The story of Yoshi P’s assurance that the official DPS meter will not be implemented.
I don’t have much experience with other games, but FFXIV has friendly people 😀

I’m translating the ffxiv clipping into English.
English translations are not perfect, so please do not believe everything!

  1. Only thing this causes is that instead of flaming people openly, players are passive aggressive towards each other.
As long as they don't ban me for looking at my own numbers I don't care but I find this choice strange, especially considering how strong moderation in this game is!

  2. He's right. Even now, when using dps meters are against ToS, there are people in PF saying it is required if you wanna join. It existing creates a segregated community and adding it into the game will make it worse. None of the fights are tuned around dps. Mechanics are always priority before damage.

  3. He's just scared that seeing your dps will turn everyone into who they really are, fat hairy trolls with chips and fast food trash next to the keyboard. I'm sure a lot of people think that DPS meters turns the community toxic, it's the people that do. This is like saying let's take away all the guns so the shooting stops, but then the rate of stabbings will drastically increase. Toxicity is only exposed by the tools, not created. Honestly I see no problem asking someone to leave because they aren't pulling their weight if they can clear content because someone can be efficient enough. Those people are just wasting everyone else's time trying to clear content they really can't but being either too pussy to admit it or too stupid to realize it.

  4. Naoki Yoshida has been playing MMOs since Ultima Online. He's seen it all, he knows these communities inside and out– from the perspective of a player and a fan first and foremost. One of the reasons he's been so successful with FFXIV is that knowledge and experience.

For every player out there that would legitimately use a DPS to monitor and track their personal growth, there's another player out there that would use a DPS meter as a cudgel to bully and shame other players (many of these people think they are 'helping' other players and the community by doing so, too…).

The good news for you, if you're in the former camp, is that Yoshi-P has been pretty explicit about the fact that SE has no way of knowing if you're actually using a third-party tool like a DPS meter, and has no plans to implement a feature or software that spies on users to figure it out.

So, if you want a DPS meter, and you install it for personal use and performance monitoring, and you don't talk about in-game (or stream yourself using it….) you will never get in any trouble for doing so!!
