FFXIV Old graphics and new updated graphics comparison. (PS5) (A few Ilberd related cutscenes )

This was more so a small passion project since Ilberd’s my favourite character in FFXIV and I wanted to see how he changed in the new graphical update.

All Settings on my PS 5 and the game are the same as before the graphical update.

Look how they massacred my sloppy boy

  1. very disappointing, even in-game its barely noticeable. The only time it is noticeable is when you find a very low res texture next to a high res texture, you can find those on most walls like pillars in front of the new city. It's just disappointing overall

  2. Wait I get the graphics are more flushed out but the ligbting?….hiw are the models still lit up like spot lights in a dark of nigbt…even spot lights can't cast that much on all sides

  3. FYI there's an option called "character lighting" that's been exist since 2.0 but has change the default to be turned on.

It's good for readability but to get more natural lighting, this should be off. It's a slider BTW.

  4. Those putting down comments about "Put your character lighting slider to 0, you idiot!"

Character Lighting slider is for your personal WoL only. (It even says so in the game next to the slider.)
Plus mine's already on 0 since I started the game.
Thanks for the tips, but that's most certainly not the issue here!

EDIT: I've just rewatched a scene with slider on 100, then turned to 0. It didn't do anything. Might want to upload that kind of video later once I've progressed more of DT ^^7

  5. Seeing these new graphics makes me more vindicated that this game is going to die. Not just because of this but taking us to the edge of the universe to stop the very end of the world then sending us to a backwater island to settle a succession dispute is just plain insulting. I have washed my hands of this game if people are smart they'll do the same.

  6. Thank you for making this video! It's neat to see how the graphical update changed some of the old quest cutscenes. Hopefully they get around to fixing the old quest cutscenes to make the new graphics match to the old graphic's style.

  7. I see a lot of comments complaining about the increased lighting and I can see where they're coming from. While I do like that you can see more details on the characters now, lighting it up too much loses much of the gravitas in the scenes. I'm glad to hear there is a slider that allows the individual player to adjust it to their liking. Looking forward to experiencing it myself once I have a computer that can run it with the new system requirements.

  8. I think the problem here is the same as the first benchmark, the light in the cutscenes is different from the light in the world, and with the updates of how models react to light it doesn't work anymore
I hope they go back and fine tune old cutscenes to better suit the mood

  9. im not excusing anything, but the game has been playable for nearly 14 years now? and they tried to improve the visuals, wow did the same thing, its no different, you can't make a finished product a brand new product, its older than some of the people playing it, I stop caring about the graphics after better looking games came out and asked myself do I enjoy this game more than those games? and the answer was yes.

  10. I get the impression that these older cutscenes dont have the graphical update applied because this is not showing the level of graphical improvement on our characters or in the game world at all. In this video 90% of the Old and New footage looks the same, and in many cases Old looks better. New just looks like you put your brightness up to 1000. Check out Kan-E-Senna's staff at 6:10 for example – no graphical improvement whatsoever.

  11. Makes me think of old 80s TV Star Trek TNG Season 1 lighting. Lighting on characters that don't exist in world, and sometimes good, and sometimes off.

  12. That's pretty disappointing. I liked the old version because the lighting direction was much more consistent with the atmosphere and highlighted the important characters. The new one feels washed out…

  13. There's no denying the graphics are better, but not a fan of scenes that are supposed to be dark and dramatically lit, suddenly being lit like the set of a sitcom or something ^^;

  14. Yeah…I don't like it. I wish there was an in-game brightness feature or something. Everything looks excessively shiny, and those colours are oversaturated. WIthout the subtle darkness from the original, it loses that cinematic environmental feel. Now it's just "OMG WHY IS EVERYTHING SO VISIBLE?!"
It's like SE wanted us to see absolutely everything instead of using artistic sense to keep some things subtle.
Plus, except for cutscenes, the NPC's faces all look, well, more detailed yes, but also badly expressed, like they're irritated, tired, annoyed, bored, sad, angry, nothing bright and cheery.

  15. What I've surmised is that there was always a dim lightsource attached to the camera in this scene because some areas would end up being WAY too dark due to the fact that there was only allowed one major light source per scene. The type of dim lightsource you'd find in group pose.

But because they changed the lighting system globally, the light is more visible. It's made the light source display more accurately to what it should be given the strength, and in turn causing it to be too apparent.

If you compare both shots, particularly when the camera is behind Teleji's head, it's lit up similarly like on his braid. It only looks fine because they previously designed the lighting manually for the scene. That and the chandelier lighting in tandem probably makes it so too strong as it's displaying differently than before.
