  1. Yeah, I'm definitely excited for this, but I also hope that there won't be more than two episodes per week: with 1+ hour durations each, I don't know if I'd be able to find the rime to watch more, and this would sadden me.

  2. I was surprised when you went with lala for a primarily cutscenes-focused playthrough. When I first fantasied to lala I felt like it somewhat ruined a lot of the seriousness of some cutscenes. But eventually I got used to it, and I even realised how expressive their facial emotions can be compared to some other races. Though the walking and sitting animation, and adorably cute glams can still be quite a distraction during some scenes xD

  3. Not a bad idea. I want to see this series go all the way, even though I can't promise to watch everything right away when it airs since I'm still in the middle of Heavensward on my main and hope to avoid spoilers.

I will definitely return to this series after playing through the story myself, however. And seeing as it's been a number of years since I've played any of my characters through the early story, I'm very much looking forward to these first episodes as a long needed refresher on how we got to where I'm currently at.

Every time I watch that opening cinematic I cringe not only at the protag's criminally overbuilt axe, but also how callously he abuses it. I'm sorry, but that thing is your livelihood if you are any kind of warrior, you do not just drag the edge along the stones at your feet just because you think it looks cool.

Then we get to the in-game introduction and I'm reminded why Twilight Over Thanalan might be one of the best songs in this entire game. And it has a excellent soundtrack even by Final Fantasy series standards.

  4. Seeing Dan so excited about this game, makes me wanna play it as well. I'll definitely see it through as long as you are willing to make this playthrough, hopefully we'll get to see the good stuff.

  5. If you start in a different town, I assume you have different quests to start off. Is that right? If so, do you get to experience the quests when you get to other towns?

  6. for people curious about the voice actors getting changed that Dan was talking about. It was the studio that was changed from one based in the US to one based in England, and along with that change in studio came a change to most of the actors as well.
Edit: Along with one tragic instance of a voice actress getting murdered along with her children by her ex husband.

  7. As a person not capable of making game subscriptions in my current salary and a fan of Story Mode in particular, I am very excited for the playthrough of this game. Especially since you mentioned it bears resemblance to the Ivalice FF games. Thank you for starting this, Dan. I'm hoping it rockets off to Shadowbringers.

  8. Aaah, at this point it's nostalgic to hear Taliesin Jaffe's Thancred and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's Hydaelyn… I do kind of miss them even if their new actors are really good <3
Thank you for doing this series! Despite having played it for myself, this is bound to be slightly different from my own experience and I love that we can have a story focused run-through available for people unable to experience this for themselves.

  9. "Boy amateur hour over here. Get used to that! Honestly, for both our sakes. If this playthrough continues we'll be together for a while. And you're just going to need to get used to me doing stupid things"

Well to that last point, frankly that's just being a gamer. ;P

  10. If this works mechanically like many of the MMOs I've seen/played, I've very excited to see the return of the "Also, I'm here!" Dan from KHUC in Durmin as the named+voiced NPCs do things in cutscenes and such while Durmin is just sort of there.

  11. I honestly don't know how well this is gonna work out, but I am seriously hoping it succeeds. This is a wonderful story and this series will help many people who otherwise wouldn't experience it find an accessible way in. You can bet I'll do what little I can to help it get off the ground.

  12. Well, with that kind of endorsement at the end I'm actually tempted to try this again myself, for the third time (which is suppose the be the one that does it I guess :D). I have the time now so why not. I'll try to keep up with the show.

  13. I love the idea of the original game being SO BAD that the only option they could find to fix everything was LITERALLY "NUKE IT FROM ORBIT." I also absolutely adore the fact that the new developer had the courage and insight to do that, and that he did it in such a remarkable and cinematic way. Many MMO's will come and go, but very few will incorporate their end into a massive story beat and cinematic set piece like this (for those who didn't watch the primer video Dan mentioned, The planet looking thing that Bahamut came out of in the beginning of the cinematic was the moon in this world, and for several months the dev team had it slowly creep closer and closer to the world, becoming bigger and bigger in the sky and causing more and more calamitous events across the world as it did, then the servers shut down and that trailer dropped.)

  14. I enjoyed the FF7 Remake playthrough and the primer video, and that intro cut scene a lot. My guess is that despite having zero interest in playing MMOs I'll watch this whole series.

  15. The funny thing… That it's not just MSQ that has a bunch of story.
Coils of Bahamut is optional, but it's an official closure to ARR storyline
Crystal Tower Raid is required to continue the story to Heavensward
Alexander and Omega raids are also important in story department, Omega closes Stormblood and post-Heavensward story.
Return to Ivalice raids not only tell the story of Ivalice, but also unlock another piece of content – Bozja.
I thought that Bozja is just another grind location, but it has its own storyline – Save the Queen, which is inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII.
Then there are Weapons side story which has its own unique events and storyline inspired by Mobile Suit Gundam.

So just doing MSQ still doesn't tell full story because some characters finish their storylines in their own little side-stories.

  16. I know you just said you wouldn't, but it'd be great to include the Coils of Bahamut storyline, because it really manages to wrap a bow on the Calamity and everything that happens in 1.0, and also introduces Alisaie properly. I also don't know how you're going to handle the Crystal Tower, now that it's required to advance the MSQ; I guess you'll know if it's worth doing Shadowbringers by the time you get there.
Edit: also a smug smile at the god choice.

  17. Dan I get why you say the first season is a slog.

But I have to say this…

I find your presentation of this mundane content absolutly delightful. "You" make this content amusing. Well you "and" Nosaj. Please continue to point out such oddities as you progress.

Literally the day before you posted your announcement I had resolved to find a lets play of Final Fantasy XIV. And honestly Dan "you" are my number 1 pick for who to watch play this game. Your voices, editing choices, commentary, etc. It's all exactly what I had hoped to find in a let's player's presentation.

I will be very sad if you are forced to give up on this content due to lack of views.

  18. Honestly so far this doesn’t seem bad or dull ect, it’s just an intro. Not everything has have a cinematic style big opening, small slow intros are fine in my book, especially if you have to digest a lot of things.

  19. as someone who does not have the time or willpower to get into an mmo again, i am super excited for this play through! i've heard so much good from friends and i very want to see this story but am not able to drop the focused time to get there. I look forward to listening to this while working as long as it ends up running for ^^

  20. It's probably a time consuming idea, but I wouldn't say bad. Doing a video about one of the most popular MMOs out there, and one of the only ones with a story that gets anywhere near good.

  21. Ul'dah was technically my starting city, but that was on a different character (also a GLD), on the old version of the free trial. Never got very far and ended up making a CNJ on a different server entirely to join a bunch of friends, so my current character's starting city is Gridania instead. So I've got a bit of a sentimental connection to Ul'dah, though I still prefer Gridania's aesthetic.
