  1. When I went through ARR recently this was the single most groan-inducing bit of it all, literally the worst!
At least the next runaround bit before the dungeon after Garuda doesn't have you trekking over literally all of Eorzea.

  2. The Mimidoa bit might've annoyed my fem roe even more. My axe is three times bigger than you, dude, Twelve help me if you can't behave for a minute!
Didn't realize Mistbeard got mentioned this early. Cool! (Hope I'm not getting anybody’s expectations up, there's not exactly a massive payoff or anything but… cool to see some little details like this ahead of time!)

  3. ah yes, the corrupted crystal runaround. The most frustrating part of ARR's story by far. At least the Company of Heroes fetch quests served some kind of purpose.

By the way – Dan's unlikely to show it since it's an optional dungeon, but Pharos Sirius is a dungeon that you can access in ARR's post-game, with the Siren as its final boss. Very good dungeon music, too. One of the first dungeons to have constant background music throughout instead of an intro theme and generic dungeon battle music.

  4. lol. small Durmin

First comment: 2:55 I just noticed that characters will look in the direction of another character if they are selected by the player. That is neat.

    Second comment: 7:40 Bun-girl spotted

    Third comment: 10:10 Bun-boy spotted

Fourth comment: 18:36 Looks angelic almost. I could see why people would fall for it. Though I wonder how funnier it would be if FF14 used a different siren model for this enemy. You know the creature more beast looking than woman. IDK I guess I just have a strange sense of humor

Fifth comment: 27:10 beware the shins of Durmin's enemies

Sixth comment: 29:42 You can just hear the death glare Dan/Durmin give this guy.

Final comment: As always keep up the good work and remember, "Have Fun With It."

  5. If they gave you time to help people and familiarize with everything BEFORE announcing the cataclysm, all those events would be way more digestible… and even funny instead of frustrating, like, I don't have a problem with it right now, but I can't imagine playing through this three of four times.
Player is focused in killing a demigod, everything else feels like a whim.

  6. You can just feel Durmin losing patience with each step of the process of just getting the stupid crystal. I get they want to to explore Eorzea and the different city-states, but this was kind of a waste of time.

  7. Oh right, the haunted island quests. Forgot about those. Um, for today's Spoiler Free, Not Necessary for Enjoyment of the Story Lore comment, I guess we'll round out our 2.0 playable peoples with the Hyur?

The Hyur is your average human analog ("human" in Eorzea encompasses all of the playable peoples, they seem to all be biological subspecies? I'm not a Taxonomist). In FFXI, they were Humes, who were generally average in stats. The Humes migrated to Vana'diel from some empire in the east, and were not indigenous to the region.

The Hyur play pretty much the same role in Eorzea. They are not native to the Eorzean continent, but now reside across the realm in great numbers. There is no Hyur "homeland", the Hyurs who came did so from pretty much all directions. There were three notable "waves" of immigration, but even within these "waves", Hyur have a large variety of languages, traditions, and cultures. This diversity is a strength they have lent to the institutions of Eorzea, but also result in very little tying Hyurs together as a people.

There are two playable versions of Hyur, Midlanders and Highlanders. In comparison to the other peoples of Eorzea, the differences are incredibly minor. Highlanders may average as larger & taller than their Midlander cousins, and may tend to have darker complexions, but these differences are pretty much immaterial. Some Midlanders outsize Highlanders, and all Hyurs have complexions which fall within the real human spectrum. Midlanders seem to congregate more in Gridania (and are the sole "source" of the Padjals), and Highlanders were once abundant in Gyr Abania, but the Imperial invasion has resulted in mass displacement. One bit of odd trivia is that Female Highlanders were not playable in 1.0. All depictions of Highlander ladies were using Midlander models. They were added in A Realm Reborn.

The naming conventions for Hyurs follow a European standard, Personal name and then Family name. Midlanders may have names that seem more Fantasy British compared to Highlanders' Fantasy German, but honestly, they all just seem like Fantasy Names.

There is a third group of Hyur, who appear similar to Midlanders. Hailing from the Far East, they use "Family Name Personal Name" conventions, similar to East Asia. Durmin hasn't met any of them yet, but it just goes to show, Hyurs are pretty much everywhere.

We'll talk about other playable peoples (added in later expansions) when Durmin starts encountering them in the story.

  8. Playing a female character (and just, like, being a woman) can make some bits and pieces of FFXIV kind of uncomfortable. There are a lot of characters who are just casually sexist and it sucks. They're almost always depicted as wrong but like… Is it wholly necessary?

  9. So, just as a note, for those not in the know: Christmas is a season, not just the namesake day. iirc, it lasts till Epiphany (which should b roughly 12 days later, or the appropriate Sunday), however depending on affiliation/denomination Christmas decor may be left up as late as Candlemas.
If you're not Christian, who cares how long your Christmas decor is up? You're basically re-poaching holidays, like how the Catholic church poached and rebranded holidays for their calendar way back when.

Also, I'm loving the match-cuts and that "costume change" animation/scene from last episode. Hope it isn't too much work for you. I sure as hell couldn't do it.

  10. Durmin: "If this is earth… I'm going to hit you with it.
Hedyn: "…one overflowing with earth aspected aether."
    Dan: "…Are you serious?"
Hedyn: "I suppose that joke was in poor taste."

  11. So much work to acquire the incorrectly aspected crystals, and then getting the ice crystal was just a matter of talking to someone and then slaying a spriggan.

  12. A note of interest: The quest he's on in this episode, involving Mimidoa, is effectively a sequel to a 1.0 quest! In fact, the story Mimidoa tells you about dealing with the siren before- Is the 1.0 Goldsmith quest. It was a whole quest about finding out what to do about the song and eventually you create brass earplugs!
Now I do not remember it in it's entirety, I think it turned out there was a twist in the quest that it wasn't so much this kind of siren that was being a problem, and were actually the sanguine sirens (the pirates) causing trouble, 'twas just that one of them had a real good singing voice that she put to good use during the raids, which led to people thinking it was this kind of siren and the earplugs wound up not being that necessary.

  13. Ahhhh, yes….Mimidoa. The first in a line of quest givers that I have used the /slap emote against. He disgusted me so much that I had to express it in game and I have just kept using it for whenever I feel that a quest giver deserves it.

  14. Welp, guess I’m gonna start spelling my name with a “y” now.

Also I wasn’t looking at the video, so it was really jarring to suddenly hear Dan say my name in the middle of all the fantasy names in this game.

  15. I know you are skipping most side content, but here's hoping you'll at least do the dungeons. Pharos Sirius and Pharos Sirius (Hard) are both fairly interesting.
