If you want to make money from crystals or clusters, then gather them yourself. The time to buy them cheaply was 3 months ago. They've doubled in price since then as everyone has had the idea to stock up early.
They'll probably still go up in price when Dawntrail hits, but if they don't, or you can't sell yours while the price is high, you could end up losing gil.
Whereas, if you gather them yourself, all they've cost you is time, and whatever they sell for in Dawntrail, it will probably be enough to justify the time you're spending right now.
For materia, now is also too late to make much money on speculation. If you can trade in beast tribe currencies, island sanctuary cowries, etc, then you should target grade 9 materia, especially crafting and gathering.
