While I agree with the poster of the reddit's question, and often use that to point out to people who talk about how cash shop ruined WoW reasons, I will defend the FF XIV cash shop, by pointing out, that all profits from that cash shop, go directly to the development teams budget.
As a new player, when I look at the 14 cash shop I don't see the same level of pure greed on things like mounts as I do with the current WoW cash shop. Speaking about the tokens – that is a terrible option. It absolutely ruins the in game economy. Here's the thing. Once they added the WoW token, I as a casual player HAD to buy a token for real money to be able to keep up with the ridiculous inflation on all the in game items specifically because I didn't spend all my time in the game to make money. The hyper inflation it causes drives out casual players or forces them to spend money on tokens to sell to the people who have no life at all and spend all their time exploiting the game to make as much money as possible.
Oh man you guys. I clicked on a cash shop video, and you guys are talking about some "gil token" at the 1:35 mark. I know you're not talking about anything even remotely compared to a "gold token" like WoW has, but phrasing!
Dono what you talking bout……*hides the empty bottles of fantasia…….* coughs
more often than not, the items in FFXIV's cash shop are seasonal items from past seasonal events. a lot of times those items don't go into the seasonal rotation for years but it's there in the cash shop if you want it. As far as ease of use, I think they made it a little better since they moved it out of mogstation but I'm still having to log in like two or three times just to purchase something LOL
Cash shop dislike and wow token dislike can be separate things. Many people don't like the cash shop in wow for several reasons. Cash shop mounts are very unique and general have great specials, compared to the plethora of recolored skins they throw at players with in-game rewards. The cosmetics were in the same boat, but they stopped selling them. Faction imbalance is huge black eye, where a player can get screwed if they're picking alliance with some dead realms essentially. Your only option is to either start a new character or server/faction transfer.
The big big big reason why wow players dislike the token and the boosting, is because boosts for gold are everywhere. Group finder is 80% boosts for arena, raids, m+, or even torghast. Trade chat is literally people spamming boosts. It's hugely detrimental to arenas.
Blizzard doesn't care about selling boosts, they don't ban bots, they only care about making rmt so they can get that gold token cut.
Wait, what's a gil token?
All the other content in the game frames how players perceive a cash shop. You articulated it as trust, I agree.
Large groups in the WoW community believe Blizzard prioritizes cash over the state of their game. When WoW players feel slighted, angry, bitter, or disappointed about the game; then see substantial work go into a cash item: many perceive the company prioritizing sales over content. They are looking for a root cause for why the game is in shambles.
FF14 doesn't have that problem because players don't feel cheated by Square. They don't feel like Square puts cash above the well being of their game. FF14 players arn't looking for someone or something to blame.
The cash shop didn't damage WoW, poor management damaged WoW.
However their are Activision games that were damaged by cash shops and loot boxes. WoW wasn't one of them
480k is about 15% of what I spent penta-melding my aesthetes
WoW has been around much longer then FF14 and has a larger amount of fans then FF14 because they were the first mega MMO and they set the standard…FF14's fan base was much smaller even after Stormblood and the amazing Shadowbringers
two very Different manager styles
…one manager comes in an lays his dick on the table day one and starts making Big sweeping changes in an organization that has already established it's own history, culture and work environment.
Another manager come in and is able to make the slow and gradual changes that fit their style of leadership simply because it's a smaller team and there is more one on one communication. because the leader needs their team just as much as the team needs the leadership. it's slower but less angry knee jerk reactions.
WoW had this connection with their fans, but lost it after years of seemingly endless success and growth and the original creators/Devs who set the tone of the company have long since left
keep in mind the history of FF14…They rebuilt the game from the ground up and refused to give up on the people who supported the game and was seen as a major entry in the flagship Final Fantasy series. that says volumes about how they treat and view their player base
WoW's cash shop was heavily advertised in the Blizzard launcher right before you log in. FF14's is there, but it's not RIGHT in your face.
WoW devs have gotten more and more aggressive with pushing the cash shop and milking their fans and adding in these wow tokens or whatever
FF14 has not done this to my knowledge
I would not have a problem with these cash shops if they only sold seasonal stuff like the Halloween broom mount BUT ALSO allowed players to earn it in game.
Having cash shop EXCLUSIVE mounts is just straight up wrong when a game already makes you pay a monthly fee just to be able to play the game you purchased.
The sub is there to fuel game development, adding a cash shop on top of that is just scummy, and I can't see how anyone could justify it, especially when it holds items that cannot be earned through gameplay.
My biggest issue with the cash shop is that Blizzard puts out a new patch and gives 10 mount recolors in game and then sells a unique mount in the shop. Yes it’s tied to the 6 month sub, but it just seems backwards. I’d be more than happy to grind content for something new. Not just a blue thing I already have in green.
Spotting that OTF shirt on Chris. /fistbump
Chris is now a communist.
The cash shop bike is my favorite mount in the game, and I think it's one of the things that is worth buying on the cash shop- I have even given it to a couple friends who started the game- but I do think it's a little upsetting that there's no way to earn an equivalent mount early in the game.
One of the biggest things to me is that Wow's cash shop is in game and shoved in your face, FF14 Mog Station is not. Of course the Wow Tokens are a huge difference as well, but I feel like the in game nature of the Wow Cash shop is a lot of what makes people notice / complain about it more.
To be honest the ff14 Cash shop doesn't bother me nearly as much as the per month retainer and companion app subscription model.
your comments about game prices not changing doesn't really pan out when you consider in game microtransactions, DLC, and collector's editions. The base price is not the complete package anymore. They've found ways to piece out the content into smaller chunks. It's like claiming that Gatorade hasn't increased in price from $2 a bottle, when they've gone down from 36oz, to 32oz, and then to 28oz over time.
Years ago I heard "If you aren't paying for the product, YOU are the product." It was referring to how Youtube and Facebook are "free" services.
The FF cash shop IS NOT IN THE GAME, every time I wanna go look at it I gotta tab out of the game time ro reconsider open the store and log in more time to reconsider then I finally can buy whatever item it is.
P.s. since 14 has 1000% less reskin mounts in the base game im ok with the occasional store mount
I know you needed to fill a 26 min video but the answer is simple. Ff14 has a cashshop with mounts but continues to make new unique mounts in game. Wow mostly pumps out reskins and recolors in game and puts all the new and unique stuff on the cash shop. Another wrinkle is i believe that many cash shop mounts in FF14 originate from reigons where the game is free to play.
A point I haven't heard brought up in the wow v. ff boost discussion is that in FF14, a boost or msq skip for new or returning players removes core content from FF.
In WoW the emphasis is clearly on the endgame, where the leveling/story content is perceived as a barrier to entry.
A skip in WoW reduces the barrier to entry. In FF it punishes the player.
Dark Souls FTW
My main issue with FF'S cash shop is that they charge $18 for an outfit that is only for ONE character! Although you don't need to make alts to play all the clases, some of us still have alts for other reasons. I would actually buy more outfits from the cash shop if they were account wide like a lot of the mounts are.
I admit I am a Fantasiaholic. But I gladly pay that because:
1. I know what I spend for and fully aware the cost of it
2. I know I am not forced by the game to buy it
3. I know where the money goes to (to developers and data centers expansion). Also the devs deserve it.
4. I know I can't sell it in game for gils neither trade it with another player. The item is solely mine and also belongs only to 1 character I choose.
5. I know that my game progression does not depend on anything from the shop, and it doesn't affect anyone either. It is entirely OPTIONAL.
6. and so I know that any items I bought from cash shop is purely enhancing my gameplay.
7. The game does not shove cashshop under my nose in such a blatant way every time I login, but rather tuck away nicely in a small window.
8. I am aware and acknowledge of any risk inherited from cashshop item is solely mine. For example, boost item to level my character means I need to spend some time to learn the job.
Oh look more WoW based FFXIV content 🤔 it's almost like I was right and assgold is ruining the FF community because now everything is literally about him or WoW. Can't wait for XIV to be about XIV again
Two reasons I think people don't think of the cash shop as bad in 14… (1) there's no direct link in the game. (2) people are HAPPY with the game so they will put up with more monetization. If they feel they're getting their subscription's worth IN THE GAME they won't be grudge the company making a few extra bucks off of optional things.
Yes that's a very good point. If the cash shops in either game didn't exist what would be the current monthly subscription cost? I would assume they would be higher. So all these people with extra disposable income are helping YOU have a lower subscription cost.
Of the Final Fantasy XIV cash shop the one thing that annoys me the most is the monthly recurring fee for retainers. I'd be fine with a one-time purchase price.
Even if you take the WoW token out of the question. Blizzard has repeatedly reskinned and recolored mounts and put them in game. While at the same time putting much more awesome and better looking mounts in the cash shop, and sometimes used as incentives to get people to buy into 6 months of play time.
Square Enix puts unique mounts in game and in the cash shop. The disparity between them isn't as large. And when they do recolor mounts it's typically to be used like the ex trial mounts, which gain you a unique mount once you collect them all.
If Blizzard treated in game mounts like they did cash shop mounts in a similar manner to Square I think there'd be less issue in regard to cash shop mounts.
