FFXIV | How To Edit Your Final Fantasy XIV Instant Portraits

In todays Final Fantasy XIV guide we are taking a look at the recently updated portrait system which came about in patch 6.2! Unlike the adventurer plate, the portrait system is primarily used for PVP Instant portraits in crystalline conflict. However, this is said to be implemented on other forms of content such as dungeons in the future.

Instant Portraits are tied to individual gear sets and require a few extra steps in order to get them properly sync’d up for use! As it’s not as clearly explained within FFXIV how one goes about doing that; I hope this guide helps to clear up any confusion!

If you have any questions about the portraits, please let me know in the comments bellow and i’ll be happy to help the best I am able!

  1. Ahh I see you struggled with that about as much as I did at first. Because I kept wondering why I couldn't seem to apply an instant portrait to my adventurer plate so it could mix up. Apparently they saw fit to separate it and not give adventurer plates more than one portrait option. Which it's really lame considering how instant portraits ONLY apply for PvP right now. So I'm left there wondering.. what's the point? Here's hoping we eventually get something like a profiles system for adventurer plate so you can have different configurations to match with your current job.

  2. I really wished it wouldn't be so clunky, i admit i just dropped using them altogether because it starts to feel like too much effort to remember to fix it every time i go into pvp and i forgot to unhide my weapon. also i really wished we could choose the order of thegearsets. i am still not sure why crafters & gatherers need a portrait

  3. So this doesn't seem to work for me. My only guess is because I have my weapon glamd to a weapon in my armor chest, and not my glamour plate, but no matter what I do it won't change my gearset on my warrior from the old portrait I had with a glamour plate weapon included. Ill keep messing with it, but following this step by step my warrior portrait wont change at all.

  4. If it still doesn't work for you:
It won't update if you have a glamour plate LINKED to that gearset that is different from your current glamour. The only ways to make it work are to remove the link to the previous glamour plate or link the gearset to the glamour plate you are using at the moment.
Just applying a new glamour while having linked another won't work, the game prioritizes the linked one and, since it doesn't match with the current glamour you're wearing, it'll display the default portrait when you enter the instance.

If you use the same glamour plate for more jobs, let's say scholar and white mage, and said plate has a weapon for the white mage, when you switch to scholar the portrait will display your scholar weapon unglamoured, while on your character it will look glamoured with the last glamour you used, making the portrait look different from your current gear and resulting again in displaying the default portrait in instances.
The solution is the same, unlink the glamour plate from the gearset or remove the weapon from the glamour plate.

I have no idea why they made this choice, I just hope they'll fix it in the near future. A "reflect current gear" button like the one there is in the adventurer plate would make it much more simple. Or making the portrait change automatically to the current gear when you equip it, that'd save you the pain to go update your portrait each time you change glamour.

  5. I don't think you need to turn off/on instant portrait – just need to do that each time you glamour or change a piece of gear (and apparently hide/unhide your hat)… 1. Save Gearset. 2. Edit Portrait (no need to make changes) and Save.
