  1. For those looking to get into the game now that the free trial has been expanded, I strongly recommend picking up Samurai AND Red Mage. They are very beginner friendly at lv50, and their complexity increases at a very comfortable pace. Their gear also tends to look pretty good! 🙂

  2. A slight addendum to blue mage. It isn't over powered, it is not balanced, and that is a very important distinction. Yes you can wipe out an entire add group with two casts. You also cannot tank to save your life. Why does that matter? Because you are expected to anyway. You have defensive abilities, but they are all on the global cool down. You've got a huge burst especially if you're willing to die, but you also have terrible sustained damage. Blue mage is very strong in some aspects and pitiful in others, even if it's supposed to do everything.

  3. Damnit… I'm already ADHD enough in this game and not even into Stormblood yet… stop making me want to add another whole sub-game to my list Durmin! As awesome as Blue Mage sounds.

  4. Question about RDM. Can you glam the orb separate from the sword, or are they linked? Every time I've seen RDM weapons come up in loot, that sadly I had to pass on since I didn't have the class on the FT, it looked like they were linked just from the photos. But I was hoping it was more like PLD's sword and shield where you could mix and match for maximum fashion potential.

  5. Thank you Dan! I, and presumably a lot of free trial players, just got access to these classes and this really helped me understand the core ideas of the two really cool classes that I really didn't get because I hadn't played them from lv30

  6. I would not recommend using BLU if you only have the free trial because trying to level or learn spells will leave you ragged; as many spells are in dungeons or trials and your chances of learning spells is higher in a party (up to 100%) relying on others to have formed a party in party finder for you to join instead of creating your own party finder is a nightmare, and the best way to level is to just have someone carry you (while not partied up) through a small area of monsters while you hit the monsters first with sardines.

  7. I switched over from Samurai once I got to 50 as a Dragoon (and did all their ARR job quests for that sweet, sexy Dragoon armor) and it's been one of my favorites ever since. I beat Ultima with it, I beat Thoridan and his backup dancers with it, and I plan to use it to beat everything else Eoriza throws at me.

  8. 1:04 Ah, my kind of class. Well, as close as we're getting, probably.
2:11 That gauge is 100% tsuba.
5:48 That sounds suuuper familiar. Not the same, mind you, but the Arsenal specialization for the Mercenary in SWTOR has a similar mechanic. You fire smaller 1.5/2s cast missiles to build target locks for a huge hit on your multimissile salvo. BUT, there's an ability called "unload", which does exactly what it says on the tin (you just hose a target with your dual blasters)… and one of the interactions is that… something can get a cooldown being straight dropped. I don't remember which, though. It's been the hottest of minutes since I played.

  9. What's stopping a Red Mage just… casting the quickest spell first before every other spell, interchanging between the quickest spell and the better spells of their arsenal? (I guess besides bosses being immune to certain elements.) Or is that how they expect you to play it~?

  10. I am stunned that Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia (try saying that 5 times fast) was able to translate the Red Mage pretty accurately to Alisaie's character build. I dig it!

  11. I do feel the need to point out that Shoha (the "even bigger attack" from filling up the 3 meditation diamonds)… isn't really that. It's an oGCD, one of the smaller hits you can do between regular attacks. it is a very strong oGCD, at 560 potency, but SAM has many more powerful attacks. Midare Setsugekka, the 3 Sen iajutsu, has a potency of 640, hissatsu: senei (another oGCD, that you can only use once every 2 minutes) has a potency of 860, and ogi nakimiri, a massive iajutsu-like attack you get once every 2 minutes, gives you 2 860 potency hits.

Last but not least, Higanbana, the 1 sen iajutsu, is actually the highest potency single button hit in SAM's arsenal. The initial damage is only 200 potency, but the DoT does a 900 potency over the course of 1 minute, for a total of 1100 potency from a single hit.

  12. As a career Red Mage, it's really not more complicated than shown there. Sure, there's buffs like Embolden and Magick Barrier which weren't mentioned, Manafication which instantly gives you 50/50 gauge every 2 minutes, and other things to consider such as when to time all that stuff, but unless you're doing EX primals or Savage raids, you really don't need to worry about party play. People will pop their DPS tools selfishly 99% of the time in normal content. This is totally fine. You also didn't mention the AoE options for either job, Dan, but I forgive you. Just know, dear players, if you do play FFXIV, read. your. tooltips. If a spell does 350 potency to one target, but there's an AoE that does 200* (and isn't reduced after the first target!), using it when there's two targets is a 50 potency gain. Also, Red Mage seems hypermobile but actually, they've got the least mobility in terms of dodging big boss mechanics because they have to hard-cast (as in with a cast time) every other spell. Black Mage gets two charges of 3 instant spells, Summoner regularly throws out two-thirds of their kit without cast times of any kind. Just be aware that your DPS becomes 0 when you die, so it's better to skip 2-3 spell casts to not die than to try to sneak them in and sit on the floor for a while.
