FFXIV SCIONS/CITY LEADERS from a WORLD OF WARCRAFT ROLEPLAYER'S perspective?! (SPOILERS FOR FFXIV)

Hey all!

NOTE: Shadowbringers spoilers for FFXIV in this video!

As I said in my last video, I’ve played World of Warcraft for over a decade and roleplayed on the game for years on Horde Wyrmrest Accord. I left WoW in February because Shadowlands wasn’t working for me in terms of story (that’ll get it’s own video).

I have now completed the main expansion of Shadowbringers, so I wanted to make a video. On my first impressions, I didn’t address the Scions or Grand Company leaders! That being a sin, of course, I wanted to dedicate an entire video of gushing over them.

I stumble a lot, so I apologize, but that’s how I am. I hope you enjoy it! Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. If you wanna know more about the Raen Au Ra, you might want to level a crafting or gathering job. You can do custom deliveries for them, and get to know their culture a bit better that way. I only found out recently too. Great stuff

  2. I definitely think there's a lot to be said for the added context that is 1.X and ARR. Even for us new players who weren't around in 1.X, the fact that the scions have clearly have shared history before you and that they've already tried, failed and suffered together goes a long way to explaining their behaviors.

For thancred, minfilia was the crux of most of his adult life and a driving force for everything he did. Their history goes back 20 years, to her youth when he was involved in the event that led to her parents death (something he blamed himself for). To finally have to come to terms with moving on without her, especially when she was still technically there but choosing to die must've been profoundly heartbreaking. He seems to have also finally admitted to having romantic feelings for her, though much too late to act on them and he knew it. So when he chose to stay and stop ranjeet, he knowingly gave up his last chance to see her again and tell her how he felt, or even say goodbye. Honestly I'm not surprised he couldn't bear to grow fully attached to Ryne at first.

Papalymo and Yda being separated was likewise tragic, the two were inseparable for years, and Lyse embracing the family history she'd been running from all those years while also somehow having to be her own person without Papalymo at her side must've made the experience utterly overwhelming and confusing. She had to pull 10 years of maturation out of her ass in a few months, in the middle of a way, while people were dropping like flies.

Also you meet Alisaie in early ARR, and then again in the coils of bahamut raids. It sets up a lot about her disagreements with Alphinaud and her own personal arrogance and hang-ups. In many ways Coils is her story arc.

Kan e Senna is a padjal, like her siblings. Padjals are magically gifted mutants, born of regular kids as go betweens between man and elemental, given that the elementals fundamentally don't think, perceive or communicate as people do. The padjal remain young looking throughout their extended lifespans and Kan e Senna actually looks like a child too, she just uses glamors to look older so she'll be taken more seriously in international politics. The whole lore of how the gridanians entered a pact with the elementals is very interesting, considering the previous conflict between elemental and Gelmorra (underground city state, the ruins of which wind beneath the black shroud).

  3. Hey, about Alisae, you actually do meet her before Heavensward in ARR, The Binding Coil of Bahamut raid. It's not toooo major but it does set up a nice chunk of character development for her, as well as reveal a lot of lore about Bahamut and her grandfather in the opening cinematic. Let's just say that Alisae was kind of meek, in some ways even more so than Alphinaud before the events of Heavensward. Her pulling out a sword was definitely a wow moment! I recommend just watching the cutscenes from the raid somewhere.

  4. You realy shouldnt have skipped ARR.YOu shouldve done ARR and blue !+ quests alongside main story quests and also after finishing ARR before going into HW shouldve done ALL The Binding Coil of Bahamut raid it adds alot of story and set up the stuff that later on will be revisited or will add more to the stuff.WRITTER of FF14 stated that people shouldnt skip specific story tied raids and some side stories bcs they set up things and are part of/add stuff to the main story and she said that people who didnt do it should deffinetly do it so they could understand or be more fammiliar yo certain things and callbacks that happens in Shadowbringers and especialy in Endwalker.

  5. This is facinating. I couldn't stop laughing when you mention somewhere along the line of Thancred being mean and weird to Minfilia in Shadowbringer. And how you looked at Alphy being who he is with strong sense of morality. I agree with you 100% on that observation if you take out that ARR references. I look forward to your next video after finishing ARR.

  6. Watching content and loving to see WoW refugees like me gush over the game. I could also see that you were nervous throughout the entire clip, the way you are fidgeting. Glad to hear you are enjoying the game! Hope Endwalker will be just as awesome.

  7. I would recommend restarting and playing from the start if ur going to continue doing lore. Having that personal experience is just too vital for this type of content. The smirks, and glances the sidestories etc. All that could help formulate opinions.

  8. Going to do a video on why exactly I skipped ARR next, rather than villains quite yet! This will put into perspective why I made that decision. I want to reiterate, I will be doing ARR at some point on an alt (Because I'm an alt-aholic) to learn the lore! So rest assure, I will return with my thoughts on it when I do so.

  9. The reason why thancree is obsessed/torn with minfilia/rin is because he feels responsible for minfilia father's death and so swore to protect minfilia, and since Rin is a reincarnation of minfilia but minfilia was still a part of hydaelyn thancree was torn between this new girl and the one he loved(as family)

  10. Kan-E-Senna and the other horned Hyur-like people are a rare race called the Padjali. According to the lore; long ago, the Hyur migrated to the Tweleveswood, war broke out between them and the native Elezen over territory. the elementals weren't too keen on this forcing Hyur & Elezen to team up and build the underground city of Gelmorra (one of the early dungeons in ARR called Tam-Tara Deepcroft). One day, a Hyur decided to commune with the elementals to broker peace and he succeeded granting him a blessing.

The people of Gelmorra were once again welcomed to the surface, as long as they respect the forest and live in accordance with nature, unlike the Ixali who were recently banished and so Gridania was built. Mean while Lightheart, the Hyur who made peace with the elementals (and was founder of the Conjurer's guild) had a baby, who was born with horns, aged incredibly slowly and could hear the elementals, thus commune with them much easier.

They were the first of the Padjali, who are rarely born from Hyur parents, but are technically a distinct race and serve as emissaries between the Elementals and man. Because of their canonical rarity and duty to the Twelveswood (and their child-like appearance) their not playable and probably never will be.

  11. Abou Kan-E-Seena, those are not her children, but her brothers and sister. She is the oldest. I could explain what they are and what is their importance, but you can find all the information about them from the White Mage Job quests (which I highly recommend! The White mage story is a rollercoaster of emotions!)

  12. I think the role playing is probably the best parts about games like WoW and Final Fantasy (online ones). Same can be said for games like dark souls and Skyrim.

Going back as a new character with a "new story" is pretty epic. Nice take on it!
