FFXIV Fan Fest Info & Saami Outfit Controversy | SoH | 338

Another week another controversy. This time, the Far Northern Attire has caught the attention of the Saami Council, and they want SE to remove the outfit immediately. Let’s keep it civil in the comments, we will be moderating the comment section. We also discuss the Fan Fest tickets going on sale for NA, and read an incredible interview with Koji-Fox (to be continued next week!).

  1. I'm glad these people are standing up for themselves, I'm glad they're saying something about it and drawing attention to it, and it's a damn shame so many people are angrily throwing a fit about it.

  2. It's a game about the evils of imperialism and oppression of tribal communities, it's only fair they live up to that in real life too…
That said, I don't believe the Saami were even able to reach out to the people behind 14, but Big Square Enix instead, so I don't think they'll get anything done without the legal process…

  3. should the ramie poncho be removed because it doesnt look exactly like a southamerican poncho?
should we remove the new world attire because they very purposely avoided it being representative to any real native north american garb?
hell, let's remove the current crafted set, why? well the Rinascita set is very clearly based on post renaissance south italian clothes. but not an accurate representation. so let's remove that too.
let's remove the entire samurai class because it's not an accurate representation of what samurai actually were, THAT is "cultural erosion".
hey im spaniard, let me sue square enix because many of the dance moves from Dancer is based off of spanish folk dances.

the entire topic is senseless and toxic. there is no legal weight behind it. and there is no answer SE or anyone else could give that would not end in a shitstorm. cultural intellectual property is also based on specific items with cultural weight, a folk dress does NOT have cultural IP status, by UN law at least.

53:00 so it's a matter of size then? if the sami people grow to let's say a mil people then their complaint should be brushed off? all cultures have been attacked at one point or the other, one culture is not more "important" jsut because it has less people in it

  4. I don't follow the news, so it's new to me, but people are defending SE? After listening to the segment I can't see a single angle in which SE doesn't look like the villain here. Talk to the Council and make it right Squeenix. i'm dissapointed.

  5. "…damaging to… corrosion of… our culture"
SE has given them the best free marketing they could've hoped for. They might've remained obscure, but now they will be remembered as overly sensitive…

  6. I am really sad to hear about the outfit. I really liked it, but boy… I will not be using it for now, and only then if they amend this somehow. Just really sad to hear it honestly, but I definitely learned something important today that I was ignorant to before!

  7. Maya culture (or more accurately Maya cultures, since they all have different languages and traditions) is still very much alive, but for some reason people think Maya equals only the classic period of precolumbian Maya civilisation. Likewise, the Aztec Empire may be no more, but the Nahuas still exist, with their own culture, traditions and language. Same with modern inheritors of the Quechua-speaking peoples of the Inca Empire, though I'm far less familiar with South American culture than I am with precolumbian Mesoamerica.

Their cultures didn't die just because they were conquered by Europeans.

  8. If that's the case than nobody can eat 99% of different foods or wear modern clothing. I feel like my culture is being attacked every day I think I need to form a council.
