  1. When it comes to AOE’s, check the spell potency (shown on the tooltip for the spell);

    So say your AOE is 100 potency, your single target spell is 250 potency & you’re fighting a group of 2 enemies; your AOE spell basically becomes 200 potency (100 potency attack hitting 2 enemies with each cast – 100×2), but your single target spell is 250 potency so the AOE is a DPS loss in this example & you want to stick with the single target attack even though there is more than 1 enemy.

    But then say in the next group of enemies there is 3 of them; your AOE now basically becomes a 300 potency spell as it’s hitting 3 times with each cast, 50 potency more than your single target spell & is therefore a DPS gain & you want to switch to the AOE spell (until one enemy dies, leaving 2; in which case the previous example applies again).
