Speed stats never specify that they work on abilities’ DoTs and HoTs at all, but it appears that they do! In that case, is it Skill Speed or Spell Speed? This and much more, we put to the test on this episode of FFXIV Mythbusters!

18:00 Are you commenting on which are magical DoTs or physical DoTs? Because I can list all the healer DoTs as well as BLM’s Thunder spells as being magical…
Can you mythbust…if you apply intervention and THEN pop rampart or sentinal does it still apply the extra 10 percent mit or does rampart or sentinal already need to be up when you apply the intervention? Lol hope that question makes sense. I thoight as Iong as its up when the dmg goes out it would work, regardless if intervention was used befor or after rampart/sentinal
That first one I came to basically the same conclusions. The game is not built to handle multiple counters, so it prioritizes Vengeance. Game wasn't built for a lot of things really.
When it comes to 7th: is it known how is chocobo classified? I know you can partner with it but i wonder if it does anything. Is companion classified as pet?
Paladins magic combo scales with spell speed. At least they used to, I haven’t tested it in a while, but I am pretty sure it still is that way. During shadow bringers with a high enough sks requiescat was only worth using for confittior or if you weren’t going to be in melee with the boss. The additional spells added in shadowbringers made sks almost entirely terrible on pld and sps feel almost worth it(but not actually worth it) to help with fitting everything into burst, the caveat being it only effects burst and Holy Spirit in your combo.
If you need something to do.
1) Samurai's higanbana DoT. Does shifu weaponskill buff affect DoT?
2) Do you go eureka? The haste ring and earring doesn't have and secondary stat other than haste +3. Is it really better than other sync gear or il300 gear? Some people overmeld crafted il290 accessories. Blitzring price? surprise.
Too lazy to test myself. lol.
I remember unsynching Dzemael solo many times back in the day to get some of the, at the time, unique armor sets. Learned real quick that there was a difference in terminal countdown time.
I didn't know the Arm's Length Vengeance interaction at all!! That could explain why I wasn't seeing slow in the past when I expected it. Very good to know 🙂
I noticed that arm's length didn't apply when l still actively do roulette but never thought about it further. That's interesting information
I kinda wish they'd just merge skill and spell speed. The distinction only matters for, what, 3 jobs? But then again, they definitely designed the kits around that. When I go into Bozja with my haste gear on PLD, fight or flight timing gets super awkward and out of place. So I guess it's fine the way it is
I once heard somewhere that pneuma works more like a hot, because it doesnt propagate, is its healing also affected by spell speed?
Something of note on doomspike prime-up is that you can prime it before the aoe spam starts while the tank is still pulling! Since you’re unlikely to hit every mob with doom spike while everything is moving since line aoes are dumb, that 10% is a bit more free.
I have absolutely put SpS on my RPR before because, as a BLM main, I am committed to the bit. I may or may not have also put it on PLD for the same reasons.
(I will note, I was not stupid enough to take it into any activity where the materia stat gains would actually matter)
Great episode of Mythbusters and great video as always!
Maybe because Vengeance is a Warrior/Marauder ability, it is prioritized before Arm's Length, which is just a role ability. In this case, it could be similar to how shield pop in a specific order based on who placed them, as an example, DRK that used TBN on themselves and a SGE that placed Eukrasian Diagnosis and Haima on that DRK, the TBN will always break first.
That's another good thing to test: Shield priority. I know that self-TBN is prioritized and Galvanize/Eukrasian Diagnosis breaks before Catalyst/Differential Diagnosis, but what about after or if TBN and other shields on another target? Since there can be as many as 10 shields with 5 party members in a normal party (TBN, Shake It Off, Nascent Flash, Eukrasian Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis, Haima, Panhaima, Neutral Sect, Celestial Intersection, and Radiant Aegis/Arcane Crest [both are self only]. Can also add Divine Veil and Brutal Shell with the other tanks and Seraphic Veil from SCH's big fairy and Divine Benison from WHM added for 8 party members for 13 different shields that can stack). I would assume it would be TBN > Eukrasian Diagnosis 1 > ???. The reason for this is that TBN and Eukrasian Diagnosis both have secondary effects if they break and TBN has the shortest duration, so the game prioritizes it first since it would end sooner. The best way to test this is to get the weird party into synced content, have the RPR get aggro, then apply all the shields and see the order they break. I'd test RPR since Radiant Aegis could be considered an ally buff since Carby is the one that places it, though that could be another test at the same time. If the Arcane Crest pops first, then self shields would always pop first. The crit Eukrasian Diagnosis is the only part that is a variable, since Sage doesn't have a Recitation equivalent. Also, the Differential Diagnosis shield would probably function the same as SCH's Catalyst shield from crit Adlo, so that would be 2 birds with one stone. I'd also test with either SCH's Galvanize from Adlo or Succor or Sage's Eukrasian Prognosis to see how they'd order in the stack of shields since they're mutually exclusive to each other. This would also make testing Catalyst/Differential Diagnosis in the shield pop order since you can guarantee crits on the Adlo with Recitation. Haima and Panhaima are also weird in that they are a stacked buff that applies a shield by reducing the stack. Unfortunately, this is a very annoying thing to test myself since I don't have friends.
For a personal guess, after whether the shield itself has an effect on break, it goes by either initial duration, shield size, or role, so shorter duration, smaller shield, or tank/healer/dps first.
On the topic of DoTs at the end, there's a fake boss "DoT" in T7S, Allagan Venom, that ticks every 1.8s or so. Basically it does a raidwide for each player that still has the debuff
A potential thing to test in the next episode: Do gaze mechanics need to propagate their snapshot timings?
By propagate, I mean get processed in succession for one player each tick. Like how player AoEs, like a tank's AoE damage or a healer's shields/regens don't all occur at once.
I used to think that gaze snapshots its check at the same time for all players, like how the enemy's AoEs would. But after seeing the "dodge" flytext appear for me very late in WoD, where there's tons of players to propagate through, and after spending half a year in T7S watching the FX for gaze propagate, I think it does propagate.
Wow, I never would have thought that Arm's length + Vengeance work like that. I just never combined them because i didnt wanna have the mobs attack less often into my vengeance because that would be a dps loss xD
Reaper has a spell. Reaper gets spellspeed. QED.
Not me a WAR main putting spell speed just to flex on the healer just a little bit more
Honestly this has become less of a mythbusting series for me and more of just a “teaching weird mechanics that are useful” series instead. Never realized or even read that skill/spell speed increased the damage of dots. Always thought it was just gcd’s
Hmm. I'm not sure if this is entirely relevant to the myth busting going on, but I don't personally find it worth it to calculate single target potency in AoE pulls. The reality is that when you use moves that do single target damage to one target out of 6, with the exception of mob packs that have one clearly high-HP mob to target with these damage fall-off or single target abilities, you will just end up killing one out of the 6 earlier and still have to make up for the lost time AoEing the other 5 targets. So a lot of the time it's a situation of "Did you do more damage? Yes. But did you also still slow down the run? Also yes." And I find that's particularly important to remember with the dragoon AoE calculations you did in this video. You can technically do more damage and still be slower at clearing mob fights. (Because you effectively "overkill" one mob by doing single target damage and following up with AoE on the remaining targets)
5: Doom spike
Bless you for educating players under guise of "mythbusting".
This isn't something terribly complex, but so many people just. Don't think about it.
I never even considered using vengeance and arms length together, because if you slow the mobs down, they don hit you as often and therefore you don't apply as many counters as you'd do normally, unless i misunderstand how they would work together, if they did
Wow, I totally used Vengeance with Arms Length during megapulls between Raw Intuitions. Had no idea the slow wasn't working. Nobody ever told me 🙁
BRB melding spell speed onto my single target doton ninja build
or people don't check also because its a lot harder to check into things without mods or plugins so people just take their word for it.
Thank you for the math on Doom Spike, but can we just address the elephant in the room and agree that Endwalker's version of DRG is, ironically, the single worst dps in Heavensward content. That's both in single target and aoe. In fact, I'm sure SCH, SGE, and WHM all out-dps DRG in aoe.
ohh, please do a myth on Earthy Star, i swear sometimes it only applies buffs when it's popped for it's effect, not when it's placed, like it should.
if it wants to be placed and popped while buffs are up, it's doable, but only if coordinated a little, because it takes 10 seconds to get max potency, and most party buffs are 15, if it only cares about popping during party buffs, that's fine, and if only during placement, that's excellent.
While not about a Mechanic, maybe someone here can answer a question I got.
Can FCs be Auto Disbanded? I heard that if a Master isn't online for 35 days straight it moves the Master Rank or disband the FC if there is no one else that qualifies for it. Does the later actually happen?
Since we've been told for the better part of 2 years now to take frequent and maybe extended breaks, this should've wrecked quite a few small FCs but I cannot find anyone reporting that and the rules do seem quite harsh so I wonder if they actually apply
