FFXIV – Using D&D to Predict the Next Job

With the new Job announcement right around the corner, what better time to speculate on what it could be, and what better material to use as inspiration than Dungeons and Dragons? More specifically the rogue subclasses. Final Fantasy has always taken inspiration from the iconic table top game, will they do it again? And what kind of job could we expect if they do?

  1. It is interesting to see common threads between these jobs to kind of see what could be the gimmick of the new class.

First there is NPC assisting. You see this with the clone idea of Illusionist, the recruiting ability of orator, and the pirate crew of the Corsair, you didn't mention it with Necromancer but making zombies could be a thing, and hunter could have animal npcs to help. But Final Fantasy XIV is already too cluttered and chaotic visually to add whole a whole bunch of NPCs running around. Maybe if they toned them down a lot, but then it wouldn't even feel right.

Next is poisons. Assassin, Thief, Hunter, and Necromancer all seem to incorporate poisons. But I don't really see that happening considering the trajectory of the game. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if Bard gets their dots taken away at some point.

Finally persistent AOEs. Theif's preparations, Hunter's traps, and Specters wells. I think this is the best candidate for the next gimmick. Dropping down AOEs that do different things could be cool. Some hurt enemies some help allies. The game has Dark Knight's Salted Earth and Ninja's aoe. That's it. Not sure what the class would be called. Trapper?

    Anyway it's fun to theorize.

  2. I am currently finishing FFXIV DnD campaign, with tokens for every npc and maps '(when you read EVERY npc dialog, this game is dark…ul'dah citizens need a hobby outside of murder and gossip)
