  1. It says something about a game when the "bad" expansion is still great and only gets that title due to the other expansions being a better with the main content, which is still pretty good. . The post-expansion raids and trials are better than the expansion before and after it. It has the first serious jumping puzzles (that I know about).
I really hope he attempts one of the jumping puzzles in an episode. They are super fun.

  2. Huh that's not what I expected Yda, or should I say Lyse, to look like!
She looks very determined to move forward. I do hope she keeps her silly side tho, that's what I love about her!

  3. You can't really talk about storm blood's problems in detail without spoilers, so for now, suffice it to say it's another quality jump, it has my favorite raid and second favorite trial series, a lot of the best optional content, and so much more. Is the story of the base gem shake for SB? In places, but it sticks the landing and I think that's what really matters.

  4. – i love that Tataru still planned to maybe give Nero an outfit as part of her revenge plan
    – well the plan of activting Omega to stop the overcharged Primal worked well enough for now
    – oh yeah I'm new to FF14 as i don't have patience for MMORPGs so seeing this has been a great ride
    – StormBlood being that divisive makes me look forward to it the most

  5. Thank you Dan, this has been a delight to watch. As a player that started shortly before Durmin's adventure began, it's good to see the threads he finds, knowing where some of them go, and uncovering them as I make my way (slowly) through Endwalker.

  6. This was such a great story to go through! I don't have time or had much interest to play this game, so I'm so happy that you upload this series!
I'm excited to find out what Stormblood has in store for us!

  7. I'm one of the people who hadn't played FFXIV at all before this whole series started. I've really enjoyed watching these, and I'm sure I'll love the rest of it!
I have a feeling that the more I wait before actually giving this game a good shot, the weirder it's going to feel XD Going into RR after watching someone go through Endwalker would be … very strange indeed, I feel.

  9. I haven't played FFXIV and am really enjoying this playthrough. I will miss the series during your intermission but enjoy the break. Looking forward to Stormblood.

  10. I think Stormblood is the weakest expansion, in the same way that Ringo is the weakest member of The Beatles: someone's gotta be on the bottom. Stormblood has some structural problems, but it's also incredibly thoughtful about war and rebellion, and the costs involved; I think it's also the place where the writing team works out their story's themes, which they use to devastating effect in the patch storyline. It's also where they start to pull away from the World of Warcraft combat model, and their fights start to get incredibly satisfying.

  11. Hello from the “handful” (of people who are experiencing this for the first time).

Full disclosure: I hate MMOs from a gameplay standpoint, and think they’re borderline problematic with the mechanisms they often tend to use to attract and keep players. If you enjoy them, all power to you, I don’t have anything against players, just strongly dislike the typical design of them.

That said, I’ve sat through the 100-ish hours or however many it’s been of this play through. I’ve even been tempted to try the game, though usually within five minutes it still does something very MMO-like and convinces me not to.

But say what you want about FFXIV, it does over-the-top, ridiculous anime spectacle better than any MMO has a right to, and better than many single player games that are specifically trying to do just that.

largely because i was RACING through the story until level 65, when I fianlly caught up to my roommate and coudl relax
but also because i'm remembering moments i DID catch, but had forgotten

  13. Absolutely appreciate this series. The story is great, but I played A Realm Reborn for a bit and the gameplay and tedium of all the bits you tend to cut out just did not make it feel worth the time. Looking forward to your Stormblood videos!

  14. Heavensward was a gem. In my opinion though, Stormblood's story doesn't quite measure up to the standards of HW. At times it can feel like it lacks focus and there are a few characters in particular that I just can't stand, narratively speaking and a couple story beats feel like they don't stick the landing as well as HW. The good parts of it are still really good, it just stumbles occasionally is all. Still far better than ARR, however, and I look forward to seeing Dan play through it nonetheless. Even so, it is one step closer to Shadowbringers, and there are some events near the end of Stormblood that really have me excited to delve into that one.

I agree largely with Dan. It's not the greatest, but I don't think that means its bad. If it were following up any other expansion in any other MMO, it'd be spectacular. It's an 8 among 9s and 10s.

  15. Hello! I'm one of those who's been using this series as a way to experience the story of this game for the first time, and I just wanted to take a moment to say how much I appreciate your presentation. Considering your selection of quests, coordination with other players (who also deserve a lot of credit for helping out), overviews of mechanics, editing techniques, and unique skills as someone who makes let's plays, this series has made for the ideal way for me to experience this game. Thanks for all your hard work!

  16. I do not see any improvement in their storytelling skills. Sure the events have become somewhat more dramatic and the presentation more polished, but they are basically just infodumping stuff to set the player up for the next encounter.

There was a time, when I entertained the idea of playing FF XIV (mostly fantasized to play with you, Dan), but if anything this playthrough convinced me not to play this game. Let's see how Stormblood will fare. I shall stick around – for science… and for Dan.
