  1. The cluster of banners in the beginning represents the factions on one side of the battle we're sweeping through. And the white banner afterwards is the enemy's.

The sword it focuses on belongs to one of your allies that falls in battle right before you show up to 1v1 the enemy in the next shot.

The barrage of flashbacks we see are all taken from the previous expansion's trailers. And when the main character flashes in blue throughout the battle with the angel, they're swapping thru the various classes and fighting styles that they used in the previous expansion trailers. This shows that all the power they've built throughout the story are no match for this new threat and that they have to "become what you must" in order to defeat it, as stated later in the voice over.

As a final thought, it's interesting that you said you assumed the cat in the black cloak was a villian because this expansion plays a lot with the concept of light vs. dark and flips it on its head. Hence the angel being an enemy.

  2. XIV is an MMO, so while it's my favourite by far it might not be the best place to jump in.

Luckily, for the most part they aren't connected at all story wise so you can just try whichever one looks the most interesting to you ๐Ÿ™‚ And if it doesn't click, there's a good chance another one will!

Really enjoyed the analysis, it's tied for my favourite XIV trailer for sure, and besides a few spots I agree could have been better I'm glad you enjoyed! I can confirm that the man and woman in the burning forest are allies of our main character, and those were indeed flashbacks to previous events! I could go far into detail but at this point we are three expansions into the story so I don't want the overwhelm ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Really glad you are looking at these! You replied to my suggestion yesterday and I have to say that even if Shadowbringers is a great trailer the original one(A new beginning or Flames of truth that includes some very old minor spoilers) is in its own league.

  4. Additional support for the rest of the FFXIV trailers. Start with A Realm Reborn, then Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers goes here but you already did that one, then Endwalker and Dawntrail.

  5. There's so much to unpick from this trailer. It's the 3rd expansion to the MMO so there's a lot of historic references in it. The flashbacks are snippets from old trailers and there's an story arch across all of them leading to this point basically (and into the next expansion Endwalker). The classes/jobs that he transforms into are in order of the games/ expansions. Archer for original game, Warrior for A Realm Reborn, Dragoon for Heavensward, Samurai for Stormblood, then Dark Knight for Shadowbringers. The main guy shown fighting is essentially your player character represented in all of their trailers

As mentioned below, the two sets of flags represent the battle that happened prior to this expansion, showing the alliance on the one side and the enemy faction on the other.

The female cat lady (along with the other speaking characters) are long term companions of the player character, so interesting about the ambiguity of her allegience as a non-player. As players we were very much happy to see them (given the circumstances in the game).

The specific focus on the "Gun Sword", and the rabbit lady in the trailer would be for a specific reason. The Gunbreaker and Dancer were new classes/jobs introduced in the expansion (albeit exist in previous iterations of the Final Fantasy franchise) so it was kind of their introduction moment. The bunny race (Viera) was also new hence the slight slow-mo on them I reckon.

The whole premise of this expansion was quite different. In the previous ones you were the "Warrior or Light", going out in the world to conquer the darkness. In this one, you get transported to another world that's been consumed by Light and you have to become the "Warrior of Darkness" to save it.

The little girl (Minfillia) is a throw back to a person you knew from earlier expansions, a major curveball for players as she effectively died in earlier expansions. Ironically this trailer I think is more confusing for people who play the game than those who don't as there's a couple of things that make you think "what, how?", whereas, being just a viewer you can sit back and think, yeah that's cool. ๐Ÿ˜€

Also worth noting that the voice over isn't sourced from the player character but the guy with the crystal arm.

If it makes you feel better, there is a full cat race called Hrothgar, which are full blown fur, big lion type humanoids.

The game is huge, there's a lot of story and plenty more trailers to watch (if you watch the older ones you'll see some of the easter eggs in this one), highly recommend them as they're all pretty fantastic.

Always love watching your videos. I'm not a film maker or anything like that but I find your videos great to watch and very interesting so please keep up the good work!

  6. Since you're doing some FF related stuff, something I'd like to see you do is a one-off cinematic made awhile back called, "Visual Works Character Prototype." I find this cinematic fascinating because its very well made, and aesthetically stunning, but something about it just doesn't quite land and I can't put my finger on it as to why. I just wonder if maybe you'd have some insights or thoughts to punch it up from good to great.

Also you might want to check out the Final Fantasy 8 opening. I don't know if its the very first cinematic ever (at least what we would consider a cinematic by modern standards), but I know its many people's very first they'd ever seen. Its awesome to see something made in 1999, 25 years ago, and yet has so many similarities to what we watch today. Also, FF8 is the game that introduced the Gunblade that you liked from this cinematic.

  7. If you want to watch more FF XIV Cinematics and kinda "in Order" you should go as follows:
    1. FF XIV – Flames of Truth
    2. FF XIV – Heavensward Trailer
    3. FF XIV – Stormblood Trailer
    4. FF XIV – Shadowbringers (this is the one you watched here and is the second latest update to the game
    5. FF XIV – Endwalker Full Trailer (this is the most recent one that is live at the moment)
    6. FF XIV – Dawntrail Full Trailer (this is for a new expansion coming out in summer 2024)

You won't really make a hold of the whole story since it is way too complex but they are all phenomenal trailers to watch and analyze. Keep in mind when watching the early one that they are 10 years old. Trust me they do NOT look that way ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Watching the Shadowbringers trailer without having seen the others is like watching the Avengers Infinity War trailer without having seen any of the other films. Highly recommend going and watching them all in order!

  9. You absolutely don't need to have played the other Final Fantasy titles to know what is going on, just all the expansions of the base game. The game will tell you what you need to know for the story 14 sets out to tell. FF14 is a theme park MMO. It is it's own, contained story, but contains references to other Final Fantasy games in the form of different types of enemies, bosses, gear, jobs, etc. you encounter/acquire in game. So it's really subtle fanservice to the fans of the other games, but this doesn't detract from the enjoyment of it at all.

  10. Hey, man. Iโ€™ve absolutely been loving your commentary on video game trailers/movies.

Iโ€™m sure you have a lot of content still to go over that will help you channel continue to grow, but Iโ€™d actually be curious to see you react to BAD video game trailers lol. I feel there may be stuff to learn there and it might end up being very funny.

However, just a suggestion. otherwise, keep doing you, because itโ€™s fantastic!

  11. oh man, Shadowbringers is such a good trailer. I'll probably be the lone voice in the comments but honestly, the other trailers just aren't as fun to watch if you don't play the game, with the exception of Flames of Truth (110% worth watching, now THAT'S a spectacle). This ShB trailer does tell a story at least, albeit with reveals and questions that won't mean much to someone who doesn't know the characters (Matoya what? Minfilia WHAT? and what the hell is the Crystal Tower doing in the middle of all that?!). Heavensward has some cool single shots but doesn't really "say" much and Stormblood / (and the new) Dawntrail is just a series of cool shots, period. I guess maybe you could make a case for Endwalker, but again, if you don't know what's being revealed, there's nothing much to see but some nifty animations as there's no internal "story" in the trailer to follow along with for a new person. Unknown people saying cryptic things in dark corridors and a couple of cool pan overs of places that are mostly just pretty.

The FFXIV trailers seem to be geared for those already playing, because they don't seem to be reaching outside of the existing fanbase. 90% internal game references being showcased and not a lot of "story" glue which is weird because the game itself is MASSIVE on story.

  12. You have no idea what youโ€™ve done. The FFXIV community will see this and they will find you.

Be prepared for once of the best communities around to welcome you.

I love this outsider look at how these cinematics are constructed. A lot of people that look at these are already fans and know what is going on. But I enjoy these kind of perspective a lot.
