the new gear can be a glamour set. You have to be in a "resting area" (near the house, in a main city or near an aetherite) to "see" the glamor sets. 1. In the gearset list, change glamor plate. 2. select the glamour for the new set. 3. change to another job and back to the job you just updated the plate for. I think the problem was that changing the glamour plate link does not automatically apply the glamour. that only happens when you change to the job after you've updated that.
