CORRECTION: Astrologian's Horoscope ability doesn't apply a regen! It's basically just storing a group heal on your party members which you can set off whenever you want (and optionally amplify with one of your other heal spells)
COUNTER-CORRECTION: All of the ability details for EVERY job are likely to change in future expansions as move sets are expanded and refined, so ALL of this video's info about specific moves will likely become outdated over time. But the Big Picture explanation for each job will remain more-or-less the same!
Machinist-main here, and something I really like about this job for hard content:
Having the simplest skills and the greatest freedom of moment means my goal is to look for opportunities to let others move less and hopefully not have as much to think about. Even when a job just deals damage, there's subtle ways to help the team as a whole. <3
I played hundreds of hours of Astrologian and I did not, until this video, know about the blue / pink border thing… I just memorized what each card does by name / icon…
I'll be over in that corner there, mourning the brain space I could've had for other things…
"Oops, all your party died while you were busy playing Solitaire" was very good.
Little Durmin using the flamethrower was a sight to behold.
I imagine he is going about his flamethrower buisnes as Hank Scorpio does in The Simpsons.
I REALLY hope one of those people who animatic people gets hold of some of the more iconic moments from this Jobs series. There's been some fun stuff. (I'd do it but visual art is NOT in my wheelhouse…)
Also, the Astrologians weapon type is CLEARLY a weird, fancy Duel Disk. They fight with cards, what else would it be?
Solitaire IS my weakneee
Corrections to Dans statements on Machinist from a Machinist main:
Dan presents, jokingly, that Machinist is a pretty simple and straight-forward job to play. Its not a hard job, but it is harder than he makes it seem.
Machinist has a reputation for being difficult to play since many people consider it incredibly dependent on the players Ping, as its windows for ability use can be tight if you want to play it at 100% efficiency. 98% efficiency? No problems, though.
Second correction; there are more abilities than Dan presents here that are central to Machinist's rotation. Machinist's "Wildfire", as presented here, actually makes a bigger boom dependent on the number of weapon skills used – doesnt matter what ones. And so, you get a skill called heat blast (That Dan doesnt show – he does show the AoE alternative Auto-Crossbow) that you can spam faster than anything else in your arsenal.
Why am i dwelling on this? Cause this means you basically cover a angry enemy in pitch, lob a sticky bomb at them, shoot them in the face with a bunch of fireballs and then have that bomb go off. Preferably all while having a Mecha you summoned from orbit apparently punch said enemy in the face.
Its part of the jobs Aesthetic. Its important to us.
Heavensward Jobs: "I heard you like pressing buttons."
– Dark Knight at max level has all sorts of buffs to get rolling and abilities to use as soon as possible at the start of fights, making their opener a grand button mashing experience (I assure you, it's quite satisfying).
– Astrologian once they get a few of their card abilities are very much playing two games at once (I play on controller and literally have my hotbar split so left hand is dealing with cards, right hand it doing the healer). Dan's very much captured the juggling act in his descriptions (I assure you, it's quite satisfying).
– Machinist, upon using Hypercharge, also has a single target weaponskill called Heat Blast which has a much shorter cooldown than their usual skills and also reduces the cooldown on two other abilities with each use – abilities which are off the global cooldown, so you can and should use them between shots of Heat Blast. It is a delightful 8 seconds of button mashing and watching enemy hp bars melt (I assure you, it's quite satisfying).
Hey ! Machinist aren't only about damage. We also have one single skill called Tactician that lets us reduce incoming damage by 10% for 15 seconds for the entire party. It's not flashy or anything, but it's not nothing. 🙂
I've mained Astrologian for over a year and never realised the border colours correspond to melee/caster cards and that there's a small icon for which phase the card gives 😂 I've just learned the cards mostly by heart XD
Thank you Dan for helping this derp be a better player!
DRK Job quests were definitely some of the best story in the game at the time. AST is the class I desparately want to play but I just cannot wrap my head (and hands) around healing. Was thinking about taking up the gun, but then GNB dropped and that took priority. And then they gave us RPR too, which I think of as DRK but DPS.
I picked up Astro while playing the HW patches, at the recommendation of a friend who also likes playing healers, and (after being hopelessly overwhelmed by the cards at first) it quickly became my favorite one 😀
Now I'm in Shadowbringers, I have some experience playing Paladin & Warrior, and I'm thinking about picking up Dark Knight for Reasons… I really love that you can try out and fall in love with so many different jobs in this game, without having to make new characters for them ^^
I appreciate these videos so much, I’ve watched guides on basically every job so I know what I wanna play when I finally get this darn game, but as soon as they start explaining the skills I’m just [smoothbrain vacant-staring and drooling.] This video was the first time dark knight and astro actually Clicked in my poor brain box. There’s a simplicity to the way you explain it that lays a much better groundwork than hearing the tool tip rattled off verbatim, and the focus on the flavor of the job gives me a much better idea of whether I’ll want to play it or not.
Dan’s videos are so good!! Also with such a calming and clear voice I could listen to him all day.
aahhhh dammed there is a card based character! Now I gotta play this game 😀
Where's my Collective Unconscious "never use this skill"?
that Astrologian sass must have come from hijinks that his main character suffered from
The Dark Knight and The Machinist are both movies. And they both star Christian Bale.
He also starred in a movie called Knight of Cups. Which is the name of a Tarot card. Kind of like an Astrologian would use.
I feel like I just solve a riddle…
Dark knight also has some of the best weapons for glam. Just saying.
