  1. Aaah, I was wondering what the third detour was, but this makes perfect sense! I made my own character as a Dragoon when I started and I agree this is a good idea to showcase as a runner-up to Heavensward!

  2. Job stones aren’t delved into in the Main Story Questline, but there’s lots of other quests and storylines for the game in later expansions that explore them or items very much like them. Other similar/tangential items may also show up and be explained a small amount in the main story line too.

  3. So an important thing to note, most of the structure and design or ARR job quests is taken directly from the 1.0 jobs quests, all the 1.0 jobs and all of them except WHM effectively tell the same story as in 1.0 (WHM's story was specifically about preventing another different event that could have caused a Calamity). This is very noticeable in some cases as the quest design for Class quests is actually quite different from the Jobs quests, often involving different objectives specific to your class and multiple steps and are for the most part better stories. Mean while the Job Quests as shown here are mostly get a thing and comeback to NPC in a weird location. And the stories are mostly weaker for it, DRG and BLM are the only Job Quests I have any soft spot for in ARR that came from 1.0. Note NIN, SCH and SMN did get new quests and are notably more well written. Although SMN does have some weird MSQ requirements tied to its progression for lore reasons.

  4. Estinien is kind of an ascended cryptid at this point. I'm a little sad that he's the only one from the class/job quests who really has so far.

Souls, also soul stones, are most talked about in the Dragoon, Scholar, Dark Knight, and Sage quests, if I remember right. They're one part crystalized memory, one part aether crystal, and a lot of your abilities happen because you come more in tune with those in the stone.

  5. Huh, I was fully expecting the third batch of side content to be the Hildibrand quests. I guess that stuff IS really long… I just figured that, if nothing else, Dan would want to show off the animations in some of those scenes. You can tell that the FFXIV team had a LOT of fun making some of those… XD

  6. What Ywain says here at 7:00 is notably false. In the backstory to 1.0 the Eorzean Alliance fell apart because Ishgard did NOT come when her allies called her to defend against the Imperial invasion

10:00 Now Dan don't lie to the audience Dragoons have a very important tank job, they have to tank the floor

  7. Now Durmin can do JUMPS to deliver snacks! I can see it now – landing in front of a peckish person and leaping away in a cute flair.
Edit: WAIT, so the Dragoon class is like it is in Legend of Dragoon? You get a soul of the dragon that you transform into?

  8. As Durmin learns the way of the pokey stick, the spoiler free lore comment is… in a pickle. I haven't leveled dragoon, so I've mined some minds in my FC and tried to put together some stuff.

So, for Durmin to be a dragoon, he first would've had to level the Lancer class (obviously this didn't happen, due to the skip, but according to the game he did). Lancer begins in Gridania, and the lead NPC is a veteran of the Wood Wailers, Ywain Deepwell. During Durmin's training with Ywain, he comes across a Duskwight Elezen called Foulques of the Mist. Foulques proclaims the Lancers Guild to be a bunch of cowards, and their training methods insufficient. While Ywain preaches resolve and composure, Foulques thinks proper training involves placing oneself in danger, relying on the danger of bodily harm to fuel one's heroics. Eventually, Foulques resorts to sabotaging Ywain's tests and even kidnapping novice lancers to coerce Durmin into compliance. Eventually, this comes to a head when Foulques endangers Durmin by drawing the ire of a monstrous boar. While Durmin stands his ground, spear in hand, Foulques is left cowering before the boar.

In their final encounter, Foulques' history is revealed: he was once a lancer trainee, and fell in with some compatriots who decided to filch from the guild funds. Foulques regretted this crime, and convinced his fellows to come clean. But when he went to confess, his former comrades turned on him, proclaiming that the Foulques was the sole thief. In spite of his own testimony, the prejudice against Duskwights lead to him taking the blame and being empoisoned. Upon his escape, Foulques has used his fury at the lancers to fuel his quest for "true courage". In the end, Durmin must face off against the rouge lancer, and upon being defeated, Foulques backs away from Durmin in fear, slipping off a cliff into a deep chasm.

The only other thing to say on the dragoon quests is that they give great backstory to the Ishgard-Dravania War. This shows how the war with the dragons has impacted civilians and solider alike, Alberic and Estinien being excellent examples.

Estinien will play a part in future stories, so for those who never experienced the Dragoon quests, the reaction to meeting him is typically, "Who is this jerk?".
For Dragoon players, the response is instead, "Oh, this jerk!".

  9. 38:30 Dan mentions that there are many monster designs that come from XI, which is true, but is far from the only final fantasy game that has models appearing in XIV.

I know that there are multiple enemies in the game that are touched up models from the XIII trilogy, a few XV models in later expansions, and even the PS2 entries XII and X had a few designs (if not models from their remasters) appear throughout the life of XIV. It is an impressively resourceful borrowing of assets that is both economical and gives players little Easter eggs here and there to notice. I would not be surprised if, in future expansions, we will see designs pop up from VII's remake or XVI.

Oh, and a little bit of trivia, XIII enemy designs and models tend to be closely tied to the Allagans… Possibly due to XIII being considerably more technologically advanced than other games in the series.

  10. Huh. Wasn't expecting the DRG quests, but they are a fitting lead-up to Heavensward. And well, despite not maining DRG, I did go out of my way to level it up for these quests before I got there myself since a friend of mine did it. Plus I did it because, as a Lalafel, the animations are amusing.

  11. As a fellow Dragoon, this will be fun to watch. I am incredibly biased but Dragoon is great. Though, I would say rogue/ninja is a little better. Though that's largely personal perspective since I prefer the stealthy/sneaky stab them with knives kind of playstyle in my rpgs.
