Patch 5.5 gave us alot of Main Story material and hints for Endwalker, but none more in my eyes than the info we got about Zenos and his new mystery weapon.
What seemed like a simple scene gave us more than you think!

So… I'm just watching this because my partner wanted to show me. In all honesty I think it's an axe, hood man said he never expected blondie to choose the weapon. You can already just see the major difference if it was an axe, and the way it's used is extremely different. When you think about a katana you think, sleek, slashes, quick cuts on light agile feet. When you think axe you think heavy full-body swings, hacking, deep gashes, and something not so elegant. From what I can tell blondie is a prince or high in society figure to be in a palace, axes arent really a weapon of anyone in a high ranking. The audio too, to me it sounds to short to be a long weapon.
My ideal is for us to have a scythe weapon that uses the element of light while zenos uses a scythe weapon that uses power of darkness. It would turn the trope that scythe = darkness on its head, and would be a bit more interesting since no dps class really uses light element and adding one now when a big theme is light vs dark would be a good idea. Zenos previously was a samurai, but was a twisted form of it. A Samurai's blade is seen as an extension of their soul, the fact he had a duffle bag of different katana shows that although he was technically a samurai it was opposite philosophically. I think this will continue with the new job, where it will be very similar in most ways, but the idea behind it will be different.
Another possibility is that the new job could have ties to Azem. Ascian culture has a lot of reaper aesthetic. (their attire, their naming sense, etc. ie Ascian Prime looks like a grim reaper, and Hades is literally the name of the god of the underworld) I could see a job focused around Azem and the other Ascians to explore that lore leading up to the climatic battle of H vs Z.
It be cool if they took some inspiration from Sice when it comes to animations.
Scythe makes the most sense to me for various reasons. As you mentioned, the sound it makes seems closer to a Scythe or at least a more "uneven" bladed weapon. What I mean by that is a weapon that is not comparable to a Katana or any other weapon with a rather straight/even blade. When Zenos' pulls out the Katana, the sound it makes is pretty even/cohesive, whereas when he pulls out the mystery weapon, the sound is more uneven/chaotic, which makes sense considering the shape of a Scythe.
However, that's not the only thing supporting this theory. Endwalker, from everything we've seen so far, heavily follows in the footsteps of FF4. Our character has just finished his job as a "Warrior of Darkness" (Dark Knight) on the First. In Endwalker Derplander (aka the representation of our character) is now shown to be a Paladin, which means we're following in Cecil's foot steps to go from Dark Knight to Paladin. Why? Because we're going to be the antithesis to Zenos, who's going to be a Scythe-wielding "something".
Damn I hoped he will be a dancer… my friend you just got served!
I dont think it's going to be a scythe. The sound makes me think it will still be a sword of some kind. Plus if it was a scythe the way zenos picked up the weapon and the camera's angle we would have seen the shaft of a scythe, spear, or great axe
Lol, Fandaniel is hillarious
If I may say so myself just look at the demographic of the weapons we do see in the room… most of them are tank weapons. Know in ff11 drk was dps, in ff14 its a tank. Now for those of us who played ff11 drk could roll either greatsowrd or scythe… enough said đ
I just thought it could be a paladin dps, maybe because I hope for a scythe and I'm a pessimist :'D
If it's a scythe the angle he pick it ups from is kind of weird. It would be anchored into the ground, so to remove it he'd have to twist it, not just pull it like the katana. Most likely animation economy, as the sound is the exact same as Ranjit's scythe.
Though all that emphasis on it screams red herring to me. Zenos might have a scythe, but it doesn't mean we will.
Hey, I like how much effort you put into this. I like this kind of speculations. But I see one major flaw in your theory:
Unless itâs an ridiculously immense scythe it will hardly be larger than an katana. The sound you described and that was heard would also make no sense. The other weapons are stuck into the ground, thus making this âdrawingâ sound. I canât imaging a scythe stuck to the ground. At least not with itâs blade. And when it is stuck to the ground with itâs shaft the sound wouldnât be a blade one. And another point would be the animation (which could be false because of budget). But even when the scythe would have a huge blade, which was stuck to the ground, the animation should be like picking something flat up and not pulling out King Arthurâs new blade.
But I am no one making theories and you clearly put more effort into this than when I watched the cutscene. But right now it doesnât look like a scythe to me. We will know soon enough and until then I enjoy more theories.
Greetings!
it's a pom pom and the new job is cheerleader.
It is a scythe for sure. I once lived in an old house that was over 100 years old and in the shed they left an old rusted Scythe. The back of the blade was thick but the rest of the blade was rather thin. I used to run around with it and whack trees. Even when hitting a tree the blade had a very unique resonance. I mean also consider all the other clues we got from Yoshi-P. đ
Sounds metallic, and the ring is more dense than the Masamune's ring. But just so we're clear, all metal will ring or "shing" with a proper strike to it's resonate tone. For all we know, he picked up a pitch fork or a giant metal spoon.
I still think its a hammer.. I think zenos next weapon is not the new melee job weapon I think the scythe is zenos next weapon, but the new melee job in EW will wield a hammer…. and the grim reaper stuff is indeed hinting zenos next weapon, but not the new melee weapon as in FFIV cid use a hammer and if they are going by ffiv style theme I say a melee job that wears maiming gear would wield a hammer not scythe cause scythe and maiming gear doesn't match up hammer and maiming does. Viking job ?
Sounds like axe but, slowed down
Scythe would be such a dissapointment
you literally see the scythe and the cutscene and Yoshi p shirt on with the picture of death
Everything points at Scythe.
A weapon he wants to "Test" [implying that it's a weapon he hasn't used before], Fandaniel's "seeds have been sown" comment [one thing you use for this are sickles or scythes], Fandaniel's other comment that the weapon "looks apt on him" [what better weapon for this grim reaper-like character that causes death wherever he goes than a scythe], Yoshida with shirts involving hooded skelletons [like the usual depiction of the grim reaper], Ran'jit's transformed form being one of the big characters that coincidentally uses a scythe, alongside with the fact that one location we're going to in Endwalker follows Ran'jit's naming style and clothing [Ran'jit's boss form being based on Golbez from FFIV and Endwalker has a ton of FFIV references], the fact we flatout SEE the long slender handle of a weapon in the Endwalker teaser suggesting that the weapon is quite long [the only long weapons like that are Warrior's Axes and Dragoon's Lances and not of those "fit" Zenos].
Quite literally everything is implying and pointing at the weapon being a scythe.
I would say that sound sounds more like he is unsheathing something
Fandaniel talks about a harvest and seeds in his pontificating, then says that the choice is "Surprising but appropriate". Seems another hint on scythe.
Also, great vids. Just found you and subbed and turned my FC on to you. Keep making what you're making.
