After a lifetime of playing consoles with a controller, took me months to get used to playing FF14 with a keyboard & mouse, but now it's second nature for me, everything feels natural, and also, button bloat is a thing & so I have no idea how people manage to play this game on a controller. But I use a mouse, not a touchpad. BIG difference.
The novice network is unfortunately not what its suppose to be. Many spoilers are discussed. You see more discussions unrelated to the game and its not a helpful chat at all like it was intended to be. And you are on Ultros which is known to have soooo many trolls.
I tried saying in chat, but playing MMOs is truly intended for keyboard and mouse. But you need a real mouse and a desk to use them on. A touchpad/trackpad like a laptop has is absolutely unusable. A controller is definitely better than that garbage. However, as the game gets more difficult you're going to hit the limitations of what the controller can do, and if you cause groups to die because you're not playing optimally you're going to get a bad reputation.
