarves. Have. Beards.
9:03 Nevermind that, she didn't have a beard. No, I will not shut up about this.
9:20 I blame the lack of beard. Must've been an early sign.
13:37 A fox friend led me to believe that glasses are versatile.
15:19 Wait… don't tell me the beards are part of the helmet…
17:00 Dwarves. Have. Beards. All of them. Beards.
28:46 Yes, yes I am. Those were books you spilled mead on. I like both of those things, but you spilled mead on the book! That's not how those mix.
42:28 Why no stout? Stouts are good thinking beers.
43:04 Well… my equivalent list looks very different.
49:20 …the beards a part of the helmets. I am greatly disappointed. None of them have actual beards.
57:32 The fact that I can almost hear #1 in Kurisu's voice amuses me greatly. I"m trying to think of a character that the line works for. Also, verbal sparring is great between friends.
57:54 Your beard is a lie!
1:01:56 I just realised his name is "Giott the Aleforged". Good name.

  7. – LMAO i love that is not being a Cardinal Virtue, nor reanimating Sin Eaters, but Fashion Crimes that got the bounty on Lammit
    – as a wise Fox Friend once said: Glasses are very Versatile…
    – Durmin speaking like Urianger, that's indeed poggereth
    – i love Giott already they're such a riot
    – oh, ok this quest takes place after Vauthry, so no Meol
    – is interesting that even the lesser Sin Eaters retain just enough self they can recognize each other
    – so… all Dwarven beards are fake in The First? because if so then yall got nothing to be proud off

  8. For those who don't know, the Cardinal Virtues are references to the Four Heavenly Virtues or Four Cardinal Virtues found in European philosophy and Christian ethics and iconography, just like most of the aesthetic of the sin eaters! They're often seen as the counterparts to the Seven Deadly Sins, to the point that there's occasionally seven of them to better balance the Seven Deadly Sins, but more often it's just the Four Virtues.
The Four Cardinal Virtues are Courage/Fortitude, Justice, Temperance, & Prudence. Sophrosyne is the Greek word used for Temperance, which means moderation, self-discipline, self-restraint, and conscientiousness

  9. After all this, it took a while- thankfully provided by 5.1 – 5.3- for Yujo to not neck a Fantasia and become an Elezan out of sheer embassment for the awful behavior of her fellow Dwarfs.

  10. Gotta say, one thing I like a lot about the Role Quests in ShB is that they give you so MUCH of who Ardbert's companions were. How they joined him, how they fought, small fights along the path that they took to becoming the Warriors of Light for the First. The duties where you play as them can be mean (*glares at Tank quest*) but they're fun nevertheless.

Edit: And AGREED! The costuming, and which members are present can provide something of a timeline for how they met and so on. Like, now we know that Lamitt was apparently Ardbert's first travelling companion. Love it.

  11. Lali-ho! And welcome to my favorite role quest. Oh, Giott isn’t exactly a non-cliche character, but this quest is great and like the others, brings the feels when we learn what was up with lamitt and the truly unfair circumstances under which she was exiled. Like the others, she was a hero who did not deserve her fate. Here, see the folly of being too hidebound by tradition. A lesson our Giott learns by the end!

And a bit of a cliche reveal, too, but damn, it was great.

  12. Honestly, as someone who hates healing (being a controller player doesn’t help; thank god for Duty Support enabling my leveling!), this is easily my favorite of Shadowbringers’ rolequests. I went through on SCH bc I raised SMN’s level lmao. :>

EDIT: can’t believe I forgot, but Ardbert/Lammitt is a delight of a ship more ppl need to be on tbqh.

Also also…. God the pain of having removed the “useless” sleep spell only to need it here… how I survived using it straight from the actions list, I have no idea tbh.
