FFXIV Veteran Reacts to "Asmongold's Worst Hot Take"

While FF14 has many positives, I want to go over some of the things I hate about the game.

  2. The whole combat talk is exactly why I didn't keep playing.
As a wow player it was painful to play FFXIV with all the delay between pressing a button and it actually happening.
I really like watching raid videos and keep thinking "I want to do that encounter" but then I remember the combat issues and immediately revert my thoughts.

  3. This was an unexpectedly excellent summary and in alot of points you mirrored my experienced. I wanted to play FFXIV but i also didnt, and quit for a while during the stormblood. I was very engaged to the story and world… I even loved my animations and how my skills were comboing and more flashy then most games… Yet i was so, so bored and i couldnt explain why. I eventually pushed through, but and reached to end game, but it was honestly mostly because my girlfriend was hugely into it, and i wanted to participate in the thing she loved so much.

And yes, i despise doing roulette… But i also want to do it, because combat conceptualy so awesome! Yet the unresponsiveness, what is more, whenever i fell into a lower dungeon, my kit just being taken away to the levels of agony… And despite sometimes wanting to, i dont play FFXIV these days… Last time i bought sub, it half of it even runned out and i couldnt find motivation to play.

I suppose i will just reitirate… You said everything i felt but wasnt able to articulate. I hope it gets more visibility. Because despite my problems with FFXIV, i think on so many levels, it was really the best MMORPG i played. I loved it, i wanted to play it. And even think "if i dont like this, i gues it will just prove, i dont like mmorpgs" and maybe that's true. I dont know. All i know, i genuenly want this game to be better.

  4. He made a vid with all if not most of FFXIV problems when Asmongold did a vid it kinda made him look bias when he was talking about WoW's graphics being more appealing then FFXIV which i couldnt believe it looked to cartoonish to me reminded me of Crash bandicoot but he showed a few comparisons that gave a better understanding of why he may have said this. As for the combat latency ( the delay in which you push an action and that action actually happening) as well as ppl looking like they are not near you during certain mechanics like stacking i would say is FFXIV biggest weakness sure its tolerable to in extent in pve content and noticeable but in pvp it does get annoying its like playing rock paper scissors with the other team basically you could end up using important cds for no reason while also dealing with its latency in which the cds take to activate it.

  5. Hi, Completionist here. Loved Achievement Grinding in FFXIV. Top 10 on my server, Top 100 on my DC, Top 1000 Global. Stopped playing in Endwalker after trying to do the Frontline 300 win achievements on every Grand Company (even I wasn't crazy enough to attempt 1000.) Getting 3 wins a day would line up perfectly with the Supply/Provisioning Turnin Achievements.

I only got to around 450/900 before burning out. Stopped playing the game entirely. Playing PvP in FFXIV after playing PvP in WoW is a form of Self-Harm. I hated every day that I logged in.

I'm so glad you brought up the attack delays, because it feels so abysmally awful. 6.1 PvP combat is supposed to be snappy and reaction based: Low health pools, big damage burst/LBs, but everyone has the ability to heal, guard, and purify themselves. The problem is that the game feels needlessly punishing for things you have absolutely zero control over. Its entirely about predicting things before they happen and then acting on them. Predictive. Not Reactive. Oh, is that DRK + DRG duo about to dive in? I sure hope you popped Guard before the plunge, otherwise Omae wa mou shindeiru.

  6. being hardcore player cant make you casual and in this ideo you act as a all out hardcore player witgh zero sign of being a causal so it bs lying that you are a casual. graffic are fine ,the delay in combat is a issue in the code and i doubt it can be fixed otherwise it woud have been done . job in most mmo on low lv feel like shit it just the game lvs you up insanely fast unike ffxiv.USING A LOT OF PLAYERS WHILE IN FACT TALKING ABOUT A SMALL MINORITY OF PLAYERS IS JUST LYING.FFXIV greatess strenght is the story and to ignore it is beyond stupid the ppl who dont want to do story are te hardcore raiders and not even most of the so at top 2% of the playerbase a irellevant number ,ffxiv gearing isnt meant to be fomo and toxic like wow where it make youaddicted ot get it that the whole point for it you cn chose to get it but you dont need it it worst in wow where you are force to raider or you be 120+ item rating low and any raid can kill you. you einter view point come from RIADERS VIEW BUDDY NOT EVENT 5% OF THE PLAYERS RAID IN THIS MMORPG THIS DOESNT EFFECT THE 85% OF CASUAL PLAYERS AT BEST IT HURTS THE 10% MIDCORE PLAYERS TOO BUT THAT NOT IMPORTANT SINCE EW IS THE FIRST EXPANTATION THAT POST EXPANTION CONTENT CATERS TO CASUAL PLAYERS NOT MIDCORES UNLIKE SB AND SHB .

  7. Tbh CC is "kinda okay" for FF14 PvP (is also not good) but Frontline? This is the worst PvP i ever play in a MMO, you feel all the problems FF14 PvP in his most extrem way, the gameplay feels way to slow for a 24vs24vs24 PvP

  8. I already said it in Desperius' video, but I'll reiterate it anyway:

Personally, I don't mind that they agree to disagree about the aesthetics of the game. No one game will appeal to all peoples.

For instance, I said in Desperius' video that I'm an Asian in an Asian country raised on Asian sensibilities and played Asian-made games.

But then, I still vastly preferred European and medieval Europe aesthetics. It's why WoW appealed to me, and why I took so long to play FFXIV—because it was only in the tail-end of Shadowbringers and the Endwalker trailer did I see medieval European armor I wanted to wear on my character.

Even then, however, I wasn't too particularly sold on the stylized, somewhat anime-esque aesthetic that FFXIV just naturally has being an Asian-made MMO.

That said, what I found erroneous in Desperius' video is that—on the topic of aesthetics—he brought up Mt. Gulg, which was a Shadowbringers dungeon zone. I found it unfair because Asmongold never got to see those zones for himself.

If Desperius wanted to defend FFXIV's graphics, he should've taken Asmon's place in the MSQ into account and found zones in Stormblood that looked aesthetically better and with higher fidelity—rather than a zone deep in an expansion that Asmon had never even got to experience for himself

  9. 21:44 I know you said that "you dont care what anyone sais" BUT i would still say that there a lot of people (myself included) that do fights just for the sake of doing them.
When it comes to gear in a game like FF my only concern is "Is it good enough" to do a specific encounter. Same for Retail WoW but in that game i dont even care about the bosses that much.
Transmog/Glam is my NO1 priority to do when it comes to FF and Retail (mainly FF) outside of combat.
My brain is always "OK I have done the Story, Raids that I wanted now what is the new glam and where do i get them. But granted there should be a reward for those encounters but that doesnt mean its the only/main reason why everyone does them. I mean look at someone like Echo or Xeno (They do the fights because they want to do the fights not because of the new shiny at the end of it).
The only game where Gear matters to me is Classic Hardcore because it matter trough out the entire leveling/endgame experience while also being unique with different stats, effects, trinkets hey even enchants, food buffs, engineering and so on contribute to that.

  10. Thank you for talking about whats actually wrong with ff14. You fell into the trap at the end as it's not the lack of bozja, it's not the lack of a relic grind. It's fundamental game coding and combat mechanics as well as continued simplification and homogenisation.

Graphics wise I'm huffing copium that 7.0 will look good, I use mods anyway it doesn't matter to me but it really does need a glow up.

  11. Unironically I like the combat, depending on the class you play it can be very fast, ninja and monk for example. Ninja you are swapping between mudra and normal combo buttons. Monk is literally designed to be sanic fast with having a shorter cooldown on globals than any other job, take that into positional, stances, and your combo you've got a pretty fast snappy job there too.

Even though I prefer to tank which is slower compared to ninja and monk, (Gunbreaker main BRRRRRR). I dont mind the slow button pressing, cause in dungeons im making sure the enemy's aggro doesn't hit the rest of my party, aoe spamming to keep threat (yes, you CAN lose threat on mob packs if you dont aoe, I've seen it happen while not tanking and it hurt my soul.) And using defensive cooldowns properly on top of doing your combo spam keeps me engaged enough as a tank. I know for dps and healers it can get kinda boring since all you're doing is sitting back/up close and spamming your attacks, but the combat feels more engaging as a tank main. That's just my experience, anyways. Everyone is different.

  12. Considering the Final fantasy series has been going on for so long and built up a big fan base, a lot of its players likely dont care about a lot of these "bad takes". They are going to play the game anyway due to playing and enjoying others in the series. Then they end up sticking around after the msq because they are then attached to the world as a whole.

do you think someone would stop loving their "ugly" child? obviously not, it doesnt matter.

  13. The input lag is noticeable for me, but it's not to that extent that I'd say it's not as satisfying as Asmon says. To me seeing the animation is cool, but it comes with the animation lock and the lag and so I end up accepting the input delay for what it is. What gets me annoyed to the point of frustration with the battle system is snapshotting. I hate how I will clearly make my way out of a telegraphed attack only to get hit by it because I was in the range of the attack a split second before the enemy's cast timer finished. I mean, in fairness, I have shitty ping, but for a game which is focused heavily on moving around to solve mechanics, for it to be a bit more friendly when it came to that part.

  14. 6:25 – Desperius literally strengthened Asmongold's argument with that example. Heck, he could have still used Mt. Gulg and used the later areas, where it's a white marble and gold "palace" like envrionment. Still not the greatest example.. but a heck of a lot better.

I could list off a bunch of dungeons from ARR and all expansions, that demonstrate how diverse, vibrant and detailed FFXIV dungeons are.
Why Desperius decided "big brown boulders" was the best example to counter Asmon's argument is beyond me.

He literally made Asmon's argument for him.

  15. 1:50 this part i disagree on the fact that ther isnt one mmo that has high end graphics.

Imo its related to the game genre. The mmo part brings such a massive scale that its very hard to do that graphic level.

So, comparing mmorpgs to rpgs is a bad take.

  16. While the input lag is annoying at first, you do get used to it. Maybe this is stockholm syndrome or something but I kinda like it now. Also, re: level synching: I do not believe that 90 > 80 > 70 > 60 > 50. Doing synched coils for example presents interesting problems that don't exist at level 90. Healing T13 is actually a lot harder than healing most content at level 90 for example, including DSR and TOP. Having fewer resources means you have to get more creative about how you use them. For a DPS, maybe higher level = better content because you just have more damage buttons to press, but at least for support roles, I actually find interesting challenges at lower levels. Also the variety is nice. Expert roulette gets fucking boring, doing the same dungeons at the same level.

  17. Your points about the half-second delay and the "Rhythm Game" raiding are both why I stopped enjoying the game. I cleared TEA and UCOB in ShB and did Abyssos week 2 and realized I didn't enjoy the dance and puzzle mechanics. It started feeling not like an RPG to me anymore when every mechanic was a binary pass/fail. Granted, lots of the final savage and ultimate fights are like this, but, there were less moments where you could really do something awesome like UCOB where you could salvage a scuffed Nael, for instance.

I just got tired of the dance. Tired of getting one piece of gear that boosted my main stat by 19 and gave me an extra .4% DPS and an extra 170 HP. There was nothing exciting about that to me anymore. There wasn't a set bonus for getting a certain number of pieces of raid gear that gave me a proc or some other cool enhancement, just a small increase to flat stats.

The half-second delay that plagues the entire game is also a pain. In Eden's verse I had to interrupt adds as a Tank and my Interrupt would always be delayed for like 1/4th of the cast bar. Reactive play just doesn't work in this game and it especially is near-impossible in PVP.

These two things combined with there not being a Eureka/Bozja zone to provide midcore grindy content that took the battle system in a different way was the nail in the coffin for me.

  18. so maybe my perspective is different maybe biased because ffxiv is the only mmo i could ever get into because it doesnt ask much of your time but i thought gridania and parts of la noscea was beautiful for a ps3 game and i started on ps4. of course now i play on pc and i see a big difference with filters but i do see the potential in the visuals. dohn mheg is a dungeon imo further shows . whats possible and elpis just looks amazing to me and pretty. of course the zones of ffxiv need more in them than just fates imo but thats a different critique altogether.
the delay aspect. as a person whos east coast i definitely feel it. sometimes i feel like i have to move a bit earlier which messes up my greeding. but i guess ive come to accept this problem with ffxiv gameplay. im hoping they fix this in the future but who knows.

one thing though i like doing is adjusting my rotation with buffs because without a static lots of buffs just go misaligned. This will make it a lot different to me depending.

Finally i think earlier content has become more fun to me by tanking it. because tanking earlier on is way more of a challenge with a new healer. the rule i do is pull fast and if i die i pull smaller. but with food and healing pots it lets me test just how i can survive with a healer who isnt that experienced and its fun but i get why someones new experience early on would be terrible.

ARR when i first did it was slow and boring but now i just see how fast i can do it. i dont know though if this game could balance later skills for older content because some skills are just broken. imagine bloodwhetting in arr that just wouldnt work. same with the crazy mits some healers have. maybe they can bring down damage rotations and just weaken it but that seems like way too much effort. i do think some older content though needs to be synced down just so i can see some of the mechanics again.

other than that i personally do think theres a problem with some of the levels you get certain skills. paladin getting their dash and requiscat phase so late is a crime.
gunbreaker not having Continuation until lv70 sucks too.
and i feel like every class should some form of raid buff and aoe early on. the fact you get aoe gauge for tanks all the way in shb sucks.

but overall i still like stormblood lv70 and higher rotation.

heavensward dungeons i hate the most mainly because theres just not enough dangerous pulls to make it fun.

and i do notice someone can be at full 660 bis gear and i can still outdamage them or their damage is only so slightly more that its not as noticeable. and i have a mix of 650s. but the reason why gearing will never change from what i remember is mainly the jp players

  19. Genuinely don't mind the input 'lag'. It's annoying sometimes because you try to clutch something out, sure. But the very reason it exists is because animations have to occur, and that 0.5-0.7 lock (sadly based on ping) prevents us from mashing out 5 ogcd's instantly. It puts pressure on the player to think ahead of their 'weave slots', and that just creates gameplay in and of itself too.

  20. People who complain about the low contrast or colors shouldn't be taking screenshots during night or gloomy weather. You should also probably invest in a spyder and actually calibrate your display properly, and instead of buying a 240hz monitor with a shitty display panel invest in a proper professional grade IPS or OLED screen.

  21. It's all about bottlenecks in the end. FFXIV has to work for consoles and has a specific spec it needs to work for. WOW is PC only and thus has a wider range of specs it can work for.
