The Void Ark arc commences
It's time for another Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts Friday Question: what final fantasy world would you like to see appear in Kingdom hearts 4 for future installments?
Just clicked, just heard "sky pirate" and I'm already excited.
I'm always amazed at how awesome and organized the DTC folks are. Thank you guys!
SKY PIRATE TIME!
Leofard: "I don't know too many other folk with one of them marvelous manacutters the ironworks dreamed up"
Me: "Ah yes, the manacutter. The mount I used exactly once and then switched back because of the obnoxious sound it makes when it flies. Yup, they sure are marvelous. Yup, yup…."
Diabolos also shows up in a Dungeon in ARR
The Lost City of Amdapor, the ruins of a 5th astral era city. You go there through the Conjurer guild leader who senses darkness or something, it has been a while
There isn't any lore to him, he's just a void being that uses gravity looking magics. The mechanic is a matching game you have to play to avoid his attack, which doesn't do as much to begin with
You get a tiny nod about him having survived the fight, everything else proceeds as normal
I, too, love when mounts have different terrestrial and airborne modes. The Regalia does this too, and it’s a delight when it flips to flying car mode. 😀
I don't know if anyone's said this yet, but I do really appreciate how you have your UI set up. I tend to keep my bars in roughly the same spots. Granted, I tend to have more of them because navigating menus is for chumps when you can just put a menu on a hotbar, but everything UI-wise frames the screen really well! So, good job with that!
I think Durmin would make a great Sky Pirate Roberts
The Void Ark is such an imposing structure I love it.
18:41 waves at self :3
As far as bones for Tactics fans are concerned, I have just been thrown a whole skeleton. I was doing Stormblood raids for those curious.
Playfriends, welcome to the new Heavesnward Alliance Raid series! Your spoiler free comment is here to point out references. Arrrrrre ya ready to set sail with the sky pirates who don't do anything?
First, I've observed that the Shadow of Mhach Alliance Raid series has been the least popular Alliance Raids, not due to story or difficulty, but rather due to requirements. The previous Alliance Raid series, the Crystal Tower, is frequently run because of the low entry requirements and that it is now required to progress the story. Other Alliance Raid series have been popularized by being required to unlock additional content, or due to being the Hot New Thing. For a long time, the Shadow of Mhach had few participants, but all of that seems to have changed ~4 weeks prior to today's episode. New Endwalker side content has been promised that requires completion of the Shadow of Mhach series, and the community have been blitzing it. Seriously, I pulled these Alliance Raids 3 days in a row on roulettes, even when other duties were providing seasonal bonuses.
Next, let's lay down the background lore! The Shadow of Mhach storyline. While the world Durmin inhabits is recovering from the 7th Umbral Calamity, this Calamity is fairly fresh and didn't upend the global order. Prior to the 7th Calamity 5 years ago, most of the archeology was focused on either Allagan items from the 4th Umbral Calamity, or from the disaster of the most recent 6th Umbral Calamity. The 6th Umbral Calamity is also known as the Calamity of Water, because of the torrential rain and rising seas which flooded the continents, laying waste to all. This Alliance Raid Series, the Scholar job series, and some coming MSQ all touch on the events of 6th Umbral Calamity & the nations involved. For this series, we focus on the city state of Mhach. You might notice the Void Ark is very purple and slightly organic-y. If this feels vaguely H. R. Giger, you're not alone.
Two recurring Final Fantasy enemies which are shown here are are Cúchulainn & Echidna. Cúchulainn is named after an Irish mythological hero found in the Ulster Cycle, and anime fans will know the name from the Fate series. Cúchulainn, or sometimes written as Queklain, was introduced to Final Fantasy in the Ivalice games of Final Fantasy Tactics & FF12. In those games, they are a Lucavi (possessing demon) which specializes in poison attacks. Echidna originates from Greek mythology as the mother of monsters, such as Chimera and Cerberus. Echidna premiered in Final Fantasy 3, but the depiction here is a bit closer to the FF4 incarnation.
Cait Sith is named after a Celtic mythological fae which appears as a black cat with a white spot on its chest. The myth sometimes states the cat is actually a witch which can transform. For Final Fantasy, Cait Sith first showed up in Final Fantasy 4 & 5, but these creatures would be more recognizable as what we call courels and gaelicats. Cait Sith is a summon in FF6, and the well known playable character in FF7, cementing its appearance.
We discover what Mhach was like during the final days before 6th Umbral Calamity. Summon demons, use them as a power source. If this sounds like the lead in to the game Doom, or the film Event Horizon, you're more preceptive than the mages of Mhach. The events leading to the 6th Umbral Calamity are known as the War of the Mages, with Mhach wielding Black Magic, later fueled by voidsent energies. The forces of Amdapor wielded White Magic, but don't think of this as significantly better than Mhach. Both sides disrupted the land's aether in the lead up the Calamity. The 3rd side in the war, Nym, was laid low by a horrible disease, which is expanded upon in the Scholar job quests.
Something cool about the location of this raid is that you can actually see the Void Ark in the overworld. It wanders between the northern parts of both the Sea of Clouds and the Churning Mists on a set schedule. This was in the game at HW release, so it was apparently a topic of discussion at the time, especially since its just spooky.
As another note the title of the raid series is Shadow of Mhach, but that inspires the question of what was Mhach. Mhach as stated in the episode lies in Yafaem Saltmoor, near Mhor Dhona, and was essentially a city of black mages. During the 5th Astral Era they came into conflict with Ampadoor, the city of white magic and Nym a city of Scholar and Marines (Nym is a little culturally vague). All 3 of these cities are precussors to the modern city states in the region Ul'dah comes from displaced Mhachi, although the tale is a bit more complicated than just that; Ampdapoor eventually was succeeded by Gridania and Limsa now controls the areas that Nym claimed domain over. And all 3 of these cities have notable landmarks and dungeons/raids asscoiated with them. I am personally a fan of War of the Magi lore as its a good break from the Allagans and tends to involve voidsent. Diabolos himself is the final boss of the Lost City of Ampdapoor, one my favorite ARR dungeons.
As a personal opinion, this (the Void Ark) is definitely my least favorite alliance raid, mostly cause its not really interesting to replay and doesn't really do much interesting with having 24 people available to team up. Its perfectly functional, just not interesting.
This game needs to stop introducing such good waifu designs. Radlia as a person seems obnoxious, but darn if she isn't pretty.
Then again, at least they're providing good Husbandos for that side as well, going off Leofard's dessign.
Love Shadows of Mhach, like its story better than the Stormblood Alliance Raid and even the Shadowbringers one.
… Hate the first part of the second tier because of a certain mob. Love that it's being done, though!
Woof, this is probably my least favorite design of Cait Sith among the FF series. Every time I look at it, I demand apologies from anyone who ever disparaged FFVII’s version (my personal favorite).
One thing I adore about FFXIV's storytelling is that the MC is an always an adventurer first and foremost, who happens to save the world. As such, not every plot hook needs to be "Oh no, the world's in danger again". Sometimes it can be as simple as "Two words: Sky. Pirates. You in?"
Another fun fact for those just watching the series that that haven't played FFXIV (or those that have, but like this series have been sticking more purely to the MSQ), there is a lot of optional content that Dan still isn't showing. In ARR, there are 5 optional dungeons available before reaching that expansion's endgame, and FIFTEEN which were released during the 2.x patches (Later expansions tended to not be so bonus-dungeon focused).
In one of those dungeons, which deals with voidsent, the final boss is… Diablos. And when you end the fight he doesn't die, but instead escapes, having been weakened, and turning into a small bat.
Just another way the writing team keeps things interwoven. You don't NEED to play that optional dungeon before doing Void Ark, but if you do when Cait Sith describes how Diablos showed up you realize "Oh, so this is where he went after, and why all this is kicking off NOW." If you'd not done it, you don't realize you missed anything.
Dan could you please turn down the party's spell effects? it looks ok in dungeon but in raids it makes stuff incredibly confusing.
i got a headache from all the white mages holy 🙁
Ah Limitless, probably one of my favorite mount themes. (Which was the theme playing as you fly into sky pirate hideout.)
And ack, it seems I've fallen behind in the heavensward side stories. I just completed the void ark not that long ago
I love everything about this storyline D: where's my animated movie and my kitty plushie with a floof tail?
I will probably miss every FF reference, but I won't shake how Redbill looks like Joker from P5, but FF14-ified.
EDIT: Okay, whoever has the flaming sword wins the fashion this time. A sword on fire is great, but it's gold-white fire, so it wins.
EDIT2: Yea, the sheer number of visual noise is one reason I don't think I'm picking up FF14. I like spell effects, but they're already almost OTT, and the sheer visual noise of the raids is just not my jam.
So will you be doing more job quest lines?
Edit: also are you going to cover amdapor dungeons.
A hole rips open in space-time, and there's always some dunderhead nearby who thinks "Oh boy! I could shoot that cannon at places, and rule the world!"
This is why we can't have nice things!
What kind of messed up tim burton spagetti strainer did they pull my boy cat sith through for this weird cameo?!
The real question is why Echidna is doing the Jack-O pose while fighting?
My understanding of the prononciation of "Cuchulainn" is "Coo-cuh-lin". I used to say it "Coo-coo-lane" because that was how everyone in the Fate franchise said it but uh….I eventually found that was wrong.
I love how this game remixes stuff from previous games in the series really well to make them new while still familiar.
51:48 I like it, as names go. It's catchy.
Regarding visually noisy battle effects, I use a macro to quickly turn them down and back up so I don't need to dive into the menus each time:
"off":
/bfx party simple
/bfx other off
/soundeffectsparty 50
/soundeffectsother 20
"on":
/bfx party all
/bfx other all
/soundeffectsparty 100
/soundeffectsother 100
FYI: as a bard, I love using peloton while we are moving in the raid area. It’s not good during battle, but helpful to help you and your team in between fights
Since reading The Dresden Files, it is so hard picturing that cute little kitty as Cat/Cait Sith. That said if it had been that Cat Sith on board the ship, there would not be any issues of anything threatening still existing on that thing…
