I've had a lot of conversations with some friends that used to play WoW, but have since moved to FFXIV and are hooked by the story. One that I've discussed everything with has felt as I do: that WoW's faction conflict has been so contrived, pointless, and in the end detrimental to their ability to tell a coherent narrative by having to put everything back to the "status quo" every expansion for over a decade at this point. Through Mists of Pandaria we were constantly presented with characters telling the main players (which, ironically, were NOT the PC most of the time) how stupid the ongoing circular Horde/Alliance war was. How much more cohesive a story could they have told if they didn't have to constantly tell two different narratives to two different factions of players that can't interact with each other after MoP?
ARR ending is good, but wait until you get to heavensward. Shadowbringers is also pretty amazing.
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts about FFXIV/ARR.
Been playing the game since day 1 but seeing others react and experience this for the first time is really nice to see and hear as theres always a unique opinion or point of view in each of us.
Glad you are enjoying XIV I just got to 4.0 myself. I highly recommend doing coils before 3.0, go in unsync with Max if you cannot find a party for sync.
It's opportunity cost. Going in all in gameplay is great, but at a certain point pushing harder on gameplay doesn't enrich the game as much as putting that extra work into other parts of the game. In WoW's case they neglect the story to a fault. It also doesn't help that their attempts to further improve gameplay have a tendency to not be fun recently.
Good luck with the run to Endwalker – Take it all in 🙂 I only wish I could experience everything again for the first time too….
Also, we're all gonna want some recordings of your reactions to the story as they occur so keep that in mind if you can.
probably one of the biggest misconceptions wow players have when they come over to ffxiv the true endgame is the journey.. well and glam too..
If WoW simplifies, and they do it poorly, they risk turning into New World.
I always chuckle at talking point like "what if blizzard wasn't blizzard".
Bellular thinks he knows. Get through Shadowbringers and then you'll know. I'm actually excited to see so many people playing it. It feels like I'm playing it for the first time all over again.
Do Bahamut coils before getting into HW. Sync'd or Unsync'd. The story in it is extremely important to ARR and the game. Pieces the final mystery of everything and has the coolest cut scene in video games if you get far enough.
ARR is underrated it sets up everything great u love in future expansions, it sets up characters, had tones of end game content, and amazing post story, that is still some of my fav in the game. sure the actual gameplay is lacking, but wot u expect its early lvl stuff.
your editor deserves a fucking medal for 22:30
Blizzard really wants to tell a story that doesn't center around the story. It worked really well when we were nobodies in vanilla WoW and BC and wrath, but since they forced us onto the center stage, it's like they regret it, and so they tell a story everywhere the player isn't about people who aren't the player. And they try to get away with this by calling us "Maw Walker" and "champion" and whatnot. We need to be nobodies again.
even though ARR is 8 years old it still has very challenging content you're going to love it Michael 😆
An example of a game that sacrifices gameplay for superb storytelling is the original NieR: Gestalt/Replicant (2010). It ended up as an underground favorites for diehard fans while most of the world doesn't even know it exists until NieR: Automata salvaged the franchise with superb gameplay and equally good storytelling.
We got him boyz! XD
personally i think the end of 2.5 is complete dogshit. there's no real world political reason why the blades would have gotten away with everything they did leading to the final moments
So, fun fact. In the time between 2.5 and Heavenswards launch, random NPCs would have specific dialogue about not believing the rumors about you, how they still support you for all you've done, and even guards in Ul'dah if you went back telling you to keep your head down while they look the other way. It's a nice little touch
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
I agree that WoW should not try to compete story wise. Right now it seems like they are trying to do story, but are doing it badly? And the systems are not really supporting their game play first ideology because they are bad game play. WoW has a few things it's good at (like raid design), that if you are into that particular thing, you're probably fine. But most things it just feels like it's executing poorly on. So, I'm not sure how much it would even succeed at being the theme park.
Very glad you are enjoying the game but please do coils before going into Heavensward. Go in unsync with Max if you have to.
Actual ending is Coils.
Oh boy…if he thought what he was seeing was good, his head is gonna melt now, never mind in 5.0
For me it was the questing of the patches that made them a chore despite the story getting really good.
The crystal braves story? Damb good.
Doing the quest to recruit people by talking to 5 npc on all three cities? FUCK NO!!
and the sudden crystal tower forcing itself right near the climax was really pushing me close to the breaking point.
Normally i would give ARR a solid 7.5 but there is a thorn in my side that im still salty as hell about
I see dungeons and trails as the gameplay climax of narrative points, so my enjoyment of those dungeons enchance or diminish my enjoyment of story asociated with them.
Why do i explain this? Because Castrum meridianum and Preatoriun CAN GO TO HELL!!
Its not fun to be a part of a farm parade.
Ist not fun to have bosses die so fast that ALL the mechanics can be ignored.
Is not fun to get lost abd left behind.
Is not fun to have a 10 minute cutscene building up a 1 minute boss fight SEVERAL TIMES.
Its just not fun, even as a new player the experience was misserable.
Because those two dungeons totally ruined the climax of 2.0 for me, i rate ARR a 6 to 6.5 at most
And at this point, because of that specific series of cutscenes …every time, EVERY SINGLE TIME you see the words "[…]several cutscenes will play in sequence. It is recommended that you set aside sufficient time to view these scenes in their entirety", you will recoil back to this and mentally brace yourself for what is to come.
He's coming to the realization that "Oh shit… FFXIV is exactly what I want out of an MMO and Blizzard has truly let their own game die…"
WELCOME TO EORZEA, MY FRIEND! It only gets WAY better! Shadowbringers, as a base and entire narrative, will blow you away!
FFXIV >>>> WoW by a long shot, in all aspects
Knew when you enjoyed the first bit as much as you did you would get hooked lol Glad you are enjoying the game! Strap in it gets crazy from here!
give your editor a raise
That Bozja theme smacking hard.
"A smile better suits a Hero…"

If I'm not mistaken Raubahn turning red (and maybe the roar?) is explained in the Warrior quest line.
