How to catch Lancetfish (and Mora Tecta!) in FFXIV

A short guide on how to catch Lancetfish, a Legendary fish from patch 5.55 of Shadowbringers. This fish is a bit of a bane for fisher’s due to the Fisher’s Intuition requirement of catching 2x Mora Tecta. Adding on its slipperiness and elusiveness, this fish leaves fishers stuck in the Tempest for hours and has created what is known in the fishing community as “Lancet Jail.”

You should **not** have snagging on when catching Mora Tecta or Lancetfish.

📝Fisher’s Intuition Notes:
You need to catch two (2) Mora Tecta to trigger the 12 minute intuition for Lancetfish. There are a few methods here for getting Fisher’s Intuition. First method is to attempt to catch two Mora Tecta in the same 22-00 window. This is 100% doable, but not very common or reliable. It’s great though if you don’t want to have to afk in The Tempest for hours. The second method is catching a Mora Tecta in an earlier window that doesn’t lead into a Lancetfish window, and then afking in The Tempest until a Mora Tecta window before a Lancetfish window appears to catch the second Mora. With the elusiveness of Mora Tecta, it is likely you could be afking in the Tempest for many hours. 😢Catching Mora Tecta
Mora Tecta is a straight catch and !!! bite. Arrive to a Mora Tecta window early and catch either a Stormfish or Caliban. Surface Slap whichever one you catch and then use Chum. Then wait until the 22:00 window for Mora Tecta opens. This will allow you to have full GP and chum primed for the start of the window. Once the window opens, cast out and ignore all non !!! bites. If using Patience, Mora Tecta requires Powerful Hookset to catch. Mora Tecta seems to be getting away often, and has a higher-than-expected chance to break your line, losing the catch. Again, you need two (2) Mora Tecta to trigger the Fisher’s Intuition buff for Lancetfish.

🦈Catching Lancetfish
Lancetfish is another straight catch and !!! bite, but from 00:00 to 02:00. Lancetfish windows are always after a Mora Tecta window. After triggering intuition, switch to Squid Strip, cast out and Surface Slap a fish. If you have time, a Stormfish or Caliban bite is ideal, but if you don’t have time, anything will work. After slapping a fish, use chum and wait until 00:00 to cast out. Once 00:00 has past and you have cast out, continue to chum as much as you possibly can, using Cordials (Hi-cordial, ideally) to replenish your GP. Again, Lancetfish is the only !!! bite in the hole. You should *not* have snagging enabled. If using Patience, Lancetfish requires Powerful Hookset to catch. Lancetfish is elusive and slippery. It is not uncommon to have a full 00:00 to 02:00 window with no bites from Lancetfish, but it’s also entirely possible to have 2 or 3 bites but none hook.

Do your best and don’t stress. This is a fish that could take some time to catch. Best of luck!
