  1. Edit: Wait wait, hold up, no it’s a different reference to Ultima Weapon. I had been farming Praetorium so hard I haven’t really been in the Ultima Weapon fight in a while so I’d completely forgotten, and even then think more of another reference to it we’ll see much later as of late due to needing to do that fight for a certain series of weapons. ^^;

Whatever, the anime recs still stand idc. Now wishing we could strike through text in YouTube comments tho lmao.

    (Original comment follows:)

Gigi: “To the pinnacle of the heavens”
    Jocat: I understood that reference!
    Dan: I do not.

HAS DAN NOT WATCHED GURREN LAGANN? Oh man, you have to at some point dude! It’s an absolute blast. 😀 also iirc the same studio made Promare which is also amazeballs. Also very gay which makes it more amazeballs imho. :>

  2. As ARR Lahabrea once said: From the deepest pit of the seven hells to the very pinnacle of the heavens, the world shall tremble! Unleash Ultima!

I have to know how Hildi knew about the heart of Sabik/Ultima incantation from the ultima weapon
Or maybe his immense mind just came up with it on the spot

  3. I believe the lalafellian waitres they mention is Tataru herself
You can catch her learning crafter jobs and other side gigs if you visit her at the forgotten knight during MSQ
I didn't know about dancing. Maybe she should pick up the Dancer job instead or Arcanist

  4. I have the mental image of Durmin just standing in the background for all this, quietly munching on pretzels with Victor as they watch the insanity unfold, maybe placing bets with each other on how long till Cyr snaps and just embraces the insanity.

  5. Claims that a certain person cannot possibly have feelings, strangers in dark clothes looking on… It's Organization XIII all over again, isn't it?

Steinbock, curiously, is a German word. What is it doing in mostly-French Coerthus?

Also, if that price really is so priceless, what is it doing standing dangerously close to the edge, in the open, in a market stall? I smell insurance fraud.

  6. some birds actually do change plumage according to their diet! flamingos naturally have quite pale feathers, but they turn the more well-known pink hue because their primary food source is crustaceans

  7. Playfriends, Victor and Durmin have a Gigi to investigate! If you wonder if something is a reference to FF9, the probable answer is yes! This is your Spoiler Free Lore Comment!

Okay, this is a bit of a lie, there are some spoilers today, spoilers for FF9. We'll be talking a bit about Gigi's originator, FF9's Vivi. But we'll put that at the end of the comment so that those who wish to avoid spoilers for FF9 may read on!

Today's quests come from Patch 3.3, which saw players end The Dragonsong War by slaying Nidhogg's Shade (Episode 34 from Durmin's Heavensward journey)

    1:55 – This isn't foreshadowing at all.

8:50 – JoCat is referencing his video Grab Your Friends, and probably used Ishgard as the reference to the "fantasy" background that the teal haired knight/paladin is posing in front of before pivoting to SciFi. It is a very good song and animation – https://youtu.be/RHlVVl1eHVc?si=vEFqHrYiRjTTiFDD

12:20 – I have bad news Cyr, most knights and aristocrats love Chocobo racing. And those that don't tend to love the gil that can be made from gambling.

14:45 – I mean, English names aren't much better. Hey UK viewers, tell us how to pronounce Wymondham. And then tell us how many letters are dropped in that pronunciation.

22:00 – This dialogue is altered for lalafell players. But it also explains why Tataru is so popular.

30:40 – Byrgot is the Eorzean god of craftsmanship, and wields a very large hammer.

30:50 – Ah, one of the few depictions of crafter limit break 3.

31:45 – Orchestrion Player, queue up Tchaikovsky's Fantasy Overture from 'Romeo and Juliet'

36:45 – And yet another depiction of crafter limit break 3!

    FF9 Spoilers:

Vivi Ornitier was a diminutive black mage in FF9, and depicted similar to Gigi wearing the franchise's garb of black mages. Since FF9, most depictions of black mages tend to have some influences from Vivi. Vivi's job isn't just Black Mage, but that is his entire being, as he one of the mass produced combat drones for Alexandria. With a nigh limitless number of magic flinging dolls and their Queen under malicious influence, Alexandria begins a war to dominate the continent. Vivi was accidentally discarded from a supply ship before being found and adopted by Quan. Quan would treat Vivi as a living child, teaching Vivi about the world until Quan's death. This leaves Vivi with the mentality of a child, curious and naïve about the world at large. Vivi would join the adventure after attempting to sneak into a performance of the Tantalus Theater Troupe. During the game, Vivi eventually encounters other Black Mages, realizing most are not sentient. However, he eventually finds a group of awakened Black Mages, where he then learns a terrible limitation of his kind: the expected life span of a Black Mage is roughly 1 year. While it appears that Vivi may last longer than his more newly produced brethren, he is living on limited time. Through his companions, Vivi finds the will and determination to see the adventure to its end, with the closing monologue of the game being his reflection of the importance of using the time you have and the friendships he made in his short life.

Next Time, we discover even more about Gigi!

  8. I believe the quest title "Measure of a Mammet" is a reference to the particularly good episode of Star Trek The Next Generation "Measure of a Man," which is a very interesting exploration of whether or not robots can be people.

  10. Cyr: and… as for the mention of Lady Manderville's-
    high counsel: ignore it
    Cyr: what? but-
high counsel: ignore it! for the safety of all involved, simply let it be… Fury help us if we somehow draw her ire at all…
Cyr: crystal clear sir, already forgotten… mm, nope, still haunting me… crap

  11. This entire side story felt like it had more Simpsons references than usual. I love them all and found the ones in this questline particularly hilarious. Im especially glad Dan is the kind of player to read all the item deacriptions too!

  12. 3:39 Even the 40k Inquisition has shorter names.
11:36 Poor Cyr, he's gonna lose his marbles at this rate.
12:09 Y'know "horsebirdflesh" was not a word I ever expected to hear… but here we are.
    18:21 Ouch, good one.
18:34 They keep saying "Mammet" like we're supposed to know what that is… and I haven't the foggiest beyond "some kind of construct".
21:31 I prefer to let the wave wash over and move on. To observe the chaos, but not be consumed by it.
22:19 Dude, remove foot from mouth. Or don't, it's funny to watch.
24:21 Ah, the denseness and obliviousness of Hildibrand…
27:32 Only the Mandervilles could make a snowball fight lethal…
31:22 That's a sight… the kind that can give nightmares.
33:09 For all the things that make Julyan awkward, I do love how just unimpressed she is right here.
34:29 I mostly agree, the Megumin look does suit Gigi.
37:28 Given how much brain damage he's sustained… I don't know if that's possible. His skull might turn into shrapnel before then.
37:46 The most sane decision he's made all day.
38:39 Now you get it. Sort of.
39:31 This should have been no surprise…

  13. In regards to the pronunciation of "Gigi", JoCat's pronunciation as mentioned at the Jeweled Crozier (like the "gi" in "gil") matches the Japanese transcription of the name (ギギ). However, since it's not mentioned in any voiced cutscenes, there's no precedent for it in the English version.

  14. Considering that we've seen a mechanical vehicle come to "life" (I hope the Empire hasn't done him harm), it's not that hard to believe that Gigi is some kind of mechanical entity and not just a machine. We've seen emotion and a level of self awareness.

  15. Of course, Hildibrand's normal duds are plenty good enough to hold up under the frigid cold of Ishgard. AND Gigi's already taking to the Manderville's particular brand of… quirkiness. A true gentle-bot in the making. Though being a proper full-on Manderville by means of adoption is… ho boy.
